Mick Stinear Steps Down

Agree, feel he definitely had something to offer menโ€™s team in any number of roles!

A good reader of the game and match day coach and as good as Paul Roos with building team culture.

I'm more gutted with this than seeing Oliver and Tracc go.

I think itโ€™s a positive

Obviously heโ€™s done a great job but no ones perfect. If the club can keep its list together and a new Coach can find improvements in game plan we should be better off.

I was surprised watching the highlights on the Vote Count just how many good players we had lost to other clubs

Cordner staring at Carlton struggled to get a game with us after a couple of seasons

Great coach

I think Shae Sloane is lined up as replacement

i'm sure Daisy will be back at some stage but i don't think she'll replace Mick. she'll want to finish what she has started in Perth i reckon.

If they have Shae Sloane lined up to take over make the announcement immediately. Don't leave it hanging and allow any potential uncertainty to lead players to consider a move elsewhere.

No offence to Shae, im sure she's great but I think the role has gone past a code hopper who played for 5 mins. She wouldn't get the job at a div 4 ammo side.

Ben Brown?

Rhi Watt?

Do we add a new thread for Eden Zanker's possible move to WA, or does this become a combined AFLW 'changing of the guard' thread?

Oh boy. Stinear and now Zanker. This is not good.

And she's out of contract, isn't she?

Eden, Chloe, come on down to the Rolling Hills of Gippsland: Casey out the back door and Heaven out the front!

As good as gone sadly. Loved watching Edo too. Would be a big loss.

According to sources has received a great offer from a rival!

Yes, he won't have to travel all week.

Surf Coast to Casey must be heaps of fun.

I would have been happy to have Mick for another ten years. I've never seen a coach get the players so invested as he does (including the men's comp). I certainly understand his need to move on and desire to end the Anglesea-Casey run. I wouldn't have lasted one year doing that. I wouldn't be surprised if the club had offered him a role with the men's team and I know he's worked with them in the women's off-season in the past. Best of luck to him! He will be sadly missed.

Interesting to read on the AFL site that Zanker looks likely to go to Fremantle and whatever we get may make it easier for us to become the club that takes Gold Coast's Pick 1, which they need to get rid of because they have at least one gun academy player and several others they're keen on.

Let him go. Let him go...

The most important role in Mick Stinear's life is to be a loving husband and, with his wife, raise their two very young boys to be loving, moral, productive members of society. In my mind, here's little doubt the opportunity to coach in Geelong delivering a more fulfilling husband and father role was a major factor in Mick's decision. That the Geelong club can help Mick continue to grow personally and professionally is a big cherry on top.

We've been blessed to have Mick as our inaugural women's coach and that he set a beautiful 10-year foundation. He's left the MFC in a better place. That he did this while living on the Surf Coast is quite extraordinary. He never once complained about the travel to Casey, paying great respect to the people of Casey. Daisy Pearce has stated Mick has always been generous with his time.

For Mick's replacement, the Club's governance procedures will and must kick in. This is not a time for raw footy emotion. Even if Shae Sloane is a standout candidate, proper governance must be followed. The members deserve such and, especially, our incredible women's team deserve that.

Regarding the risk of losing players, have faith in our leaders. Not just Steven Smith and Guerra, but more importantly Kate Hore, Liza McNamara, Hanksy, Paxy and others.

Daisy and Mick have left our W team in an exceptionally good place and both left with tears. That says a lot.

Godspeed good Mick.

His results and team buy-in shows he's a great coach. Sad to go but 10 years is a long time.

His success in the Dee's being a successful team in terms of win/loss (Should have more finals except for the AFL stuffing around the comp and how it works). His main rivals Adelaide and Brisbane were essentially state or origin teams as the players nominated should elect to go to only a team in their state.

He has built a good time over time and refreshed it with new talent. Baring injury (we seem to get a lot to the best players) we have always been very competitive and look above the standard of most other teams in the comp.

Whoever is taking over has a lot to live up to. Would like Daisy back as how quickly has she changed the west coast culture for the better.

...but who is coaching us?

I hope we haven't dropped the ball here.

Good luck to him, and not a surprise.

But I'm uncomfortable with the speed of it.

Curiously no media interest in it either?

Spot on DIAK - well said. Mick has being doing the grind from the Surf Coast for 10 years - he deserves a gig closer to home and family. Owes us nothing...our program owes him a great deal.

Good luck to Mick. I hope he does well at Geelong, but not too well.

Hopefully he stays well away from our players as well.

Yep for sure, i wish him all the best. Unfortunately I can't see why he would stay away from our players.

Is there any news whatsoever of what we're doing about recruiting a replacement?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
