I hope the focus this preseason is on explosive pace and high speed endurance and not bulking up.

I watched 10 minutes of the 2021 grand final yesterday and for reference, 10 minutes of the last round 2025 and couldn’t believe how top heavy we look now. Trac in particular looks more like the bulky size when he was drafted.

Key is getting to contests and getting out into space, more than busting through packs these days.

Dont entirely disagree, but I also think if you look at the top teams they were all well muscled as well as having pace. Only a few need explosive pace but endurance is now even more significant. A few bulls to break packs are important also and i think thats the skill of the coach in rotating players off the bench to initiate or respond to the tempo of the game

That's a very Melbourne thing to do, isn't it? Employ someone to write your posts for you.

3 months off seems like a lot

Would have been good to get a good 6 week block of training in before christmas. The season starts earlier every year so only 2 months and a bit post xmas to get a preseason in

Not our call though, these dates will all be locked in under the CBA.

Last year they also started back on the 11th of November. In 2023 they started back on the 27th of November, in 2022 it was the 28th of November. It seems making finals determines the recommencement date 🤷‍♀️

True, but I reckon 3 months is too long away from the club. Must be hard for the players to maintain fitness without coaches and being at the club

The PA should concentrate on fixing issues like clubs delisting players and rehiring them on the rookie list. My company can't sack permanent employees and rehire them as contractors (sorta similar example)

Each player is given targets and a program to follow over their off-time. They will train, but not in club gear or in ‘organised’ events. The aim is to come back in shape to help make the formal pre-season a success. Most footballers have a short break, or surgery and recovery, then get right back into it. You will hear commentators say they ‘came back in ripping shape’, for example….

Or either get rid of the Rookie List altogether, or return it to its original intent and only allow on it players who have never been on a list before and/or aged under, say, 21 years old.

Do we know who is having surgery over the break?

Gawn spoke to this in a recent interview. I'm paraphrasing (probably badly ...) but said that October now is what December used to be, and that this is the period when you do all the hard running. Club training, when it starts up again, has become more footy focused.

Maybe review whether Trac stays on your favourite list, maybe replace with Langford??

Why? Tracc and Claz may well still be a couple of M_9’s favourite players.

PS M_9 I got rid of my Trac bobble man humanely, although I was tempted to twist his head off and flush it down the john.

I only like MFC players

Fair enough. But other people may like former MFC players. I’m sure there are some MFC fans who still list Jesse Hogan or Jack Watts for example among their favourites

Firstly, let me say how much I appreciate the fearless reporters that post to all of the training threads during the pre-season. Resident where I am in N-W Europe it is really a critical off-season lifeline so that I can get a real feel for what the team is up to. A really big personal thank-you to all of you.

Now, without putting too much pressure on all of you, the next 5 months leading into the ’26 season will be the most critical pre-season reporting period that we have had for many a year. So, no shirkers!

A big turnover of senior players, new senior players coming to the club, a new coach and new assistant coaches, a couple of first round picks to run the eye over…… a new style of play… a different approach to training? So much we will all need feedback on

Again, a big thanks to all the track watchers. I am looking forward to whatever reports land and I am very optimistic about next season the following ones.

Go Dees in ’26!

Ditto from this MFC reserved seating member in Bangkok but if there's any interest I'm happy to post on the Bangkok Tigers who train just down the road from me

Max explained to the MMM crew the other day that they are in full running training at the moment and that the bulk of the running will be completed when they get back for preseason so that the footies come out on Day 1. Surprised me a bit, he also mentioned that he does the majority of his running on bitumen or concrete rather than grass and has done for a number of years now.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
