Why arenโ€™t we looking at someone like Cam Mackenzie from hawthorn?

He canโ€™t get a game and when they get Merritt he will certainly never get midfield time.

He would also be cheaper than Flanders should he go elsewhere?

I agree, but would imagine he could be part of a Merrett deal.

I would be into him, as we will have picks from our deals and Hawks could use picks in Merrett deal.

There's a SW Gippy trend going on here. Time to make prospects aware that our coast is Surf Coast without all the crass bits. Gen Z, come on down!

I have to say that it has surprised me that with all the moaning about Casey, noone's been pointing out the almost drought-proof farms in Gippsland (compare with around Geelong, where they are in a rainshadow from the Otways) and the surf and lifestyle opportunities on the Mornington Peninsula.

That said, coming down to Casey from near Lilydale was somewhat of a hike.....

When we say "farms" .. no one is actually..... farming ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's complicated. The new points system has definitely made it harder to match bids with rubbish picks.

The draft change adding another element to upcoming trade...

Cal Twomey takes a look at how changes to the points model could impact this year's Trade Period

GC have some very highly rated Academy players, Twomey's rating 2 - Uwland, 4 - Patterson and then 26 - Addinsall. Of course these players tend to get bid a little later than they are rated.

GC have enough points with picks 6, 13 and 16 to cover bids at the positions above but they do need them or equivalent value picks. They can't just trade 6 away.

Of course they have players up for trade: Flanders, Rosas, Fiorini, Budarick and now maybe Ainsworth who will provide points and that will make a big difference.

Our pick 23 and 24 or 37 from Spargo are pretty small beer in the equation.

It's hard to be definitive, all those players going out should nett enough points to allow them to trade say Flanders + 6 to us and maybe they'd like 23 back. IMO Humphrey is a straight swap for Petracca that if available we should take and run. Humphrey + Flanders to us would need Petracca + 12 (from GWS for Clarrie) IMO.

Yeah, I said what I said - Petracca and Oliver for Humphrey and Flanders.

Much appreciated Old! I see the other Academy members are climbing a little in draft rankings (Coulson and Murray) but I doubt late picks (40s) will trouble them, assuming they want to draft them.

The other complcating issue is FA compensation. My post was out of date even when I made it. Compensation for Allen, Draper, Silvagni etc and the WC draft concession have already or will shortly push out our original 2nd at 23 and the Spargo compensation so it's a moving feast even for a "points nerd" like me to keep up with. The only thing possible is to assess scenarios as they are presented.

Flanders has elected Saints as his landing spot. Will be interesting how this plays out now. It's not over as Gold coast hold the power here and not releasing him to the Saints. Although in saying that pick 7 holds value with the suns.

Still a bit to play out I would suggest

That's just my view btw

Pick 7 is far more than anything people on here are willing to throw down and I suspect theyโ€™ll take it and hope to make it a large part of the Trac trade. Personally (and with zero intel) I foresee the Trac circumstance dragging way out until a lot of other pieces are on the table. Flanders would be(/have been) a good pick up, still hoping Humphrey a huge one. Best of luck in the posturing Melbourne

Again I haven't heard this but maybe it has pivoted to answorth and Humphrey? I am suspecting suns thought Flanders and Bailey was too much. Still don't believe Flanders is done just yet to the Saints. Good coast could hold him to his contact or force Flanders to go to us.

Posturing

I saw a few seconds grab on channel 9 news, where Tom Morris <sigh>, mentioned at the Collingwood B&F, that Chaplin may be discussing being an assistant at the pies. Has this been discussed anywhere else or got legs?

Given mihocek requested a trade, I suspect we will wait and see what spargos compo is. Would rather they took May off our hands as a trade, hope theyโ€™re not rude about it and make it very easy. Future 4th round swaps is what it should be. Realistically for a player his age it shouldnโ€™t dilute any compensation pick anyways. Heโ€™s 8 years older than spargo!

Definitely not !

We should already know what the Spargo compo is but of course the AFL are too busy giving the Eagles, Blues, Bombers et al a leg up

I was in your camp, but if we have a spot to fill, I think he would be ok for a couple of years.

Experienced big body clearance player, who would come cheap in trade and on a cheap contract. Probably thrown into the Heath trade.

He is better than anyone we draft after first round or two and would be angry with a point to prove.

He would be a great mentor and is a decent bloke.

He is a clear salary dump by the Saints because of their new signings.

Yes he could help us for a couple of years and he in some ways fills the holes left by Tracc and Clarry as a contested clearance player.

14 hours ago, whatwhat say what said:

trade or free agency acquisition?

i thought the latter, but perhaps we don't want to dilute the spargo compo?

Does the free agency window close during a draft period? It is open now but if we canโ€™t manage a trade with the Pies can Mihocek just leave as a free agent in the last couple of mins of the trade period?

There is a 'practicality' aspect about what we need. We're not trying to build Rome in one off season after all. We'll be transitioning over a number of seasons into the new-look-style Demons.

He's ok/handy without being brilliant.

The thing is its not always about the individual...its about how it all gets and works.

Am quite fascinated about who we will be in 26

Reckon at the conclusion of the trade period we end up with at least 3 first round picks

Whether we use them all in this years draft or push some out to next year is another question

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
