Don’t kid yourself. We outscored them after they blitzed us and had the game won midway through the second quarter. When it mattered we got a chasing.

We kicked 3 goals in the last 4 minutes. Take that out and your stats don't look so good.

Ha! But what I mean is I’m pretty sure the AFL rules prevent us from formally interviewing/appointing someone with a club in the finals.

Have no understanding of said rules.

I couldn't see anyone involved in finals donning a Dees hat until finished.

Monday's fine 😉

I've just taken a quick trip forward in the time machine and recorded half a dozen of the many questions asked by the panel and the corresponding answers given by unsuccessful applicants.

1 - Where do you see the team finishing in 2026? "I'd say my biggest weakness is not listening".

2 - The position requires a responsible person. "I'm your man. In my last job, when anything went wrong, they said I was responsible".

3 - What is your greatest strength? (30 minutes later ) "I'm very comfortable with silence".

4 - Would you be willing to relocate? "Of course. Where would you like me to sit?"

5 - Why did you leave your last job? "It was something my boss said". What did your boss say? "You're fired".

6 - Can you perform under pressure? "No, but I'll give Bohemian Rhapsody a go".

Get this guy. I don't get the Buckley love. We need ideas from winning assistants who want their own team. Daly's tough, a bit old school and has helped transform the Lions into consistent finals team. (yes they've had some father son help) Tell me, What's Buckley done again?

Im neither for nor against Bucks. I could live with it... hopefully a wholly rejigged FD too.

That said ... I think Daly could be an inspiring selection.

For a start, they're not my stats! Secondly, they kicked three goals in just over four minutes in the first... take that out and 'my stats' would look even better!

Fair to say their first 3 were far more influential than our last

The only problem with your logic is that at the start we were trying (or should have been) and at the end they weren't (and didn't need to).

I thought Hawks did need to keep trying because of a small percentage gap. (I haven't followed what's what in the finals rankings, but I thought one of the commentators mentioned their percentage as being significant).

You're overthinking it!

Buckley led his own team to finals 5 times and within a Dom Sheed kick of a flag. Nothing against Daly but your general description would also fit Mark Neeld.
Whether its Bucks, Daly or whoever we need someone who commands respect, comes from a winning culture and is hungry to coach the ultimate success. You could argue both fit the bill in different ways dependant on what narrative you want to set.

The reports that we want to appoint someone before the GF would all but rule out anyone from a team that make it past the first week of finals.

We can appoint them prior to the GF and they can start immediately after.

I would hate to miss out on a great opportunity for the sake of 1-2 weeks

A new coach might/should be looking at that thinking that he hasn’t got many cards to play if he is to get us back into contention immediately, which appears the expectation.

Very true. A lot of people thnk the new coach will solve our problems and we'll be playing finals soon but I don't think that's realistic. We need to overhaul the list before we can contend again.

Like The Saints did to us....

Bucks was at the Pies for what, 24 years and never won a flag. And that’s Despite taking over a premiership team as coach

I think he is a decent choice but he hasn’t proven himself a winner yet.

One very special kick away from a flag.... but yeah pillory him for sure.

Not particularly advocating for nor against but he has decent football knowledge.

They were 12-7 last year, then lost their last 4 games to miss finals.

If they then back that up by missing again this year, that is a level of mediocrity/failure that would have Demonlanders rioting with pitchforks if it were us.

This is a club with a stacked list (Serong, Brayshaw, Jackson, Young and Bolton in the middle, Treacy, Voss and Amiss up forward with Frederick and Switkowski (edit: and Reid!), and a very well drilled backline with Pearce, Cox, Ryan, Chapman and Clark).

Plus they had an extra home game with North selling one to Perth.

If they lose to the Dogs next week, and if GWS, GC and Hawthorn all win once, they’re out.

They should be ensconced in the top 4, not battling for finals.

Longmuir should absolutely be in danger if they miss.

Agree. And maybe he re joins Buckley at Melbourne next year. 😉

100% - ridiculous to suggest they put the cue in the rack.

Gunston was asked about the importance of percentage in his post match, on ground interview and he said they we're aware of the importance of maximising percentage in terms of their final ladder position

(they are on outside chance of finishing top 4 - if they do it will be on percentage. And if they don't percentage might be the difference between playing a home elimination final at the G or an interstate elimination final).

The last 5 minutes they started going slow....players may want %, but they also do not want to get injured before finals.

Not cue in rack but they definitely did try and slow it up.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
