Just on Oliver against the Pies ...

The eyes test told us that he hit a number of targets, rarely bombed it long and was creative with his handpassing

Then referring to the stats ... Clarrie had 30 possessions at 87% DE

So 26 of his 30 possessions hit a target

So the DE stat can be of some value if broken down properly. For instance, Clarrie has had a number of games this year where he rarely had any effective kicks

Again, the eyes test on Friday saw Petracca turn the ball over too much for a player of his class

Petracca had 28 possessions (14 & 14) but his DE percentage was 64% ... most of his handpasses found a target but his kicks went everywhere

So in my view, the DE percentage can be measured but the eyes test must be factored in at the same time

In a nutshell, Oliver didn't waste his possessions but Petracca was wasteful (although he did impose himself on the game in the 2nd half and won a lot of contested possessions/hard ball gets)

One of the key stats that I look at and rate is score involvements. And Clarry is often not particularly high on score involvements, particularly in the last two years. But he had 9 score involvements and 1 goal assist. It was an excellent game from him.

Interesting.

Wonder if this opens the door for a senior midfield assistant to support Nathan Jones.

Cameron Bruce comes to mind.

Kozzy butchers the footy by foot. He's brilliant around goal, but turns it over a lot further up the field.

It's weird though - perhaps I'm misremerbering but it feels like his field kicking has gone backwards this season, in large because of those strangle little dinky kicks that look too cute by half that he does at least one or twice a game now.

Perhaps it's just that he's playing way more time on the ball but those kicks seem like a new thing.

There's no reason why he shouldn't be an excellent field kick - he has a good technique and evidenced by his goal kicking accuracy.

Yeah, I think you've nailed it. It's those dinky little kicks that aren't on that he turns over.

Are you suggesting the practice footies with the special stripes on them aren’t working??!

Pickett and the dinky kick that goes 7 metres off the outside of the boot, when he could handball, are massive momentum killers. They always happen when we are on the run and lead to turnover goals. Something he is going to have to iron out. While the majority of our mids need to lower their eyes, sometimes he needs to lift his. He misses the targets 30 metres ahead, whilst trying to kick to a guy less than 10m away

What does Kozzie’s kicking (which is the absolute least of our worries - it’s not even a worry) have to do with our next freakin coach?

I don't think anyone has a clue who the next coach will be. Doubt if it will Buckley. Given the rolling administrative chaos I suspect he'll pull out before too long.

I don't know how to reply to that except to ask who do you think the best kick at the club is?

Bowey, Langford or even Lindsay.

Gee, you couldn't ask for a better time to be looking for a coach. There isn't one person from that list that I wouldn't be happy with.

They're good names but "sounded out" probably means we'd like them to apply but they might not

Imagine sacking a premiership winning coach and having little to no (better) options for a replacement. I would have preferred to have fired the entire inept board. I’d also ban anyone who has held a ‘leadership’ position at a big firm from applying.

Let's just say Nathan Buckley gets the gig for arguments sake.

Would Nathan then put the question to Jordan Lewis to become involved at some level whether that be the newly formed position of head of strategy or some other role that's less time demanding.

This might help Nathan adjust to the club overall with Jordan having spent time with the club.

CHRIS FROM CAMBERWELL might finally get his wish of having Jordan involved at some level.

Is Chris in Dland?

We should also be looking for an assistant coach to coach the forwards preferably someone who played as a forward who knows and can teach forward craft.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
