There's something about left footers isn't there!

This guy is a classy ball user, no question about it. Not too fussed about his contested game, kicking like that opens up the ground and that's gold.

Can he kick on his right? Most left footers couldn’t locate their right foot when the heat is on.

Lindsay seems to be able to hit any angled kick, I don't think it'll matter.

Haven't seen him use his right but my word that left is something.

He's also a great 'quick kicker'. Finds the pass that few see very quickly.

although some have said that he is not a contested player (true), i stand by the statement that he is hard at it (stands up in collisions and puts his body on the line).

@layzie agree. Dees supporters are crying out for players who can use the ball smartly and with precision.

Shifters write up on the AFL website (below). If he is available at our pick, I’d happily call out his name. Dees fans need a player with a lethal boot who can hit targets. He makes good decisions. He’s a young leader. It’s a yes from me.

Josh Lindsay
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: Geelong Falcons
Community Club: Newtown & Chilwell
Date of Birth: 07/04/2007
Height: 183cm

A left-footed defender with a lethal boot, Lindsay has been a strong performer across recent years. Won the medal as Team Heppell’s best player in the Marsh AFL National Futures match last year and then added the medal as the Australia U18 team’s best player in its win over VFL side Coburg this year. He continued his excellent form into the National Championships with Victoria Country, using his speed and crisp decision making to set up the play from the back half. Courageous in the air and a standout leader, he averaged 21.8 disposals at 76 percent efficiency and was among his team’s best players against both Western Australia and South Australia. Capped his year by winning All Australian honours and being named in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year.

Plays like Salem to my naked eye.

Not a bad comparison. However I think Lindsay is a much better kick than Salem ever was/is (in my view)

Yep, IMV, Lindsay is a much more incisive and attacking kick than Salo is, who is more about maintaining possession. Lindsay sets up offensive chains.

But the question marks over his contested ability is too much of a glaring weakness in his game for mine.

He is in the top 3 of this draft. If we pick him up at 7-8 it will be a steal. No other player in the draft comes close to having his ability by foot which is now how the game is played. Is exactly what we need off half back and through the middle. Him and dovatson are the duo we should pick

He plays a role as a distributed off half back. He isn’t meant to be a contested bull

I wonder what his contested to uncontested possession ratio is compared to a Whitfield or Zorko?

Neither of them are particularly contested players but are still key to how their teams move the ball

Lindsay could still be an elite half back if he can at least win enough of his own ball, but if he’s relying on others for the majority of his possessions then that lack of contest could be a worry

One thing I noticed was quite often he had chosen his target and released the ball very quickly.
Not sure if this kid will be a star of the comp, but it looks like he can be a very good player off half back offensively, but can he actually defend? Tackle? Harass?

Too many half backs who are good kicks have no idea how to actually defend.

I didn't say he needed to be a contested bull, but he needs to be able to win contests. You can't just receive at AFL level. You won't make it. And for a top 10 pick, that's too much of a gamble IMO.

He has reasonably speed and acceleration as well - not lighting quick, but would be in the top 4-5 in our club. Good kick - can see the comparisons to Salo, but i like how he takes the game on with some of his kicks.

Wouldnt be the worst choice.

Like Salem does now, as a banged up older player who's lost his speed and is hanging on with his smarts and kicking. Lindsay is like that as an 18 year old but without Salem's toughness or ability to win contested footy.

For comparison, these are Salem's 2013 draft highlights. They're different players at the same age.

Yeah I don’t see the comp with Salem at all. At least not when Salo was top of his game.

I think there are other prospects who would help us more than Lindsay at 7&8.

Has more similarities to Bowey than Salem imo.

Bowey is much quicker and more agile, able to twist and turn out of danger and deliver quickly.

I can’t think of a good recent AFL comparison for Lindsay, which in itself is an issue. Maybe Kane Farrell? Trent McKenzie?

Lindsay appears to be an outside defender with ordinary athleticism and an outstanding boot. It’s not a combination that you see often at AFL level, with a lot of the defensive distributors in the AFL being quick or being midfielders/forwards that get moved into defensive positions to maximise their strengths.

But maybe there’s something this keyboard warrior is missing, as I’m no expert and am just going of the same videos everyone else watches.

Farrell was the one I thought of. Lindsay is a bit more well rounded for the same age I think. Somewhere between a Farrell and a Mitch Duncan.

I do think as he matures and gets more powerful he should add more range and penetration to his boot too. But I like he how weights his kicks, he has nice distance control.

Zero comparisons to Bowey

I watched 5 minutes of highlights and I shouldn't because I'm a hopeless judge of junior talent, but I didn’t see him run with ball at all and that concerns me for the role he plays.

Yes nice, quick distribution over varying distances which is very good and "first option" is a great mindset. But I also want to see some line breaking 80-90m run and kick plays mixed in there too for the role.
