I hope i don't get banned for religious comments. Could Max be the next pope

As a Catholic, I don't take offense to this.

Max Gawn has to get the 3 Brownlow votes this evening.

He was monumental yet again!

Was probably a totally complete game from him.

Daniel Turner was pretty impressive too.

Kade Chandler has also greatly matured and improved as a footballer.

Max seemed to mark the ball in the backline to save a goal against us and then magically appear up fwd.

Defied the time space continuum.

Also I finally think Chin has arrived as a high quality player.

Much more consistent and seems to have gained more speed.

Has picked up where Anb left but has more goal awareness.

Edited by leave it to deever

I know it's just the eagles but how good to be winning again ?

Especially against those booing yobbos

I hope their stupid eagle snuffs it during the week or gets shot down by a farmer somewhere.

Anyway that's three in a row

Four definitely puts us back in contention .

The most consistent performing eagle is the eagle itself - 200 straight games now. Why you’d wish anything but freedom for that bird is beyond me.

Was reading the votes and Milkshake got a few.

I thought he was good as well.

Didn't set the game in fire but by golly one got the feeling he played his guts out with no concern of injury.

Don't take me too seriously NC.

Your right I would prefer harm towards those booing all night.

I want Adams in there soon. So we can see whether he's an answer at AFL level.

I suspect that the answer might be Kentfield but not until next year at the earliest. But he will have a great teacher.

He did an interview with the Deebrief and I thought he was good on there, talked more like a footy fan than a commentator. But his bias was massively showing all game, from trying to get Melk suspended, to shrugging off Allen's punch to Viney's scone, to Waterman dropping his knees and absolutely no mention of it. He was also always making points about cheap shots from Melbourne players but ignoring the ones from West Coast players.

That interview was horrendous. Absolute tool.

They also didn’t mention at all how petty got into the contest.

I really like how strong goody is being on his position of this. He normally plays a very straight bat, but he’s standing up for players (Melk and petty) as opposed to shying away from a contentious conversation with HQ. Something the strong clubs do.

I mentioned the same last night. I didn’t realise however that Petty was concussed as a result.

I also love that finally Goody was strong in his opinion and assertive in the presser that Melk was contesting the ball.

I think Ginby is the one in trouble and is likely to get 3 weeks for the concussion caused on Petty.

3 in a row feels awesome. Though, tactically it was a strange game.

The first half felt very '21, heaps of supply but no forward half connection.

But after Petty went down, we completely shifted our personnel around with Goody remarking that we moved Turner, Langford, Chandler and Riv to all new positions.

After that, we really able to control the ball and launch from d50 to score. We look so much better chaining out of half back and it brings our best players into the game.

Got the 4 points in a very hostile environment where we were at risk of losing all momentum. Bring on the Hawks.

Adams has come on this year in the absence of Tomlinson as well.

If Melk gets banned for that, the AFL should take up running a croquet competition.

Players are always pushing opponents out of the way so they can take a mark. If the do it with hands in the back, or too early before the ball arrives it is a free. I was suprised the ump thought it was a free rather than a mark (but little suprises me these days as inconsistency had reached stratospheric levels).

It is common for the opponent bumped out of the way to then contact another player (of either team). And unfortunately and inevitably, once in a while that contact will result in injury. There is no way you can say the player was being reckless with the oppos' safety. If the intent of the bump is to get the ball that should be the end of the discussion. If the player actually gets the ball, then case closed. Either that or AFL croquet.

Didn't watch a second of the game as i was at a functional but was checking for updates. Seems we were challenges and rose to the occasion.. well done.

Will watch the full replay today.

I see Langford had another 20 plus possessions.. he would have to be right in the mix for the rising star now?

Max looks like he had a monster of a game as did Chandler?

To be making long term judgement calls on Kolt right now is far too premature

He's obviously learning on the job and is only a 19yo

Right now, he continues to get to a lot of contests and given time (at least until the end of 2026) he should get up with the speed of the game (playing him as a small forward at a lower level might hinder his game, not enhance it ... he's that sort of player)

But 14 possessions as a small forward last night was actually a very good return for such an inexperienced player

Patience is required much as it is with most teenagers. If he had no presence or was invisible, that's a different story

But again, he is quite noticeable when the ball is in his area. He's got plenty of 'go' in him and doesn't take short steps or backwards steps

I compare him to Chandler. For a long time Kade wasn't impacting at all but we stuck with him and now he is a bona-fide AFL player who is starting to be a real standout

Kolt is still just a kid trying to make his way in a very tough sport

You know your having a night out when the spuds that are the WA commentary team say your "BOG by a long way".

Viva la Max!

I thought the “ spuds from WA” were excellent, fair commentators

Further to the Kolt discussion ... playing as a small forward alone can be tough going (they don't call it starvation corner for nothing)

So if he finds his way back at Casey he should be played as a frontline midfielder

But as it stands, if we get the chance to give Kolt some midfield minutes in the seniors, we should do so ... get him into the play

It would be so Michael Christian for him to give Melk a one weeks suspension, I have no faith in him making the right call.

If Melksham get a week for using his body, then how many does the WCE player get for pushing Petty in the contest and causing the concussions??

If he wasn't a high draft pick, you wouldn't be saying that. What do you actually see? I don't expect consistency, but I want to see a glimpse. He has no football speed and awareness is very poor. Dropped 2 absolute sitters,

I think u r far too hard on him. Pretty much missed preseason

Is it possible that Max could end up with The Medal?

Paying $101 for the Brownlow which is bizarre when he could have 9 votes in the last 3 weeks!

sparrow has gotta be the most frustrating footballler

gotta bring jvr back and aj too. 1 key forward doesnt cut it imo.

alternitively drop sparrow and petty out for concussion and bring in jed adams and roo(disco swings forward)

melksham is crucial for our inside 50 delivery and spargo just isnt it. lindsay might need a run in the vfl and mcvee is out of form. at the surface we are lacking composure (cough cough 22)

this season is reminding me of brisbane last year

all we need is to get another tall in

I must say, I think May is near the end.

He's always panicked with frontal pressure and he's never been a good user, but he no longer really wins contests either.

It might be a big call, but I think if we're to get better this year, May will find himself on the fringe of the 22 by the end of 25.

I think it’s time for Maysie to get on the Tom McDonald diet and lifestyle if he wants to get another couple of years at the top.

I legitimately entertained putting Pies vs Cats on. It’s hard to recall a worse game as a spectacle than that first half.

You obviously didn’t watch the Saints/Dockers match.

Yep, career-high disposals from our incredible captain.

But you’ll also get a real kick watching Langford negotiate traffic on the member’s wing. Kid is a star

(skip the second quarter)

Another rev-up at half time?

Again, we played really well in the 3rd quarter and that sort of footy we displayed in that quarter would worry most teams

So we are quite capable and that gives us hope. 6 goals in the last quarter was pleasing as well as we ran out the game well

First half? We need to get way better but at least we know we can bring it (if we're switched on)

Manic hunger from the get-go is required if we're going to go on a run (as the opposition gets much stronger from last night)

Bring on the Hawks!

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
