  • Coach Paul Roos: brought Goodwin into his coaching panel as part of a long-term succession plan.

  • The plan was set and aimed to transition the top coaching job from Roos to Goodwin over time.

  • Roos viewed Goodwin's recruitment as an assistant as the "final piece in the puzzle" to ensure a seamless transition.

Fun fact - the apprentice job was first offered to Stuart Dew but he turned it down.

The succession plan was a requirement by Roos.

Melbourne want Buckley. Buckley wants Melbourne. But...

There are forces at play outside our control. There is an AFL Commission Chairman on the nose. There is an AFL CEO with non of his predecessors gravitas, and an ever growing penchant for getting it wrong.

Individually, and collectively, they need a win. It sure isn't flying a kite about Opening Round getting a run south of the Murray.

So they don't want the figurehead they've earmarked for Tasmania being lost to little old Melbourne.

So what to do? Well Tasmania don't have a soft cap. "Name your price". "What do you need?" "What do you want?"

This is how the AFL operate. They stink. They get their media operative Caro to drip feed enough to make it look fair without appearing to be duplicious bullies.

We are pawns in a game. Docklandsare playing along with our process for the optics only, ready to step in when there's a gap in the content echo chamber.

If we get Buckley it will be because he wants to do it enough to turn down the keys to the castle.

No one could blame him for walking away though.

Offt. James Kelly then? Or Bucks is genuinely a chance to knock the whole machine back?

Im amazed goody isn’t the new target. He’s got a better record than bucks and wants to coaxh

Hinkley would be perfect for Tassie! The AFL are dumb fools.

if what Chook says is true, Smith and Guerra should be telling Dillon in no uncertain terms to jog on

But if Buckley is so easily distracted then he can jog on too

Kind of a bad look for Skipworth imo. Outside looking in it appears he didn't impress and bailed early knowing he won't get the job. Had he stuck around for an interview I'm sure a public presser would have complimented all candidates but now I'll, rightly or wrongly, view him as the weakest candidate of this crop of aspiring coaches.

Any mail on why the AFL is obsessed with Buckley specifically @Chook in Perth? They have at least three serious other options it seems to me.

Honestly, go and listen to Skipworths media conferences on YouTube.

I know that Goody was boring enough but Skipworth is 10× level up. Uninspiring as they come.

But surely there are alternatives ... Longmire for one? Then there's Goodwin, Hinkley, Simpson, surely the AFL can crank up their PR machine to sell whoever it is they end up with?

Though when it comes to profile, Bucks is a long way in front - also perhaps why we want him.

The media (with plenty of help from people I won’t name) have just spent 5 years tearing Goodwin to shreds. Doesn’t matter that he’s a good coach.

Meanwhile Buckley is a superstar name and strong media performer who can market Tassie (including staying on Fox for at least another year), that trumps his mostly mediocre coaching record

I think CIP inferred he did have an interview and he was well behind the others, so he bowed out with appropriate

flimsy excuse.

Has anyone on the AFL thought about what stability Buckley might want by staying with his family/friends in Melbourne?

Resettling everyone he is close to and away from people he knows.

Keeping Nathan Buckley off the market is the ‘win’ they’ve earmarked?

I would be genuinely surprised if the matter is even getting a mention in the boardroom (or behind closed doors) at AFL House.

Not sure what you’re trying to say? He went through a similar interview process that we are doing now. Adam Simpson was another interviewed at the time and has spoken about it.

head office is all about the optics

appointing figjam to their taswegian franchise with a nice shiny indoors stadium to come is a big win; just ask caro

Would any of the runners up be likely to be appointed and take an assistant role to whoever gets head coach?

How much say does the head coach have in his assistants?

Sounds like the AFL might save us from ourselves.

Here's to hoping!

I would take that even further and plaster it over the whole sports media that the selection of our future Coach was interfered with, that Club and Board felt as though they were being intimidated against, and undue personal pressure was placed on candidates.

Step one: preliminary meetings with Buckley in early 2025.
Step two: politely turf Goodwin.
Step three: instead of fighting off Carlton or Essendon, we actually get ahead of the AFL itself to line up Buckley.

And then—because the AFL can’t help but meddle—they’re forced to offer up Caulfield as a home base, or other collateral or incentives, plus “mysteriously” help us land a fantastic coach (who, spoiler alert, isn’t even Buckley).

That’s not just doing a Steven Bradbury. That’s Steven Bradbury winning the Olympic gold, then being handed a lifetime supply of ice skates, and a Netflix doco deal by the IOC.

Maybe, just maybe… we actually know what we’re doing after all. 😆

Ooooh, I like it. Kelly to Melbourne and Caulfield sorted. Reckon our club might have sorted that one itself, but who knows.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
