If Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves is still on the table at our pick you would have to take him I’d think, was one of the top prospects coming into this year after a great underage season just wasn’t able to get the consistency this season but the talent is hard to ignore once you get to this part of the draft.

The Herald Sun's late mail for tonight:-

MELBOURNE

First night selections: Xavier Taylor (Pick 11), Latrelle Pickett (Pick 12)

Remaining picks: 30, 56, 58

Melbourne provided the most heartwarming story on Wednesday night when Latrelle Pickett received his Demons guernsey from his cousin Kysaiah. Demons recruiting manager Jason Taylor was just as pleased to secure gamebreaking defender Xavier Taylor, but he said he doesn't view him as a midfielder. It means the Dees may look to bolster their engine room after losing Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver during the trade period.

Melbourne is among the clubs in the 30s who could put bidding pressure on St Kilda for NGA prospect Kye Fincher, who shone in a midfield role for Sandringham VFL. Mercurial forward Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves and ruck Marcus Krasnadamskis would also be in their thinking, while Tairon Ah-Mu is a key forward consideration later in the piece. Melbourne committed mid-year to taking 201cm developing tall Kalani White, son of Melbourne great Jeff, as a father-son prospect, and he appears unlikely to receive a national draft bid. In that scenario, the Demons could either add him as a rookie or take with their last national draft pick.

The Demons have filled their Category B rookie allotments after selecting college basketballer Oscar Berry, but NGA graduate Toby Sinnema is expected to be a train-on player with the Dees if he isn't picked as a rookie.

Whoever we pick will be someone who can play a couple of positions. King has stated he will not pick anyone who can only play one position…

Of course

Those polo neck sponsors have to get their TV time

Im surprised some on here are complaining when he was a rated a 1st round pick anyway. I watched him a few times for Glenelg and he basically has the same attributes as his cousin without the physicality. Trust JT with this one.

Surely we take two players tonight?

Good call. Really hope Sam Allen gets to the Dees. He’s a Dees fanatic. That’s a boyhood dream and he’s a talented youngster who had a season ending injury so didn’t see his full talent. Saw enough in two APS games and one Chargers to see he has the ability.

Nothing surer than JT selecting some bloke from obscurity, without a media profile photo.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?
