Can’t say that I’m impressed by the timing or the decision. For me to have faith in the decision the club would need to show me there is top down leadership in place. Both Guerra and Smith should have their name to this decision but they don’t, unless they are behind the scenes pulling the strings. As far as I’m aware that has not been communicated to members? Just an opinion and I’m sure there are many, but the right thing to do would be to let him coach out the year and do what we had to do as a club in the background to canvas options. Unless they have a coach already lined up and ready to go I don’t understand the benefit of it.

How bloody typical the club didn't get ahead of this and show Goody the respect he deserves and make a proper announcement instead of leaking to Tom Morris (whichbis clearly what's happened, ir if they didn't they knew it would come our because they told Goody ladt night and didn't have a presser first thing this morning)

That puff piece by Gleeson the other day was basically a board written background piece and in hindsight laying the ground fir today's strategic leak.

Yep, the whole thing stinks.

Shows where we are at the moment. How can we perform on the field if we can't/won't do this stuff right?

They'd have to have someone in the crosshairs. That is the only plausible reason to go with this bonkers timing.

I'm not even ready yet to do a heartfelt thankyou to Goody for his contributions, too soon.

Sick of this. It has been reported everywhere, the journalist was told by someone at the club. Journalists have always broken news.

Wow, sad for Goody I hope this was his call to leave right now and have it announced after a win, he deserves everyone's respect. Thank you Goody for the premiership, that was a lifetime highlight right there and I honestly didn't think I'd ever experience it :)

Now for the replacement...anyone hear any trotting sounds? Keep your ears to the ground...we'll go riding on the horses yeah yeah

no. have some class and wait until the players know.

I was genuinely of the belief they'd come to an agreement and he'd resign with a similar payout to what his contract stipulates. I am not comfortable with it being a sacking. He deserved better.

But let's move on quickly. I would suspect they have eyes firmly on Longmire or Simpson. Buckley seems destined for Tassie.

Hope whoever takes the reigns this weekend has been tasked with giving the young/fringe guys a chance for the next coach to see. Goodwin may well have been sacked now rather than in three weeks so that he didn't run the same guys into the ground to improve our W/L.

111-90-1 Record

5-5 Finals, broke a 12 year drought

2021 Premiership, broke a 57 year drought

Forever a legend of the club and sad to see it end like this. Love you Goody and hope whatever is next goes well.

And all the other papers who reported it at the same time?

That's the only plausible explanation. Hopefully. And not just a completely kneejerk reaction to calls of us being rudderless etc and Greeny just trying to act presidential.

Luke Hodge rightfully scathing on SEN, not regarding the decision itself, but the leaking of the decision before informing the playing group.

I have zero faith in our board being capable of making the right call on a new coach. Incompetence personified.

This is exactly what needed to happen. he said there would be a game plan change in 2025 when it needed to happen in 2022.

Thank you for Goodwin for 21.

I already feel fresh for 2026 and have some excitement left in me.

@Demonland

I thought make the decision at the end of the 2025 season. Dees would move to dismiss Goodwin and payout him for 2026.

Terrible timing from the 🤡board 🤡with 3 games to go in the season. Not the way to treat a man who delivered a premiership. A little respect could have been shown.

Thanks Goody for your service and for 2021 🏆

Ruthless and applauded move FOR A CHANGE! Get ur nana stockings of, Yes , applauded for Premiership YES but gutsy and correct move IMO

From Gleeson's article:

"Goodwin’s departure is unlikely to be the last significant personnel change at the club".

How do you or Hodge's know its come from the club side of the camp???

Goody makes a couple of calls or his wife does and its out... just as likely as the club side

I'm with Hodgy, find out who leaked and get rid of them as well !!

Disgraceful isn't it. But it's common from the club and makes me think the club is trying to get on the "front foot" by going to the media first. In the comms/PR world there is a cohort who are obsessed with controlling the external narrative and they forget about the internal narrative. Players finding out after the public is absolutely disgraceful. Whether it's Melbourne or otherwise. BUT it might also be the boarding leaking.

Having the uncertainty surrounding Goodwin is / was not good for player retention.

Thanks for 2021 Goody, you will forever be remembered for that!

Proud the club had what it takes to make the right / tough call, many didn’t see this coming, we move fwd now.

Back to playing finals in 2026.

Maybe he was told he will go at end of the season and he walked.

I think this is 100% the case. It does say a lot though at the relationship.

He had every right to walk as he probably disagrees with the decision and sticking around would be extremely awkward.

Effing disgraceful way to treat a premiership coach. You want premierships every year, complain that the rest of the comp has changed and when we implement change to evolve our game, there's inherent impatience and indignation that it takes time... Absolutely cynical move to do it now, when we've got one home game left for the season so we can 'send him off'. I'd take Goodwin over Brad Green any day. I await the grovelling email in my inbox... Thanks for everything, Simon... This club never really appreciated what you gave to it.

There is no excuse for leaking. NONE. Do we know for fact that the players didn’t know? I suspect they would have found out last night as well.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
