The club is getting with the times (popularity of american/european sports) and trying to attract and keep younger supporters and grow membership numbers. The dinosaurs (minority) I doubt will be missed.

The club is getting with the times and trying to attract and keep young supporters??? Nah, the club is doing what the players have asked, playing goal celebration songs. I can’t imagine anyone, let alone the club, expecting this gesture to boost membership numbers.

Your last sentence is not only disrespectful, it’s a sweeping generalisation. You think only young people enjoy music and old people don’t? Regardless of one’s age, not liking a song played after a goal doesn’t mean not liking music altogether. We have teenagers in the DA who don’t want the goal celebration songs; by your definition they’re dinosaurs. Nonsensical in the least.

Thanks for the report, Ghostie.

I'm having trouble finding training times. Not that they will line up with when I'm in Melbs but hey.

For the remainder of this week it’s training at Casey tomorrow and Friday, the boys have a day off on Thursday. Then there’s a captain’s run on Saturday morning at 11am at Gosch’s.

Beyond this week… who knows? If reports are correct training will be at Waverley before the end of the month.

As both a teacher and father of two young boys, I’m constantly amazed at how often people underestimate and infantilise children.

Kids these days, exactly the same as when we were their age, don’t fall in love with the game because of gimmicks like music between goals or watching to see if some punter can outrun a virtual player at half time.

They fall in love with the marks, the goals, the roar of the crowd, the taste of a pie and chips. Getting to spend the day with Dad or Mum or both.

This constant Americanisation of our great game is nonsense.

There is nothing better than the roar of the crowd after a goal, and the hum for the minute or so afterwards as the state of play is discussed. Nobody needs this interrupted by ear splitting music. Nobody needs all of their senses assaulted any time there’s a break in play. Let the game breathe. Let people take the opportunity to be able to actually converse with their family and/or friends next to them without needing to constantly shout to be heard.

I promise you when kids discuss the game when they get home, or when they get to school the next day, the choice of post goal music is a hell of a long way down the list of their topics. Don’t talk on their behalf and presume they’re idiotic goldfish - they’re a lot smarter than that.

Speak for yourself....you might be the father of two young boys. You're not the father of all the young boys and girls.

My kids love the music after goals and love the half time dash. They're pretty ambivalent on the footy itself as they find it confusing and hard to follow. Now mine are quite little ....too little to appreciate the game for all its beauty and certainly too little to follow the ever changing and poorly applied rules.

The gimmicks, as you seem to think they are, are there to cater to different people of different interests of different ages. The people who won't show up rain hail or shine....until one day it clicks. Until then, the music, games, gimmicks keep them interested enough to keep attending.

Do not make generalisations on things you actually have quite a narrow view on.

You tell Dee Boys to speak for himself since he’s the father of two young boys and not the father of all young boys and girls, then in the same breath you go on to describe how your own children feel about the gimmicks. Either you’re the father of all young boys and girls, or you’re the pot calling the kettle black.

Paddy’s #41 kit mustn’t be ready yet hence the no-number training top. It was great to see him there today, he’s so grateful.

#41 immediately thought of Peter Rhode who according to Demowiki played the most games proudly wearing the #41 guernsey for the Demons. 117 games total. Described as a 'rugged' defender, I admired his courage and competitive physicality. My most vivid memory of him playing was when he combined with Rod Grinter as twin medium forwards. When the team was bereft of forward options due to injuries. It was an unlikely but bonafide success. May have kicked seven goals between them? which contributed strongly to a terrific win at the 'G.

Other players who graced #41 include Frank Adams in his *freshman-sophomore years. Blair Campbell who was credited with introducing the banana kick and more recently Judd McVee. If Paddy Cross can emulate Blair Campbell's performance as a small forward with the Demons. At two goals per game he will fit in very well. An exciting prospect I wish him well.

Pup Brown was #41 as well, relatively briefly though.

Lucky you.

It's odd how with the passage of time there are groups that you wished you'd seen, even if you weren't particularly into them at the time. Floyd are one. My interest/respect for them has grown through more exposure to David Gilmour.

I was actually a big fan of Syd Barrett.

As a songwriter perhaps, but I'd always underrated Gilmour as a guitarist - my loss. He's a beautifully soulful player.

Although I suspect tongue in cheek, if you are actually leaving a Dees game because they are playing music after a goal, then you probably should be at home on the couch because its not for you. The club is getting with the times (popularity of american/european sports) and trying to attract and keep younger supporters and grow membership numbers. The dinosaurs (minority) I doubt will be missed.

In context I've been going to the footy for 35 years, and it's not a big deal. I'd like to hear 25 songs a game if it means we've kicked 25 snags.

If you need music to keep it exciting, what does that say about the modern day game. At least the od days, you'd get a half time brawl as entertainment.

Yes Barrett was probably a better songwriter than musician, but I loved the way he sung with a real innocence/naivety to his voice… a shame he dropped a little too much acid.

Gilmour is a great player, although my favourite British guitarists are Peter Green, Albert Lee and Robert Fripp.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
