There are forces at play outside our control. There is an AFL Commission Chairman on the nose. There is an AFL CEO with non of his predecessors gravitas, and an ever growing penchant for getting it wrong.

Individually, and collectively, they need a win. It sure isn't flying a kite about Opening Round getting a run south of the Murray.

So they don't want the figurehead they've earmarked for Tasmania being lost to little old Melbourne.

Fun fact - the apprentice job was first offered to Stuart Dew but he turned it down.

The succession plan was a requirement by Roos.

Kind of a bad look for Skipworth imo. Outside looking in it appears he didn't impress and bailed early knowing he won't get the job. Had he stuck around for an interview I'm sure a public presser would have complimented all candidates but now I'll, rightly or wrongly, view him as the weakest candidate of this crop of aspiring coaches.

But surely there are alternatives ... Longmire for one? Then there's Goodwin, Hinkley, Simpson, surely the AFL can crank up their PR machine to sell whoever it is they end up with?

Though when it comes to profile, Bucks is a long way in front - also perhaps why we want him.

The media (with plenty of help from people I won’t name) have just spent 5 years tearing Goodwin to shreds. Doesn’t matter that he’s a good coach.

Meanwhile Buckley is a superstar name and strong media performer who can market Tassie (including staying on Fox for at least another year), that trumps his mostly mediocre coaching record

I think CIP inferred he did have an interview and he was well behind the others, so he bowed out with appropriate

Not sure what you’re trying to say? He went through a similar interview process that we are doing now. Adam Simpson was another interviewed at the time and has spoken about it.
