A cool and overcast day and I’m one of four spectators. The boys came out early today so maybe more people will turn up.

But more importantly, Melky is right for this weekend’s match. Yay! I asked him how on earth he copped such a deep gash… he said he landed awkwardly and it was his own boot stud that did the damage.

Spoke with Clarrie aka he who couldn’t tell a lie if his life depended on it. Private convo but please believe me when I say (again) if he leaves us, it won’t be his choice, ie. he’s a Demon and wants to remain a Demon, forever.

Richo said he knows Melk is my fave player but wanted to know who my favourite youngster is. I said it’s like picking my favourite child but if I hadda name one it’d be ā€œHarves, The Bison.ā€ Richo said he’s heard ā€œThe Bisonā€ being mentioned and wanted to know where it came from. I told him it comes from DL, he likes it and promised to spread it. So, @Supreme_Demon… it looks like it’s a thing 🄳

Goody said he really appreciates supporters having faith in him all along. I thought duuuuude, you clearly DON’T read Demonland 🤣

Got a feeling TC might get a gig this week. Maybe I’m reading into things a little too much and/or maybe it’s coz that’s what I hope happens, but he spent a lot of time with the coaches today and the vibe was different.

Halfway to the bye and a trip to Perth is about a good a time as any to rest Gawn.

Are they just training now?

Nah, they came out at 1:40-ish and wrapped it up at 2:15. A lot of handballing drills and set shot practice.

Further to Ghosty's notes:

Absent today: May, Lever, Spargo, Pickett and Kentfield

Marty Hore continued his rehabbing with a physio.

The dreaded soccer ball was out - the boys love it. Petracca and Sestan gave it a miss and had a kick with Marty.

AJ was last off the field and was having some goal-kicking tuition with Chocco.

He needs it.

25 metres out and he kicks the cover off the ball for a behind. Rinse and repeat at Casey last game for 2:5

Any idea why Kentfield wasn't there? And is it correct that he has been showing quite a bit of promise as a key defender? I'd he back to his pre-illness size?

3 goals 4 behinds actually.

I watched the whole VFL game on the weekend and I thought he looked very solid as a key defender.

There's definitely something to work with. Atm Jed Adams is ahead of him, but that is expected given he's a bit older and hasn't had the same health issues recently.

Pure speculation - but Casey have a bye this weekend - we play in Perth, and he is from WA, so maybe time to see family? Yes, Lukar is looking quite comfortable off half-back. Needs game time and an uninterrupted pre-season to be able to put his best foot forward. I don't have any official measurements pre and post his illness - Ghosty?

Luker wasn’t there today but he is remarkably close to his pre-illness condition, I’d even go so far as to say he’ll be even fitter and more toned. He’s in a really good headspace, too.

He’s actually already looking very close to how he looked when he first came back. At that time he looked dreadful; he’d lost all his muscle tone and a ton of weight, his face was gaunt and he looked terribly weak. He was literally unrecognisable. He came over to say hello and I wondered who this guy was and why he greeted me with such familiarity. The moustache was the only giveaway. The poor thing looked like death warmed up.

Hope so - we are desperate to find our next KPD.

If our kids develop quickly we could have a shot at another flag around 2027 but we'll need a May replacement by then.

I watched that game on tv , and to be fair, it was a windy morning.

thanks for the training reports . I love reading them and my mind goes back to Herald Sun training reports that just said.

Melbourne

X person 3 weeks

Y person 6 weeks

And that’s all footy starved supporters got.

TC is Tom Campbell.

Good to hear that Kentfield is showing promise.

I have high hopes for him.

Intercept marking improving.

Very slow to assess & react in terms of moving the ball on. He'll need to get up to speed with the modern game style or maybe he is but lacking confidence in his ball skills by foot. Maybe a bit of both?

Either way he has a bit of work to do me thinks.

Wonderful news!

Alan Richardson actually used to coach my local football club many, many years ago! šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘šŸ»

@Ghostwriter ditto that re Clarry! I did have a bit of a chuckle re ā€œhe who couldn’t tell a lie if his life depended on itā€ā€”only because with all the speculation about him in previous years, it’s funny to think all you’d have to do is ask him.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeatĀ  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
