5 day break was always going to be a factor. Reflect on that before criticising the last 10 too much

Richmond had a shorter break and were full of running

Top 5 worst games of AFL footy I’ve ever seen. From a Dees perspective, we’re very very ordinary of course, but without the best ruckman the game’s ever seen, I think we might be the worst team in the league. At the moment. Things can improve no doubt. And they will. Hopefully. 71,000 at the G, and they all should feel robbed.

If my grandma had wheels, she’d be a bicycle.

Enjoy the win.

You praised him last week.

The revisionist stuff gets old here

Gee we have a knack of picking up tall forwards who have no physical presence whatsoever. Fullerton, Schache, Weideman to name a few.

Nice boys

How'd that go for them in the 3rd? Who GAF about clawing some token goals back when the game is dead and buried?

That's because they took the third quarter off

Bowser was huge tonight.

Gawn is the best ruck I’ve ever seen and tbh quite possibly the best Dee I’ve seen.

Viney was a beast, 15 tackles.

Windsor needs to burn this boots, kid butchered it more tonight than he did all last year I reckon.

3qtr was elite and what we should be aspiring for each and every qtr.

Arrogant coaching by Goodwin for taking Gawn off.

Awful finish and now only few positives to come out after what was heading towards a really strong win.

Meh.

2017 ... who missed finals by %? It wasnt West Coast.

We need quite a few 10 goal wins, if finals are still on our radar.

Coming off a short break, and the highest pressure rating in a third quarter this season, I can tolerate a last quarter drop-off on this particular occasion. Obviously it won’t go unnoticed, and our last quarters will remain a focus as we press on.

But geez, some of you really need to learn to enjoy a win.

Why should Gawn being off the ground result in the our players slacking off their efforts?

Also what has Gawn sitting on the bench to do with some pathetic Melbourne turnovers hitting Richmond players on the chest?

This is the thing, no issue with resting Max but the rest of the team has to keep competing when he’s off the ground and we just stopped running and handed them goals. Should’ve at least shut the game down.

Who were all those posters who wrote off Salem?

He is so important to our back 6 and controlled the game tonight

If he got those floating chip kicks out of his game he would be even better.

I got the feeling that opposition just a little better than Richmond would have found us out tonight.

The most pleasing part was the response after half time, we flexed. I know some will criticise the last 15 mins where the Tigers jagged a few. It was NBA like, player management ( Gawn, May). The game was done and dusted.

Worry about percentage later, bank wins. Bowey unreal.

Huge game next week.

Has to be in the conversation for best Melbourne player ever. Definitely the best in my Millenial lifetime.

My partner asked me tonight what Melbourne would do when Gawn finishes up. I changed the topic - honestly I can’t and don’t want to ponder that.

You can only beat what’s in front of you. We’ll see if the hypotheticals play out in due course.

you one of those glass half full fellas yeah?

Secured the game then eased off mentally. who cares?

I reckon this kind of attitude represents exactly why we are 2-5.

Easing off mentally leads to bad habits and I guess we can expect more mediocre performances then.

Meh.

I wouldn't say it's arrogance. We were 40 points up coming off on a 5 day break with a trip to Perth.

We got to cute with our kicks and gave up easy goals.

Great win. 3rd quarter epic. Boys took their foot off the pedal in the last. It was obvious. Junk time goals for Richmond. Teams have done it to us in the past and we’ve called it out. Shouldn’t be any different when we’re in the lead. Go Dees.

Here's the issue though (and I'm someone who always rated Salem): why do we get such up and down performances from him? At his age and experience level we should be getting consistently decent output. But we get good games mixed in with shockers. Much like we've gotten from the majority of similarly experienced MFC players over the years.

The coaches must be so frustrated. So many of our senior players seem to perform like rookies. You expect and work around the inconsistency of youth...but if you can't rely on your senior players executing their role consistently then what hope do you have?

Richmond also of a 5 day break

Yes and Clarry's pressure and contested possesions was the HIGHEST of any player in that quarter for the season!

This is the cheapest trick on Demonland to cherry pick the first good game someone plays in god knows how long and call out the haters for doubting them.

Agree that hr played a good game but wind it in a bit!

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
