The simple fact of the matter is that since 2000, Melbourne have not gone forward. Since 2000 (and I'll include 2007 because we won't make the finals this year), Melbourne's record is:

1. No top 4 finishes

2. Two wins in finals matches from six matches, both coming in 1st round Elimination Finals

3. Winning percentage of 46.7% (after the Richmond game)

I admire loyalty, and the need to show some professionalism is important in recruiting a new coach and in going aggressively after high quality trades. On the basis of the three points above, Neale Daniher cannot be reappointed for 2008.

Make the decision now with him having the option to resign or to coach out the year and make it public. The point has already been made by a number of others about the need to re-energise the club with regard to sponsorship and membership so I'm not going to repeat those.

There is only two things left to get out of this year - a clear view as to which players should stay, and some enthusiasm for 2008.

It's interesting that Friday night's result has suddenly got everyone calling for Daniher's head again in the wake of successful outings against Adelaide and Collingwood, two top 4 aspirants. I know his head has been on the block all season, early injury woes, not withstanding. However, given the somewhat mitigating circumstances of those injuries, coupled with the mentioned winning performances, and some unlucky losses to Port, The Dogs and the Kangas, our season could still be alive.

Friday night was abysmal and we all have the right to have a crack at the coach, after all he has been here ten years, as well as the players, but whether isolated or symptomatic of a more deeply rooted problem, is open to conjecture.

Whatever the decision on whether to extend or end the coach's tenure, he has bled for the place for the past ten years. He has spruiked as well as coached, he has weathered lost draft picks and civil war at board level. He has endured the lack of resources not suffered by many other clubs, yet for the whole journey he has had the club's best interests at heart. I'd also suggest that that heart is now a bit more red and blue than red and black. The Bombers don't necessarily beckon.

His time has perhaps now come and the time is right to change our coaching direction. Trade and draft time is always a difficult period with the changing of the coaching guard but decisions need to be made. I only hope that for his sake and for the sake of the club, that whatever the outcome, it's done with his dignity intact. He deserves at least that.

And as for some of the players, they are now playing not only for their livelihood but for their AFL lives because a new coach, while he can bring a new opportunity for some - he can also bring a new broom.

For me, the big question is not if it is the coach or the players, but what is it that we need to change in the team (players and coach) - physical, mental, spiritual to get us the goal we all know is set - a Flag (or a series of them).

Therefore, the club knows the goal but not how this group will reach it.

Clarity from the board would be to set clear, minimum KPIs that have to be met by the whole football department. If 'Dusty Danners' and the rest of the group can't meet them, then they are out. Get in who can.

Danners is paid to the end of the year, keep him there. Smarter would be to get his replacement in as soon as possible to learn what is really going on, so for Draft / Trade / Preseason, they are already fully aware and can begin exercising control.

I was happy to just read posts till I read this one. You have got to be joking! Chris Connolly? He has turned a top 4 side into an also ran . Imagine what he'd do to us. I'd like Todd Viney or Guy McKenna personally.

Thank god Daniher will go at the end of the year. His time is up he has not changed the club one bit. Every year for the last 20 years we have come to expect massive losing streaks and losing to sides that are on the bottom, injury riddled and\or on massive losing streaks themselves.

Even though I'm happy that he's going please do not go for anyone at Fremantle they are the reason why we are in this mess. Daniher was from Freo as well as his assistant Riley and our recruiting\ list manager Cameron was from Freo as well. Freo have been a joke since day 1 and they proved it again this year by playing ordinary football all year when everyone expected them to go close to the flag. They also can't control their players like Tarrant and Farmer plus they have had the most number of suspentions this year by a long way. Stay away from Connelly and Harvey.

Todd Viney should be the man. Club captain, B&F winner twice and in the team of the century and tough as nails. Has been with a team that started from scratch and has gone with youth and is now a team on the rise so he has seen how it can be done I would love to see him back at the Demons.

Don't make the assumption that people are judging ND based on the past 12 rounds.

Btw, the guys that are 30 were rookies when ND came to the Club. If there are problems with the team, which is where you suggest people apportion blame initially, I suggest you keep that in mind.
