Newton's Game

It was as good a debut as we could have hoped for. I thought he showed a lot of energy and increased maturity in that he chased hard and defended Fletcher well. It was a tough task for him first up, so I hope it gives him a lot of confidence for the future.

I'm so happy that he didn't have a howler first up.

I think he (and Robbo for that matter) had vaseline on his hands though.

It was absolutely freezing at TD last night (rubbish venue!!! ), and also a bit damp.

Ground was slippery as always, and it wouldn't surprise me if the ball was a little too.

Mind you, Mr. Baccardi had no problems holding onto his marks.

i thought juice played a very team orientated game. the stat sheet shows what 10 possessions, 1 goal 1, a couple of marks and a tackle. but this does not sum up his game at all. he had 3 assists which resulted in 2.1, and from distances he probably could have had a shot, although he went for the selfless option of a better team position. he dropped two marks out in front and that chest mark...that seems a bit out of character for juice and is undoubtedly the nerves coming through...all 3 would have given him gettable shots at goal. he stood the mark at FF on the kick outs, and always chased the player who got the ball. and i thought he played fletcher quite well (fletcher had 18 disposals, 5 marks, down on his season average of 22 and 8, which includes last night. in fact, fletcher has only had 3 games this year with less possessions). when fletcher pushed up the ground newton ran with him, but once the turn over occured, juice was back in our goal square, dragging fletcher all the way back to the last line.

i thought his leading was pretty good...made good space a few times but was ignored. playing deep with the others players we had made it a bit hard for him. robbo and neitz were both leading out as well, or often back towards full forward, while we had sylvia, and often another player inside 50 as well. this meant often he would lead out but would be cut off by a team mate who left after him, and who hadnt seen him. i think it will be interesting to see him play with out neitz around. there will be definite negatives (neitz is strong and controls the area around him with his bullocking work) however i think the number 1 forward role will suit newton, allowing him to dictate where he runs and how the forward sets up. he looks like he could be the focal point.

would've been nice to see him get a goal with his first kick instead of the point, but a scoring shot nonetheless. well done juice, i look forward to seeing more of you over the coming weeks.

I thought he was competent without being spectacular, but it was great to see a future forward being given the run.

And I was really impressed with, as others have said, his team orientated things.

This is something I believe has been missing this season and it was good to see a rookie show how important it can be.

Watching him develop in the coming weeks should be a joy to watch......hopefully :P !!!

even though we went down last night i have very high hopes for us in the coming seasons. Juice looked great for a first gamer. Petterd also played a great game. Mclean , Bell and Bate are getting better too, although Brocky needs to cool his temper a touch. Dunn and Frawley with a bit more of a chance and with Rivers Moloney etc hopefully fine for round 1 next year we might just have a decent crack at it

Apart from that dropped chest mark, he looked great.

Bring on the next JUICE lead decade.

I watched Juice last nite n thought he went pretty well for his first game.

The ball did burst through his hands a lot when he went to mark for it on the lead but he did actually manage to find space between himself and fletcher when leading. Crucial for any FF.

Marking is one aspect of his game i never thought he had a problem with so, i'll put it down to first game nerves.

He looks and moves around like a footballer.

Dunn's got nothing to worry about but i do hope Dunn comes in nxt week so they can play in tandem.

The best thing about his game tonight, was the chase he put on in the first quarter. He kept at it, and in the end forced the turnover.

Thought he showed great intelligence, and did lots of really nice, small things to help out the boys. Had at least 2 goal assists that I can remember.

Well done Juice, excellent debut game given the circumstances and the fact that you played on one of the best in the business in Fletcher. You kept him honest, which is more than a lot of forwards can say.

Well said Jaded. I was really pleased with the team efforts like that chase and some responsible play instead of trying to be the show-pony.

It's a shame that first shot didn't go through, would've been worth about $300 from the pledgers!

I don't think Dunn is in trouble, as some suggested. Dunn has added a little extra versatility lately which should see it possible for both to find spots in the team.

And you'd think Netiz will be out for a while again after last night - he was seriously banged up out there, what a freak for managing to not only play on but even keep performing.

Robbo might even miss a few as well, if we get serious about using the remainder of the year to put players through necessary surgery and rest. It's pretty clear that his knee still isn't quite 100%.

oh, and a final thought -

"Newton the hard-working responsible team player"

Daniher's final legacy?

We can't die wondering if he should have been played earlier? But based on his effort last night he was cherry ripe to debut and I hope to God he is now given every opportunity so we can ease the pressure on the Skipper and get another couple of years out of him.

Newton was good last night. Looks like he will be a good player for us for many years.

Dunn is playing as a mid/HFF at Sandy. Dunn will be good for us as well- plus he shows some agro at Sandy.

Happy with Juice's debut. Despite a few signs of inexperience and nerves, he did us proud. He's a certainty to retain his spot on that performance and the fact that Neitz will miss next week won't hurt his chances either. I think it's a pity that he had to be dragged for dropping that chest mark in the last quarter and that we didn't see him much at CHF where he would have had some more space to move around.

Dunn can play as a Ryan O'Keefe type pushing into the midfield.

Plenty of room for both Newton and Dunn.

Given the season is gone Dunn should come in, put him down back if necessary - did ok on Cornes - to further his development.

BIG RED SIGNING IN:

The most exciting thing was the Newton played like a natural key position forward. This is something we have not had aside from Neitz for a long time. Miller is not naturally gifted and Dunn is more a high flanker in my opinion. A very promising debut.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
