Spot on.

The prevailing belief is the only way is up, we couldn’t do worse than we already are etc.

Hashtag beware jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Shouldn't be a problem for us demons :-)

Couldn’t see a topic on Mark Williams but confusing as he want be the development coach in 26 and the new CEO is taking of finding another role .. would you not have this done before announcing anything??? Media calling us rudderless etc

I have to agree, best practice get everything in place then blabber your mouth to the media. Now if something happens and choco leaves we look unprofessional

ALL my posts are serious!!!!

I mean his salary is going to fit between Richo and Guerra; we have to pay out Goody though if he goes to the Swans they might be paying us (thats my first silly comment for the season ok). And the new coach might want some new assistants so we have to sack someone. Thats $$$$

Im sure they have it under control.

Two Ex-Demons coaching names in Craig Jennings and Marcus Wagner come to mind for this role in my opinion. Jennings was a game strategy and education co-ordinator for us, won the AFLX premiership as the coach ; is currently at the Giants living out of a van. Would be nice to lure him back. Meanwhile Wagner was our Chief Innovation Officer, who resigned earlier this year (the rumour mill contends there was a falling out with Goodwin) Also has experience working alongside Bucks at the Pies for a number of years (could be one of Bucks people that is brought in.) Could also see it being someone different, aka a long time assistant coach at another club such as Brendon Lade from the Dogs or David Hale from the Hawks.

Mitch Cleary just said we're keen on Bartel.

We met with him last year too.

Came from a tough background, has enormous experience playing and then after retiring in footy admin, is smart and pragmatic.

Without knowing the specific requirements of the role, on what we do know, he would seem a standout candidate.

The only thing for me is the role sounds near identical to a footy boss in its scope from what little we've heard. Not sure exactly what that means whether some responsibilities of the footy boss are been delegated to this role or something?

Bartel seems like a good type to have within the club though.

It's a soft push to replace Richardson. Plus from my understanding if the role sits above the FD it doesn't fall into the soft cap?

Either way, Richardson has 12 months left on his contract, and we can't afford to pay him out and replace him. This is the way to get around that.

Is that better than blues fingers?

This seems like an easy loophole to exploit haha.

I've waited 12 months for a hip replacement.

Score more than the opposition.

I would've said 'Type numbers into spreadsheets', but in this degenerate era, it's now 'Type prompts into ChatGPT'

To cover for Richo until his contract expires. 👊

So 24 h after the question was posted, no sensible answers.

What more do you need, mon?

I reckon the role is based on two things:

  1. Effectively replacing Richo as per above

  2. Adding a "Football CEO" type role to run the football department (instead of a coach up to GM type) below our CEO who doesn't have a footy background.

Our CEO needs someone to head up that department, and they need to be part way between footy department and CEO, not too much in either camp.

Here's my attempt:

The person responsible for looking beyond the week-to-week noise and setting the long-term direction of the club. Think of them as the architect of the big picture:

  • Planning & Direction: They help define what success looks like in 3–5 years, not just next Saturday.

  • Alignment: They make sure recruiting, coaching, high-performance, and commercial decisions are all pulling in the same direction.

  • Analysis & Foresight: They track trends (list profile, rule changes, competitor tactics) and feed insights back into the football department.

  • Decision Support: They don’t pick the team, but they provide the framework that guides why certain players are drafted, developed, or traded.

  • Connector Role: Strategy managers act as translators between the board, the CEO, the coach, and the football staff. They turn corporate goals (“sustainable success,” “member growth”) into football decisions.

  • Scenario Planning: They ask “what if?” — e.g. what if our list peaks in 2026, what if the fixture compresses, what if AFLW expands?

  • Performance Review Lens: They often run the frameworks that review coaching staff and list management, making sure decisions aren’t just knee-[censored].

In footy terms, if the coach is in the trenches, the strategy manager is up in the coach’s box with the binoculars, making sure the whole operation is headed the right way.

The big one for whoever we hire is what does it mean for Max Gawn if a last touch rule is implemented, this is going to significantly change his role with no more boundary throw ins!

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
