Nice goal, but it wasn’t express pace taking him away from defenders, he just had a good angle and the Hawks missed some tackles.

    Spargs seems to be always running on the spot and only comes into games in the last quarter when the opposition are tired and the game opens up.

    1 goal in 10 games is not good enough for a modern day small forward.

    I’d like to see Kynan in favour of Spargs, but Viney will come in and it’s a matter of who goes out. Sharp is the new whipping boy but he needs some time to settle into the team. Chin was the whipping boy in past years and judged harsh by many supporters. Sharp has the ability to play a role and has kicked 6 goals whilst playing many games as the sub.

    I wouldn’t be disappointed if Viney and Brown came in for Spargo and Sharp tho.

    Would think Laurie gets a crack at the seniors before Brown, been far better at Casey and uses the ball better. Tackle numbers similar.

    I partly agree about depth but feel both Spargs and Sharp have had ample time to clinch regular spots as of now.

    Time to give Pup ( Kynan) a go and take a chance on either Sestan or Adams if the injury or form necessitates.

    Keep Sharp ahead of Spargo - taller, can kick further than 30 metres, has pace, and actually kicks the occasional goal that Spargo does not.

    Not sure what to do about Lever - all defenders going well and we already have 7 who offer different things (Salem, windsor, McVee, Bowey, May, TMac, Turner) 8 if you count Rivers occasionally. Turner makes the others better because he can play tall, great closing speed and is physical We also need him to have continuity in defence as TMac probably retires next year and May won't go on much longer.

    You have not heard of AdaMMs.?

    Windsor to preferably centre or wing

    Come on, it was so clearly a set play to a leading Milkshake to execute a kick akin to the old 3.0 degree of difficulty in olympic diving.

    Sharp gets himself where he needs to be which is a positive, he’s also quick. The downsides are he’s a deer in the headlights with the ball. I’m sure he trains well but do you want him on GF day?

    Sharp has done a lot of good things this year, particularly when others haven't exactly played lights out football. He's also well regarding inside the changeroom and by the coaches. But I agree, is he a lot better than a Laurie, Billings, Sestan, Woey etc to keep his spot or is he on a similar level (ie a really really good VFL player, but not quite an AFL lock)

    Viney and Clarry to could share it, start one in the tagging role, then see how it's going and how fatigued etc they are getting, then switch it up with the other one. That will def keep oppo coaches on their toes.

    It was Raynor - the faux tough guy. Dangerous action, Viney out for 2 weeks with concussion for essentially the same action.

    Yeah he’s starting to find his confidence in his marking around the ground. For just a few minutes a quarter whilst one of the talls are on the bench he could be the extra marking option.

    I have a couple issues with this post.

    1. A player that has had chances at afl level and find themselves in the VFL shouldn't be written off. We wouldn't be doing it with JvR (who's played 4x the amount of games Laurie has). Players develop their games at different rates and Laurie has been putting consistent solid football in the twos.

    2. There seems to be an ongoing myth that Laurie is this 50+ gamer that's been around for 8years. He's played 11 games in 4 years (now into yr 5). 6 of those games were as starting sub. So only 5 starts in those games. He has never played more than 2 games in a row. Compare that to Sharp who has played 10 games already for us, Tholstrup 20, Woewodin 21.

    3. Laurie is playing far better footy in near identical roles, mid/half forward rotation, and is a far better user of the footy.

    Don't get me wrong, I don't think Laurie is a star in waiting and I actually like Brown as a developing player. But in my view Laurie is by far more deserving of a spot in the current 22 by recent standards.

    All good points. If he does earn another chance and a block of games I'm more than happy to be proven wrong!

    At least he's consistent ... from memory the last match he played was also a 5-possession game.

    Lots of bluster, but if you look past that I'm really not sure he's bringing much. Perhaps his physical aggro is helping those around him, but only the inner circle would know that.

     

    Just re Spargo: he has missed a LOT of footy, understandable that he's taking time to get up to speed.

    Whether they persevere with him I have no idea. He certainly brings attack on the ball, but once again, is it enough?

    Pity there's no-one really in the VFL banging the door down. Perhaps Brown. Equally, with Viney and presumably Lever back in, I can't see them making a third change to a winning side so I'd imagine Charly gets another week - even as sub?

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

    • REPORT: St. Kilda

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
