A Key Defender should be at the top of our list.

Shouldn't we follow the formula of stocking up on mids and smalls in the draft and then trade in a couple of established key position players when we are ready to have a tilt? Like we did with Lever, May and Ben Brown before 2021?

We’re in need of a quality KPF, KPD, a couple more A-grade mids to go along with our kids, and maybe a quality ruck to help out Heath when Gawn retires.

But other than that we’re all good

Key forwards are not as important as they're made out to be. Geelong the only recent premier to win a flag in the past five years with a really good one.

Great key defenders are a necessity as are goal kicking mids.

You can only trade in what's available.

He's been used to patch holes the last couple of years and couldn't settle into a position.

Lets see how he settles this season and not mark him on a preseason hit out.

The players that are used to patch holes are the ones who you don't mind losing from their natural position. Right now I'd have Tmac in front of Petty.

Joe Daniher...

I wouldn't be writing off Petty, the kid can play. Play him in as May's replacement and don't shift him.

Was always a rung down from the best forwards in the comp. Anyway they won it fine without him the very next year.

What is Petty the guy for?

Hopefully the backline Young Angus, once he settles back into the fold, he isn’t really a swingman and he is our tallest defender, he Lever and Disco can work out who should be on who. We have TMac, Adam’s and possibly Berry as backup’s but we need some luck with injuries and concussions.

But for how long KozzyCan, TMac has been great but he like May is nearing his end. Harrison Petty is entering his peak years as a defender, he needs continuity and support.

To be fair Brisbane won it last year playing Logan Morris, Ty Gallop and a resting ruck (while Geelong had Cameron and Neale up the other end)

News flash : May is not nearing his end, he has retired.

I hope TMac thrives again this year, and adds to his Premiership medallions. 😁

If he can find that form great. But until then I’m of the view we need to recruit another key defender.

He was not a rung down and performed well in both GF's he played in as much as I'm not a fan.

Brisbane got one against a poor Geelong last year.

...but still went after and landed Oscar Allen.

They know they are a better team with a good KPF.

Gaaawd the over hype on this bloke is STAGGERING, we are more likely to get the Ghost of Humphrey Bogart in Dees colors than Bailey Humphrey. BUT dream on people if he gets to dèes next year I will be shocked!

Yes, key forwards are a nice to have but not the top priority. Brisbane really want for nothing though.

Amusing myself looking at stats while commuting, and twigged to an odd similarity.

Bailey Humphrey 2025

Jake Melksham 2018

Footywire comparison

Just a couple of clearances a game difference.

Now, I think Melksham's late career bloom at half forward is criminally underrated, but does that mean I think he was worth two first rounders? Hrmm.

Give Dan Curtin a couple of years to develop and I'm sure we can Lever him out of Adelaide.

See what I did there? Gosh I'm hilarious. Maybe we could use a Crowbar?

Then i wont be paying. Anyone that pays 3 rounders for potential just needs to look at Harley Reid. He is one more average season away before being declared overrated. I havent seen a game yet where Humphries as outright dominated. He is good and solid, but if we are looking to cough up 2-3 first rounders i know i'd be picking up the phone to Butters manager and seeing if we can deal with Port given he is a RFA.

With the recruitment of a midsized forward in Paddy Cross, with of May-replacement SSP list pick, I suspect we’ll pass (or were never in the run) on Barry, when he comes home.

Pass on Humphrey because we recruited Paddy Cross ? 😂 You must be joking

Probably the bit in the brackets, was where I was going…

With Latrelle and Matthew’s last year, we’ve been well covering the area where Barry’s played to date. Humphrey becomes interesting if he can graduate to also playing quality midfield time. Push Trac and others out of the GC midfield even for bursts and he’d be worth a couple of First Round picks.

Edited by PaulR

If right now, BH is worth 3 first rounders, then I would hate to think what Sam Darcy is worth.

Those that think 2 first rounders for Humphrey clearly don't watch the Suns or project players development. Fourth in their B&F last year behind the Brownlow medalling, current captain and All Australian and prior captain. He is super clean and dynamic and unlike some others of his age has high impact per possession. Will only improve as he further builds his tank and maturity.
Happy for us take a proven player with potential to be elite with 5 years development into him over a swing at 2 more kids (though we are pretty good at nailing them). Kay defensive posts if required can be filled via trade or free agency in my view.

Edited by Lil_red_fire_engine

Yep @Lil_red_fire_engine . If I’m the Suns I’m bare minimum wanting the equivalent of the Trac trade…….and I’d happily pay it too.

Sure we need to bring in a few before we contend again, but they need to be quality players which BH is.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
