What do you think about Swadling?

There’s a technique to It that’s for sure.

You want the baby wrapped up nice and tight but also stay on their back.

Admittedly, I've only seen one video of him, but if we kept this pick I liked the look of midfielder Fred Rodriguez.

I wonder what @Pennant St Dee thinks of him.

I really like him too G.

One of those ones that I can see being a big steal in the draft similar to a Like Parker or Chad Warner with those later picks.

I'd easily have him high on our list, especially if we go a small forward and a outside midfielder option with our first two picks.

Don't want to unnecessarily derail this thread on Pick 37, but I've included his scouting notes below. Draft Power Rankings currently have him just inside the top 50, at Number 47.

47 - Fred Rodriguez

Fred Rodriguez

Midfielder

A natural-born leader who is lethal on both sides of his body, Rodriguez took out MVP honours for Western Australia

Club South Fremantle / Fremantle City Dockers

State WA

Height 184cm

DOB 10/07/07

Ball Winning / Kicking / Leadership / Pressure

Rodriguez followed up an impressive bottom-age campaign with another consistent season playing for a range of teams. The combative midfielder was named the WA captain ahead of the under-18 national championships and led from the front, acting as a catalyst for their only win over Vic Country by booting two goals from 17 touches. While he played mostly onball during the tournament, he was named on a half-forward flank in the under-18 All-Australian side. Rodriguez possesses an impressive left and right foot, reminiscent of fellow WA-born Lawson Humphries, and he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty defensively by laying strong tackles. He has a great blend of inside grunt and outside run as a midfielder - a trait few possess – along with exceptional workrate. Rodriguez mixed his time between playing for South Fremantle’s Colts, reserves and senior sides in the WAFL this year. He was named his side’s best player in a losing Grand Final against Claremont in the WAFL Colts in September, logging 25 disposals, nine clearances and one goal. Rodriguez put his aerobic capacity on display at the national draft combine in October, finishing seventh in the 2km time trial with a time of 6 min 20 sec.

2025 WAFL Colts 150 ranking points, 25.3 disposals, 2.9 marks, 7 clearances, 7.9 groundball gets, 6.1 inside-50s, 6.6 score involvements, 1.5 score assists, 1.0 goals, 5.5 tackles (8 games)

2025 WAFL 54 ranking points, 6 disposals, 3 marks, 1 clearance, 2 inside-50s, 4 score involvements, 1 goal, 1 score assists, 1 tackle (1 game) 2025 WAFL Reserves 84 ranking points, 12 disposals, 6 clearances, 7 groundball gets, 3 score involvements, 1 score assist (1 game)

2025 National Champs 108 ranking points, 18 disposals, 3.3 marks, 4.3 clearances, 4 inside-50s, 4 score involvements, 1.5 score assists, 0.5 goals, 4.5 tackles (4 games)

if we need a midfielder pick at pick “37”, then I’d go with local lads such as Rory Wright or Riley Onley. Either would be very good picks imv.

From SA, I really think Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier will be a player. Showed plenty in the under 18 carnival and at SANFL

From WA, agree Fred Rodriguez has been impressive as has Sam Swadling and Blake Kelly. Kelly is especially classy and can play inside and outside. Watched some highlights later in the season and he just showcased his skills.

He must have some knocks on him, which I'm sure PSD will be across.

i was going to throw up matt leray as a prospect but i do think he presents as a blake howes type, good size, good foot skills but isn't a good competitive aerial threat like lever and probably gets thrown around a lot positionlly at the next level

Of course, he'll have knocks on him. All of the mooted top 10 picks do too.

So did Simon Black (pick 31), Dan Hannebery (30) and Rory Sloane (44), as well as countless others.

Unlike (some) others, I'd take the best player for our third pick and not decide to go for ''local''.

Kicking needs work, has a good tank and really pushes himself with gut run, there’s no serious x-factor with Fred, but he could also end up being a player who plays 150-200 games because he does the small things welll. He was absolutely flying early in the year but tailed off towards the end of the season, unsure whether he was carrying something

I just like his name. Is there a Fred on any AFL playing list at the moment? If not, who was the last Fred to play VFL/AFL? I can remember Fred Swift for Richmond, but has there been a Fred in the 50-60 years since he retired?

Swadling is an accumulator and great athlete. Question marks on 2 way run, winning the contested footy and dealing with close attention

Cal was suggesting that the club with pick 38( Richmond I think) would probably end up with a player they rate around 20 in the draft due to clubs ranking players very differently and I assume later picks coming in a bit.

37 could be nice spot for JT to find a gem.

i just watched his highlights and i actually think contested footy and close attention were his strengths, he was clean one touch and always able to get his hands free to dish the ball out when under pressure and importantly was hitting chests with his handballs they were accurate and intended. wasnt able to see enough about his running but he showed enough burst, would probably start at HF rather than HB but looked neat enough. Don't know if its a lazy comparison but Rivers did come to mind

Looked through some other profiles too, Sam Allen the small mid who has an acl atm, he looks a likely type i can see why people havent forgotten him

Mikunda might be around there, BOB all probably start as HF types and could finish there too but are on the smaller side

Great question! I reckon Fred Cook would be the last, and he finished up at VFL level in 1969.

Good(?) ol' GOOGLAI: Fred Campbell, Swans 1999, Saints 2000.

I know nothing about potential draftees. Kudos to all those on this board who do, and who follow the pools so closely. 👏🙏

‘Lethal on both sides of the body’

Between some random draft guru and 'Pennant', I'm trusting 'Pennant' every day of the week.

Fred Fanning of course!!!

Fanning played his last game for us in 1947, so is a fair way off being the most recent Fred.

It was a decent game, though. That was the day he kicked the still record 18 goals, with his final kick being a disgraceful behind.

Why do you wish to strip me of joy? Is it too much to expect that Fred becomes a 5 time premiership player for us with 100% kicking efficiency?

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
