What has he actually done to be so important to a few on here. Has not set the world on fire at all.

Well what do you mean by important? I don't think anyone is projecting him to be the next great white hope, but plenty recognise his ability and potential. Let's not forget he isn't even close to hitting 100 games; he's 65 games into his career and is still 21 (22 in September).

Given Humphrey's age and lineal growth since being drafted, I think it's fair to say you would be recruiting largely on potential as it stands, but that's not to say he hasn't exhibited some pretty strong indications of what he'll be able to achieve. For mine, he's one of the few in the under 23 category who I would say is a genuine mid-forward and IMO, he could be very similar to Robbie Gray. His versatility (with reference to an attacking mid/forward ability) would really add something to our current list and outside of Koz (who is a fairly different type of player to Hump anyway), I don't think we actually have many other players who can regularly, credibly and with effect move into that rotation*.

If I'm using one attribute as a point of reference for his potential, and what it would mean for our side, it's his ability to translate a contested ball into a genuine forward 50 threat. Fundamentally, what really stands out when watching Humphrey is that he has an innate skill and effectiveness in winning a contested ball, maintaining possession and then controlling the tempo of the game, and then carry the ball into the forward 50. So he doesn't just have the ability to win a ball (i.e., in a similar vein to Viney), but he actually converts these possessions in contested / attacking scenarios into genuine scoring opportunities in the forward 50. So essentially, you're looking at a player who not only is capable of winning his own ball, but also has the vision, skill and decision-making to turn those possessions into shots on goal, or into a goal assist for teammates.

Outside of this, Humphrey has also demonstrated an ability to score himself when in the F50, so he's not only a threat on the spread and on the offensive play, but he's a threat in front of the goals.

I actually see Humphrey as being a bit of a replacement for Petracca, as he's probably our most recently player who fits into that mould of being a dynamic, powerful and unpredictable threat (once again, with reference to a MID/FWD ability).

*The closest player(s) we'd probably have that really do have a solid Mid/FWD game would be Koz, or Chandler (probably more FWD/MID). Chandler isn't a centre square/rest in forward line player like Humphrey though, his utility is in the linking play on the transition out of the D50 and into the F50.

TLDR: Humphrey has an ability to convert his contested acumen into damaging F50 possessions/scoring opportunities and has shown a genuine ability and trajectory to be a significant and damaging offensive AFL player.

We’re not doing our chances of signing BH any harm with our current form and game style. If you build it they will come.

Is Pick 13 and Pick 16 enough though? laugh

Pretty obvious that the Humphrey trade hasn't been 'on' for a while, considering we were linked with taking 7 and 8 for Trac early last week. Funny how a lot on here are quick to pot the media for anything but are happy to believe what a random anonymous poster says on a fan forum? It's literally the media and journalist's job to get this stuff right, their reputation is on the line.

Oh @Greg Schneider surely you are not that naive? If you think Bailey wasn't in our sights, you my friend are delusional. Even more to the fact that I believe they will go after him again this year. The dees have been nibbling around the edges for him since he was drafted. We even went as far as trying to draft up to get him. But time will tell.

Whether or not we get him is another question. Things change for players, families and circumstances. Personally he is playing for a team that is humming and most likely closer to a premiership than most other teams. Whether the family side is enough to push it again this year is the question no one has answers for atm.

We have cleared cap space this year, no doubt there is a target they are going for.

I'd be going chips in for Zac Bailey personally

Apart from the fact that Adelaide are already throwing stupid dollars at Zac Bailey ($10M over 7 years), I don't understand the hype around the guy.

Where is the evidence that he is capable of being a top line AFL midfielder once he steps out of the shadow of Neale, Dunkley and McCluggage?

I'd want a lot more than 20 disposals and a goal a game for that amount of money.

I'm not totally sold on Bailey Humphrey either, but clearly he is much younger and has much more scope for development.

Have to agree with that. I am not saying Humphrey is going to be a Bont type of player, but Humphrey wants more midfield time. Unfortunately not available in the current suns team.

Personally, I still think we need that big bulking forward, but our trading and draft gurus know better than us.

I would love us to go for Jed Walters. Young, very quick, big and strong. Can grow with our team!

Who was the one that was at the BBQ’s? That was brilliant. [censored] and giving updates on the loo.

I agree - That team has way too much talent in it and we should try and snaffle a few that are not playing in the positions they want. Walters is not (yet) a mainstay in their side!! And even has to ruck! Was surprised that one of the footy shows - classified or couch - were asking questions about where he's at. It was his first game for the year and he kicked a few and definitely showed a bit. Clearly has loads of talent.
Having said that, i think if King leaves then there will be a spot for him every week and so is unlikely to go anywhere.

In terms of targets, as nice as a King, Butters, Humphrey, Bailey etc would be, other than Jeremy Cameron, I can't think of too many big signings that have worked out in terms of getting a premiership. I think often it disrupts the salary cap and maybe the locker room as you have to pay overs to get someone to come to you. Obviously easier said than done, but I think better bringing in players that fit your needs (we did this pretty well last year) rather than the biggest names in the trade period Eg Pies before their flag got Hill, Frampton, Mitchell, McStay - the first 3 played a big role in their GF, Hawthorn bringing in Barrass and Battle, Brisbane bringing in Dunkley at end of 2022.

I think St Kilda, Brisbane and GC will all have a fair few to pick from that they don’t have the money to pay for anymore. Too many stars they have paid overs for.

Should be easy to scoop up a few.

As long as we don't fall down the ladder we will be getting Butters no need for anyone else.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
