He’s 32, yep. But by the end of those years left on his contract, by my math (which is horrible, don’t trust it) he would be 34/35.

I don’t see how it’s as bad as you say.

I think he should be on one year deals for sure but really we can use him whilst his body is semi ok (not current form) and once he’s significantly hampered put him forward like the Cats are doing with Danger.

Alternatively, he gets moved on and they clear his contract/salary.

Him and Todd sure played it well to get him maximum time/money.

Funny you should mention him - you may be right that 2028 is a stretch, but watching the game live in Adelaide on Saturday I said to my friend in the third quarter - this is the time when you need Jack Viney! To win a hard contest/ground ball - we just weren't "bending over" the ball.

Maybe. But in 2024, the year he was re-signed, he won our Best and Fairest, we'd just lost Brayshaw and we were about to lose Neal-Bullen. Also, if some of what's recently come out is true, Goodwin (and others?) wanted to move on Oliver and Petracca as well.

We were desperate for leadership on fiield and off, not to mention what he brought to the on-ball brigade. A 3 year extension on top of the one he had is perhaps a year too many, but if that's what it cost to keep him, fine. It's also a recognition of what he's given to the club, and keeps him around the place across our transition. James McDonald says hi.

Yep don’t disagree. Needed to happen. It’s a shame he’s copped this injury otherwise it probably wouldn’t have been raised. I love Vines. Just wish he used the ball better going inside 50 but other than that, nothing to complain about.

Good on him for playing the system to his advantage as well, after all it’s his job and income. I’d do the same in his situation for my family.

Fantastic for Langford to learn off too, won’t be shirting contests if he learns from Vines/Steelo!

On reflection, most players taken in the mid season draft, outside the system, don't have the AFL level fitness to play this year, so it would most likely be a player you just want to secure ahead of the draft.

That is fine if we have someone in mind.

If we don't, I can see the club just making delistings at season end and trading and drafting a few more than usual.

I really don't see any downside with this, and it should have happened with McAdam before the season started.

Even if we don't replace these guys mid-season, we're really no worse off.

Good: Patrick Cross (who played for Casey last week) is available while CJ and Bowser are down as “tests” which means they should be back at least by next week, if not at the weekend.

Bad: Shane McAdam has gone from 2-3 weeks to TBC where he joins Tom Campbell and Jack Viney.

No preseason and hasn’t played since 2024.

Poor bloke - it’s hard to see him getting back to AFL standard in the circumstances. Hate to say it but there needs to be some sort of retirement discussion to allow the club to draft a young player for future development.

Absolutely. I think we need to target a key defender in the mid season draft. Think it’s a great draft for talls to slip through, we’ve had success with grabbing Turner and it’s looking like Kentfield may be a bonus too.
