Farewell Clayton Oliver

Clarry was going to Geelong , wasn't he. Possibly that would have been given the nod by our present Coach, seeing as he was there then.

By the way does anyone know if he got any free kicks?

Cheezus H Carrryst like oppos do with soft as Daicos, cheèze it aint rocket science

Daicos is super-elusive much like Robbie Flower (RIP), Gary Wilson & Kevin Bartlett were

None of the 4 were (or are) physical players nor did they need to be

Oliver has lost his ability to be super-elusive and that's why he rushes his kicks so often these days

I do remember that game well. We all thought 2025 was his redemption year on the back of an amazing pre season game.

Re Friday - I might add that aside from each centre bounce, Collingwood left him completely unaccountable and enabled him free access to the footy.

And the Pies were missing their ruckman and both Daicos boys. Not sure who else was out but it was far from a full strength Collingwood side.

Individual before team? Makes no sense

Oliver will still accumulate possessions but he doesn't like any sort of contact these days. And because his reflexes aren't at the level as they once were, he offloads the ball indiscriminately

He's having 2nd looks and hears footsteps. It's why he got benched early in the season by Goodwin. No room for faint hearts

A good player offloads as late as possible and then takes the hit

Both Oliver & Petracca do not like the late hit. They both play frightened

I'm glad they're both gone

Macca, Show me in Oliver highlights where he shirks body contact. Any evidence at all. I am sure you are making such a false statement with tongue in cheek.

He rushes his kicks these days so it looks to me like he's avoiding contact

And he plays for the opposition now so he now gets looked upon in terms of looking for weaknesses in his game

If he had put his head down and was a good contributor for the Demons, I'd be a full-on supporter of his

He's no longer a Demon, Bobby

Thanks Macca but please have another look at his highlights package and still say he wasn't a good contributor and didn't put his head down. 2 Coaches awards and 4 Blueys should disprove your statements. Cheers mate, we are both on the same side.

Ok, but he's now the enemy and the club is here to beat the enemy. No matter who it is

I feel the same for all the other ex Demons. They are in the way of our team winning

Of course I recognise his contributions but that's now in the history books

A celebration for another day

Make no mistake, when we play the Giants, Oliver will want nothing less than a win for his team ... and if that happens, we will be the losers

Who wants that?

You're living in the past.

He hasnt had a decent year since 2022. Go figure.

Its like Jack Steele, I see what value he can add to our team on and field field and not the individual awards even though its impressive paper.

Steele will add something to our team dynamic that Oliver couldn't and thats leadership and help mentoring the next wave of young players coming through.

Its why I hold guys like Bernie Vince and Daniel Cross in such high regard to this day more then Oliver.

The Steele trade came later but the club knew about it early on (in my view)

It's just that we needed to free up the cap space with the Oliver departure, first

But imagine if we had acquired Steele first? (for no real cost as it turned out)

The then departure of Oliver (for peanuts) would have been an easier pill to swallow

"You can go Ollie, we've already got your replacement"

My biggest curiosity this year with these two is to see if that anxiety they’ve played with the last couple of years continues or not.

Interestingly, the amount of total seconds trac would have ball in hand before disposing, was the quickest in the league the past two seasons. In total contrast, Nas held the ball for the longest amount of time.

Well, if both of them were reasonably sure that they were heading for greener pastures in 2026, then staying healthy is all important ... "Don't get injured"

Both previously had a fierce attack on the ball but we didn't see that. And the rushed kicks from both of them all season? That was an eye-opener

Mind you, Scully & LJ were much the same in their final year at the club

There are lots of things I don't agree with PF about but I am 100% with him on this. We should have worked hard harder to help him defeat his problems and kept on of the greatest players ever to play for our club.

Specifically, what does this mean?

Carlton CEO about Curnow. Interesting how other CEOs talk so bluntly about players moving on.

“He made it very, very clear that he didn’t want to be there. From my perspective, I want people to be at the Carlton Football Club with gratitude, and people that just genuinely want to be a part of the Carlton Football Club.”

For the record I love Oliver, I hoped he could stay, I wish him the best.

Considering Melbourne clearly didnt have any behaviour clauses in the initial contract, I presume it just remains the same with a few minor adjustments from the Giants.

Something tells me Giants may have underestimated the petulant child they're getting.

They got him for nothing it is a low deal.

Pretty poor highlights package if it shows him avoiding contact.

Low deals can also turn sour very quickly.

If he falls apart or loses it. They haven't lost much. As I said it's low risk for gws.

Happen to be in Sydney this week and just been invited to go see the Swans - GWS derby on tomorrow evening. With so many ex Dees players playing who wouldn’t. Hogan is my favourite, but I also have a soft spot for Clayton. @Ghostwriter , I’ll pass on your best wishes to Clarry (if he still remembers you) and I’ll add that I hope that he finds contentment at his new home.

Doesn't really matter if he finds his form again. The situation was untenable at the Dees.

Geez I like to think he’ll remember me… it hasn’t been that long 😅

Enjoy the game 🙂

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
