Sack him weeks ago - good decision

Sack him now - "disgraceful" decision

Sack him in 3 weeks - good decision

You are making heaps of sense

As tough as it is, the decision had to be made. Sad to see him go after so much blood, sweat and tears.

But the facts are, Goodwin had a grade A list and since the flag he said every year we will compete, suffered back to back straight sets exits, and as we speak, staring down back to back bottom 6 finishes, with not as much injuries opposed to other clubs.

Fans and club should feel aggrieved. No other professional sport, club or code would tolerate back to back underperformances, let alone the 4 years Goodwin got since the flag.

It's disappointing how quickly some of our supporters forget that we made the top 4 in 2022 and 2023 and were never outside the top 8 during that entire time.
That's no mean feat, particularly in the seasons immediately following a premiership when you become the hunted and everyone is zeroing in on ways to try and beat you.

2024 there were plenty of reasons outside of coaching that contributed to where we ended up.
No Brayshaw, losing Petracca mid-season, Oliver playing injured, parting ways with Harmes/Jordan before we knew we'd lost Brayshaw and a bunch of kids doing their best to plug the gaps in the meantime.

2024/2025 off season was a shambles and this season hasn't been good at all, but there are still "reasons", the most significant of which (besides poor form of some key senior players at the same time as we are trying to transition to a new game style), was the huge loss of ANB.

It can't be overstated how massive the losses of ANB and Brayshaw have been, both culturally and with their on-field leadership.
You can't replace guys like that during the trade and draft period.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get howled down by the regular crew, but I personally think Goodwin had done more than enough to deserve the opportunity to see out his tenure and finish what had been started.

Can anyone recall a head coach sacking that didn't come out through media at least a few hours prior to the announcement?

It happens most times.

And clearly the players knew before Morris stated it. Gawn rang Goody at 7am

It sounds like they gave him the option to, and he decided not to.

I understand the point of view around timing, but the decision was made following a scheduled board meeting, and it would be crazy to decide to sack the coach and not tell him straight away. If it got out it would be that much worse.

And I strongly believe we wanted to pull the trigger before another club sacked their coach cough Voss cough

The only alternative is to tell Goody the moment he walks in the door, but then he doesn’t have time to tell his family or prepare for the day.

The fact the 2 main journos had the story at exactly the same time tells me it wasn’t an unforeseen leak.

You need to join the dots a little more carefully!

Apparently more change in the coaching department is coming, so I assume Richardson is next, maybe followed by the fitness coach and Choco

Richardson is out but will still be at the club.

Disgraceful move by a rudderless board.

The time for this decision was in three weeks.

I had lost faith in Goody to turn the ship, but was prepared for whatever decision the club made.

That decision should have happened at the end of the season.

I have absolutely no faith in this board or admin to make the right decision. They can't even oversee a FD review properly or ask a CEO his start date before appointing him. Amateur hour.

Thank you, Goody for a decade of great service to our club. Despite the lows last year and this year, you have put our club back on the map, my family and I saw a flag we thought we'd never see under your reign and almost always, we've been competitive on field when you've been our coach. Good luck for the future.

As for our club, let's hope the board can accidentally get something right.

Why would they wait 3 weeks if they have made a decision, get it done and get moving on finding a new coach.

Curious - not sure why they would retain him if he has performed poorly enough to be moved on as Football Manager

Concern for salary cap if they move him on fully?

It’s a brutal industry and I feel very sorry on a personal level for Goody and his family but the performances over the past 2 years meant his time was up. I’m sure he felt that he could turn things around but there is a fine line between self-belief and delusion. I hope he finds something good for himself in the future.

The decision shouldn't have been made IMV until the end of the season.

I'm not a Goodwin fan, but I thought he conducted himself very well all things considered.

Green was pretty unimpressive and I feel less confident in our ability to navigate our way through this mess than I did half an hour ago.

Brads not a good media performer, and thats OK not everyone is and its not a prerequisite for the job. He spoke better than I expected he would.

If they'd sacked him in the middle of the year that would have made a lot more sense than waiting until 3 weeks before the end of the season...

I can't speak to the reasoning. Educated guess but potentially linked to the softcap?

Either way, we'll have a new Football Department head ('GM of Football Performance'?)

3 weeks could be crucial in securing interviews with candidates, especially if Voss is sacked before the season is up.

We would want someone to start ideally as soon as possible, but certainly before the trade and draft period. You want your new coach involved in list management.

Sacking a coach is always terrible, the timing doesn't make it less so. I think we are all quite blind sighted but waiting another 3 games wouldn't have made it any easier on Goody, he might have been even more annoyed to find he was coaching for no reason.

Had we sacked him post the St Kilda loss or mid season, would that have made the decision wiser or better or more reactionary?

I think a handover plan or transition to a new coach would have been more appropriate for a premiership coach.

This decision has a 1990's feel to it, and without any evidence of their being a watertight plan for a better successor, Im concerned we could end up like Carlton or Essendon. Constant changing of the guard all to the detriment of the club.

In the board we trust?!!? Hope they don't just listen to Matthew Lloyd.

I suspect it was a drive by of pert who yes was CEO when we won the flag but as good notes that followed a period of stabilty when PJ and Mahoney were in charge.

The implication being Per didn't bring stability - and nor did he deliver a home base, something he made central to his vision from the get go (and then stepped down but remained in a project management role to deliver the home base - which he has again failed to land).

Sliding door moment when the board rejected PJs advice to go with a succession plan involving Mahoney becoming CEO and instead went witn Pert whose ladt few years as CEO of the pies were fractious.

Yep. The bit where he credited PJ, Mahoney, Viney and no one else was a telling moment. Interesting Roos didn't get a shout out either. Something always been off between the two of them.

Yeah, I'm thinking that the writing on the wall r.e Voss forced their hand to move now, as opposed to end of season. I agree, three weeks can be huge in getting the ball rolling with recruitment, although it's likely there are already some identified targets.

What? Why?

Educated guess, but I would suspect the softcap has a lot to do with it given we've paid out Goodwin. I'm unsure how lateral movements factor in though, with regard to softcap TEPs.

You obviously have/had extremely low expectations of Green

To me that was one of the most amateurish performances I've ever had the displeasure to witness

God help this football club if that effort reflects in any way the competency of the Board that is apparently making sound decisions about our future direction

Simon spoke well and I personally wish him well. Hopefully this decision is the right one for all concerned but to me I have significant doubts as someone looking in from the outside not knowing all the facts

51 minutes ago, Deeko2 said:

I'd be surprised if it was leaked from the board.

Could have very easily been Goody himself who leaked it out? Maybe even accidentally.

His family would be aware straight away obviously, then it wouldn't take a great deal from then on.

Also, Gawn knew from 7.30am this morning. He might have messaged a few mates and then its basically out and about in the world. Bad news travels incredibly fast.

Which is why i said in previous post that it was either directly leaked by the board or knowing full well as soon as Goody was told it would get out there, they allowed the jungle drums to beat for hours.

The result is exactly the same.

Dees fans find out from Tom Morris our premiership coach has been sacked.

If they wanted to treat Goody with a modicum of respect they could have spoken to him in the evening, given him some time to come to terms and had the presser ready to roll 8am this morning giving no time for the ghouls to go to work.

I have little doubt they backgrounded Gleeson a few days ago to lay the ground for Goody's sacking.

You, me and seemingly few others. I've never understood the supporter mentality that one premiership after 57 years is success but ultimately the lack of back-to-back-to-back-to-back premierships is a pitchforking failure. Onwards we go, but I don't assume upwards.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
