What should motivate players - hating and fearing the guy that coaches them? That's pretty old school. There'll be members who want a coach who sprays them at half time and smashes the phone in the coaches box, and members who prefer a coach who the players like being around. Each to their own, but I can understand and applaud Ed for speaking his mind and taking issue with a relatively faceless 'Board' who make decisions that the players don't agree with.

I never said anything about recruiting an old school belligerent coach.

But when your captain says we lack ruthlessness and we need to learn how to win, how could you not want more from your coach or department?

We all know this group can achieve more than they have the last 2 years.

Yes sorry I should have said that it was just the leadership team in that zoom call. So it's either a player in the leadership team or a board member/club staffer in the know that leaked it

A bit of disruption might be good for these boys

You don’t like honesty from our players? I love Ed for telling everyone exactly how he and the other players feel about this sad and sorry mess.

Folks complain about players and coaches trotting out the same old hackneyed bs lines, then Ed speaks from his heart and you think he needs a distraction???!

Who said he can't speak for himself? Was not me

Just sounded like a player content, not a player striving for a premiership

We'll have to agree to disagree on the first point. I didn't see much different game style wise and the same issues that have been there for years persisted.

Agree on your second point, Richo was foisted upon us by the AFL with the help of his mate Pert, can't think of any positives he's actually brought to the club and should have been out the door last year.

there has been a clear change in game style to the eye, especially the second half of the season and the stats back that up.

If you still think we just bomb it down the line all the time I suggest you watch closer and also watch what other teams do Gonzo

You’re clearly not familiar with Ed. Dude’s so chill he’s a heartbeat away from a coma.

Also, he doesn’t sound like a player striving for a premiership? What does that sound like? Should he have passionately said “YES! THE BOARD IS SPOT ON… WE NEED A NEW VOICE!!” Would that have fit the brief? Never mind that this isn’t how he feels.

What a [censored] show. 🤦

it was the leadership group that had a zoom meeting at 8-830, with the whole player group to meet at 10am 1 hour before training.

unfortunately some moron decided to tell tom morris

I’m really not sure what people expect Ed to say? He says the players had a good relationship and loved Goody. I don’t think the board disagreed with that.

But loving someone is not always enough. Players may love him but also think we need a change, or they might be blinded by their affection towards him. As the saying goes, love is blind.

I agree … so much arrogance from a supporter base who assume that with the team we had we should have won multiple premierships.

I think the vast, vast majority of supporters who take a close look at the game (as opposed to saying they barrack for Melbourne and glancing at scores every now and then) don't think this. They understand very well that premierships are extremely hard to win.

But they do crave multiple solid performances in finals in consecutive years. It's not a guarantee of a flag, but it gives you a much better chance than hoping everything goes right in a single season.

It wasn’t a player, the players found out via Facebook and other socials at the same time everyone else did.

That is a disgrace and speaks to poor management and governance. Regardless of whether the decision to sack Goody was right or wrong, letting even one player find out via social media is utterly unacceptable.

Also I hope you’re doing ok.

My biggest dissapointment with this group and 22/23 is we put ourselves into a position the whole year to win those games of football, and the one thing that let us down was our forward entry/goalkicking. Which has now plagued us for the past 3 years.

I have no conceviable idea how we havent managed to fix this

Any opinions, overt or otherwise?

Poor Ed. An absolute no win question. It was absolutely clear Goody had a great relationship with the players. The phrase "new voice" really has little to do with that but rather fresh ideas, strategy and motivation.

Surely when any organisation Board sacks the OIC, the responsibility to advise the participants is paramount.

Not via maggot Media, who are normally the instigators anyway.

I liked Eds honesty and clearly the players loved Goodwin which we all knew anyhow.

The issue is, when players become way too comfortable and close to the coach then you start to get complacency and players dictate what they can and can't do. They run their own race which is a recipe for disaster.

This has been going on for too long now and there been no accountability from coaches to leadership.

Players need to take a huge chunk of responsibility for the sacking of Goodwin. The on field performance from the players and so called leaders has been simply unacceptable for 2 years now.

Interesting looking at the ladder as it sits.

The only recycled coach in the top 12 is Dimma, and he jumped off the sinking ship.

The bottom six have Scott, Voss, Lyon, Clarkson & two newbies.

Can't see any value in recycling.

A new regime always wants their own man.

It was inevitable.

I can't be bothered going back through my posts but I did mention this during the 0-5 period.

No, no no. You clearly don't get it.

It will be different this time, especially if we can land Collingwood's version of Simon Goodwin (minus the premiership success).

It was incredibly disappointing. I'd go further and say that making three finals series in a row is certainly good by Melbourne standards. By other teams' standards it's thoroughly mediocre (and that's being very generous).

Sydney - rarely out of finals. Eight finals appearances in a row between 2010 and 2018.

Geelong - rarely out of final. Eight in a row during the glory years. Six in a row under Scott.

Collingwood - eight from 2006 til 2013.

Brisbane - seven over the last seven seasons.

Hawthorn - seven in a row during the glory era.

West Coast - six in a row under Simpson.

Numerous other teams have played in four consecutive finals series in the last 20 years. And several teams have put together much longer finals runs with small dips out of the finals in between.

The last time we put together four finals appearances in a row was under John Northey.

Langdon's comments 100% confirm a new voice was needed. Way too comfortable and to draw or reveal a divide between players and Board isn't on from a senior player and tells me (as many suspected) the players have been running the place.

Those saying "what do you expect him to say" - you expect him to say "we loved goody, but are excited for a change and the challenge that can bring". You don't expect him to say "you'd have to ask the Board". Very poor.

Results speak louder than words. Loving your coach is not mutually exclusive with needing a fresh voice.

Also who can take him seriously in that beanie 😂

It’s also the players that haven’t been performing so it’s fair to say that they don’t know what they need. Being hum-hah with the coach isn’t necessarily the key ingredient for success.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
