It was 34 secs from mark being paid to being told to play on. Just double checked on kayo

Fair enough didn't feel like it live watching on tv. Surely the umpire gave a warning as they usually do a few seconds before calling play on?

He is dreadful...but so iare most of the other so called expert commentators.

They just barrack, pump players up and drag teams down and tell us what we already know.

How about some insight into thregame.

Zac Merret is a star.

I didn't know that.

Thanks Kingy that was great insight mate.

What the hell was the decision made by the official into the ear piece of the umpire by the way?

Yeah that ear piece thing was baffling.

From my interpretation he awarded north a free late, a north player kicked a point before the late whistle, the essendon players argued that north took the advantage so the point should stand instead of a free kick 10m out from goal, so the ump said I'll just ball it up

He definitely didn't spend 30 secs at the top of his run up. He's a rookie who hasn't played much footy so no doubt he'll learn, but he was very slow to get set to kick

I know Kane's given his thoughts but surely nth & clarkson have to come under more heat. It's not like they're short of talent.

We were terrible back in the day we don't talk about & I know we got thrashings but we were young.

Nth have experienced players, a lot of young players & a forward line with darling, LDU and Larky

That was clear as day... the AFL stepping in to insure Essendon win...

After watching that I really have to wonder how we not just lost, but got thumped by both of those teams.

Quite sobering

apparently the down field ump paid a free to essendon at the same time. so if 2 umps award constrasting frees at the same time its a ball up. who knew!

Were there two frees?

I watched the last 10 minutes on 7 and saw that chsnge in decision - couldn't believe the commentators got that so wrong, particularly cornes who was up in arms about something he got 180 degrees wrong. So much for expert comments.

A split second after play had stopped a roos player booted the ball into the stands. A free kick should have been paid against him for time wasting.

The umpire clearly thought it was a bombers player who kicked the ball and so was going to give the roos a free kick.

Bomber's players immediately started yelling at him that a roos player kicked it.

Someone told the umpire the call was wrong Technically the free should have been reversed, but instead he changed the decision to a ball up - which was the prudent call.

Good use of technology and good umpiring- not that viewers would know that based on cornes ridiculous, wrong comments (his reflexive instinct to be 'controversial' and editorialise is annoying at the best of times but just flat out stupid in the context of calling games)

Wasn't there a free to North before or on blowing the whistle. I can see (but don't agree with) the 'advantage' logic but why a 'time wasting' free against?

Still trying to understand the bs re Maley called to play on. Wasn't wasting time nor used up his time... imho.

The umpiring is atrocious currently

His time expired. 34 seconds

I agree. Having forked out to get a Kayo sub, I'm watching a lot more games where I don't really care much who wins. So my usual biases are not in play. I find the umpiring is truly a mess. And not just due to the competence or otherwise of the blokes in pastel shades. The AFL needs a thorough review of the rules and how umpires are instructed to rule. Won't happen.

Because it's an infringement to kick or hit the ball into the stands after a whistle had stopped play.

Melk got pinged fir it in 2021.

That was a game that should’ve been hidden and not talked about, ever.

Commentary is hitting a new low. There doesn’t appear to be anybody in the booth that knows any of the rules.

There was always somebody in the commentary box with no idea, but usually they would be corrected by somebody.

Now there is not one single person with any idea whatsoever. On either channel!

I can’t believe we lost to North and Essendon. They are both so ordinary. Last nights game made me realise how much work lies ahead, not just in player management and trading/drafting but in getting the best out of the players who will be here not only this year and next but the next 5 and 10 years. Our list has holes but if we can fill them over the next 1-3 years we should stay in the hunt.

tbh i don't wonder at all

evidence points to the fact that we're not very good

Glad our game is at the same time as Pies/Cats so we don't have to put up with all the Jack Crisp celebrations (unless of course you're happy that he's broken Jimmy's record which is your prerogative).

Interesting that McCrae basically admitted the other day that Crisp had COVID in 2021 or 2022 and had no business playing a game which obviously would've halted the sequence.

Prefer a rock solid bloke like a Bontempelli breaking his record.

Interesting to hear that about crisp having covid. I mean back then it was still a massive thing & I mean look at what connor mckenna had to deal with when he had it.

Gill did a presser & halted the round.

It would be disappointing to hear he played with covid for selfish reasons

So Chris Scott said today he wasn't aware Geelong released an injury list.

How long has he been coach?

Seriously? Is he just taking the mickey now

Records are there to be broken. It's a huge effort and should be roundly applauded. he's a good player and his record will be broken eventually.

I hope Freo win so Ross Lyon keeps fuming. And it would be funny to me if Saints are no better under him than Ratten.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
