Look this doesn't really need a thread, but i am on my lunch break at work and I opened my phone and I clicked 'memories' on Facebook and it reminded me that on this day in 2018 we beat Carlton by 109 points and it made me smile.

And I thought others may also take joy in remembering when we beat Carlton by 109 points.

CARLTON   3.1    5.3    7.6    7.8 (50)
MELBOURNE    3.4    10.4    18.6    25.9 (159)

GOALS
Carlton:
McKay 2, Lamb 2, Fisher, Murphy, Cripps
Melbourne: Melksham 5, T.McDonald 4, Neal-Bullen 4, Fritsch 2, Hannan 2, Viney, Petracca, Gawn, Harmes, Jones, Gawn, Oliver, Hogan

BEST Carlton: Cripps, Graham, Fisher, Murphy, Rowe
Melbourne: T.McDonald, Melksham, N Jones, Brayshaw, Gawn, Lever, Neal-Bullen

Great day, I'd missed the 2004 landslide over Carlton so hadn't seen us win by 100+ since Richmond '93. Was present for enough losses between 100 and 186, so it was nice to get one the other way.

2018 was one of my most favourite year supporting the Dees other then 2021.

We played such a fast brand of footy and then to have the win like we did against WC at Subi which was going to confirm our finals spot for the first time in 12 years.

The wave of new generation talent in Oliver, Brayshaw, Petracca, Hogan, Weideman coming through...

I thought we were going to steam roll WC in that prelim final.

ahhh 2018.. i was living in Europe at the time (ooh la la), doing a uni exchange, and i remember watching games in the back of cabs and in summery backyards from amsterdam to athens.. watched the dreaded west coast loss at a little apartment on the island of samos (a greek island in the aegean sea, just off the coast of turkey). i don't actually recall watching this carlton game.. might put that down to being in amsterdam? damn melksham has been a servant hasn't he? 5 goals back then and 4 goals the other day..

I was living in Melbourne at the time and could actually get to games and watch training.

The finals atmosphere at the G was [censored] outrageous.

I have absolutely no recollection of Carlton players named Lamb, Graham or Rowe. Probably why they lost by 109 points.

Gosh 2018 was a fun season. The first time in ages we actually got to believe. Pity it ended the way it did, but we’d probably squeezed every drop we could have out of that season.

Hannan running in to the open goal in the EF against Geelong is still one of my all time goosebumps moments.

Melksham's goal from outside 50 in the final quarter of the semi final was high up there too. The crowd went absolutely nuts after that.

With the left foot, too!

25.9 - a day out on the accuracy front on the scoresheet. 10 of the 12 goalkickers are still plying their trade in the AFL 7 years down the track, and 14 of the 22 in the whole team (should be 15, as Gus played as well). With hindsight that’s a good metric for why we had such a strong performance from 2021-2024. And for the record, 3 votes J. Melksham - the same bloke who received 8 coaches votes at his last start, 7 years on.

I looked at the stat sheet for the game, and the weirdest thing was that player C. Oliver had 26 disposals without taking a mark - the only player on the field to not do so. Strange. Even Pat Kerr, playing in his only ever game, took 2 marks among his 7 possessions.

I recall our accuracy in 2018 was always pretty bloody good, because we took the majority of shots from inside 30. Quite like Collingwood in 2023.

@WheeloRatings , do you have these sort of stats mate?

Yes that was a fun season – I can’t recall those Carlton players either, but I think they were from their foreign legion days, when they thought it was a good idea to recruit exGWS players and ended up with a GWS seconds side 😂

Do my eyes decieve me or is Gawn named twice in the goal kickers? No wonder we won by over 100. Can't understand why we never persisted with the 2 Gawn strategy!!!

On a separate note, I promised my daughter that year that we that if we made finals I would take her down to Melbourne for them. We got down to the Hawthorn final and a magnificent night and trip it was!!!!

I don't have the location of all shots pre-2021, but I have the location of shots resulting in a score since 2014.

42% of Melbourne's scores in 2018 were from inside 30 metres compared to the comp average of 38%. This was Melbourne's highest season % in the data I have access to. Melbourne was only at 31% last season (AFL avg 36%) and 34% this season (AFL avg 35%).

That win was Optus, first time we played there and beat them. Think the last time we played them at Subiaco was when Tmac won the game for us almost at the death with the goal from top of the square whilst being tackled

I can’t believe that T-Mac goal was way back in 2017. Time flies.

Leaving that game I overheard a father consoling his young son wearing a Hawthorn jumper. Dad was consoling his boy saying "there's always next year."

For a moment I pitied that young man, born too late to experience the flags and success of the 2008-2012 Hawks.

Only for a moment.

Was there with my daughter. Was an awesome day!

  • AFLW PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If you’re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footy—you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Casey’s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down there—and good luck!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
