And the search for a decent KPF goes on....

  • 32 years since the debut of Neitz

  • 7 years since trading out Hogan

  • 2 days since the demise of JVR

Potential option for the future, Archie Ludowyke. Kicked 3 goals against Richmond VFL on the weekend in a rep game from limited opportunity.

As mentioned by @Chelly5 months ago, most likely a top 10 draft pick this year. How are we going to secure a top 10 draft pick for this kid?

I think that is pretty obvious. It will come from one or more of Trac/Clarry/Kozzy. KPF from the draft are so hard to get right though.

Its hard to snare them from clubs unless they enter into FA at a club not doing well. And then you are competing with the rest of the competition.

Tempting, but I dunno.

I'd much rather continue stockpiling 177cm small forwards who have less than 10 touches a game and don't kick goals every week.

We will have at least 2 first rounders in the 25 draft. Access to young talent won’t be our problem.

Pickett + another?

Yep. At this stage anyway.

He’s a good youngster with footy smarts. Definitely be top 15-20 pick. But unless we trade in, our first pick is likely to be around 25-30.

Talk about pressure on XL to perform..

Everytime someone says we traded our first pick I respond like you - we will have multiple FRP

To be fair, our club has collectively sabotaged JVR’s development. I think he is innocent in this case.

5 games into his third season and he has effectively taken only 1 contested mark so far this season. That is a massive concern for a KPF.

Sure the delivery to him has been poor overall but there have been enough entries inside 50 (249 in total) to work with.

He needs to go back to Casey and work on his marking and regain his confidence

I’d be sending the midfield and Nathan Jones back first.

Two years ago we had two many key talls, now it seems everyone wants to fill the list with more. I’d be looking at a ruck and a key defender (although white is likely to fill one of these roles) given our list profile. May and Gawn will leave gaping holes if they decline as they well should at their ages. Replacing them should be higher priority than bemoaning first rounders who haven’t come on and filling the list with more. A coach who teaches forward craft to these kids would serve us far better. JVR and Jefferson are not spent. Personally I’ll be satisfied if we don’t mortgage our future any further. Pick up white and sinnema and hopefully snag a late ruck prospect, Jason Taylor has had far less opportunities to influence the back end of the draft in recent years.

I think the bigger concern is how we've f... his development.

A kid who probably should have been back at Casey to get some confidence is expected to carry a dysfunctional forward line as the only KPF on the weekend.

That's just not right.

When you look at the lists of other clubs, they have 6 or7 players 200cm or more, and the better clubs have 4 or more in the actual first team. Most take years to develop and our only 2 (Gawn and Campbell) will probably not play beyond 2 years. Fullarton and Verall are close to 200 but neither show much sign of making it at the moment. It will probably take 4 years to get the 6 or 7 200cm players, so the damage on recruiting smalls is already done. We used to say we had a lot of talls but they were all only 195cm or thereabouts apart from a couple of ex basketballers that didn't work out as Category B rookies.

I don't want him to leave but the player with the most draft currency is Kozzie.

The club shouldn't entertain nothing less than a top 10 pick and another pick inside the first or early 2nd rounder inside pick 25.

If that can't be achieved a player of our choice i.e Luke Jackson.

Clubs will not give us quality draft picks for Claz and Trac if they are taking on their salary.

Or how about a 4th backup ruckman for Gawn, just in case Max can no longer jump or run...

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
