Hows about this for an idea. I know it wont work but end of the day its a way to create pressure without having crowds involved.

Every player contributes a % of their match payment every week so that we end up with a pool of about $10K a week (from 40 odd players it works out to be $50 for low earners up to about 300-400 for the higher earner). Host a goal kicking competition for the entire squad down at Casey. Have fun with the format. But the important this is the squad (and staff)can do just about anything to put off the kicking player falling short of physical abuse.

$5K goes to the end of year tally, $3K to the weekly winner, 1.5K to 2nd place and $500 for 3rd.

It's about a $100K pool at end of year. Distribute earnings for top 5. Could even get a sponsor to cover (but obviously need to consider Salary cap).

Great idea. Specsavers would surely tip in as sponsors for such an initiative.

Absolutely one of the things in my manifesto!

Did you get to practice Picket \? I really feel there are some good suggestions here and if you were not gilding the lilly you should be able to get some real traction with the boys. I have seen how passionate you have been over the years and would be great to see the club embrace some DLand love.

Does anyone at the club really really care …. enough to get off their backsides, stop talking platitudes, and DO SOMETHING!!!

It WILL cost memberships in coming years if nobody acts. 100% certain.

  1. Stop spinning the ball in hands as part of your set shop run up.

  2. Shorten your run up.

It is quite unbelievable that professional footballers cannot kick straight

Don’t rely on AFL coaches to teach you how to kick. If you don’t have the technique by 16yo or so you’ll struggle forever.

Compared to some pro and amateur golfer practice putting routines the lack of systematic practice (going off our soccer training reports) is astonishing

Whoever thought of those targets in the cheer squad is a genius. But they now don't seem to work.

Can I suggest a giant picture of Maynard's mug to aim for.

You wouldn’t be able to stop May Oliver and Petracca running to the mug to give him a hug, a kiss and a lick.

I’ll not forget those scenes

Max spoke about his goal kicking the other week on mmm & said his focus is more on his contested marking & kicking goals isn't the biggest focus.

He did say if he had the shot to win the game or if it was up to him to get his team ahead in a GF he'd obviously put a bit more focus on it.

I just think sometimes max needs to do better with his kicking not only for goal but in the field to. He's been in the game long enough now to be better.

We saw what he did in 21, so we know he can do it

That is an utter indictment on the captain of true

I am sure the spinning of the ball is to do with some advice he must have got about not tightening up and clutching at the ball that would affect the ball drop. So it makes some sense. So the ball drop might be ok but the rest of his action is flawed. The long run up, the late shuffle to the right, the kicking leg comes across the body and does he lean back on the kick, not following through properly? It looks like it and he nearly always fades it to the left, like a left handed golfer with a slice swing.

Golfers have swing coaches who know their swing and are employed to detect flaws, if there are any but importantly to flag any changes. We need someone similar at the club, desperately.

Mate thanks but they would get me down listen politely, then thank me for input before throwing me to those I have bagged over the duration! Hell the slitheras would have to rescue me from certain lynching!

ABSOLUTELY!😬

Max should look at Draper's routine from Essendon. It would work for him far better than what he does currently. Explore different techniques and find a something that works for each individual.

I learnt to drop the ball in under 12's with a great coach who made every one of us kick further and get our ball drops right. For the ball drop we were dropping the balls into buckets, perfect for drop punts. Then for kicking further we had a line where we would kick the ball from and another one half a metre or so further past that. It taught us to jump through that line and we all improved both distance and accuracy. Drives me crazy most of our players do not get their ball drop right, or kick actually through the ball. It is pretty basic stuff that would make many of them far better field kicks and also kicking for goal. Too many lean back and the ball goes anywhere.

OMG that is just so unprofessional.

He should approach shots at goal as vital every time. If he has the first shot at goal in a game and thinks it doesn’t matter and we lose by 4 points it is just as important as the last shot. I really cannot believe that our leader has this attitude. Explains a lot about our team and our club, if true.

Please don’t ever say Gawn is unprofessional, he’s a poor kick for goal but god he does a hell of a lot well. The best ruckman of his generation and one who clearly gets his preparation and recovery spot on

Maybe shift the target 2m to the right of the right goal post? Problem solved.

Plenty of good ideas here with one central point we need to have a reliable routine and practice it. It would warm my heart if the coaches came out and said the same thing and implemented something, anything!

It was interesting to hear Jeff White talk about the training hours in the podcast this week.

I believe the AFLPA have managed to get restrictions on coached hours etc with the club, so maybe they just don't have the time to do this type of training on top of everything else?

If that is the case it is a bit of an indictment on the AFLPA, the average worker does 8 hours a day...

The goalkicking is pox, but other than Pickett we also lack players who can pluck goals out of thin air, and I'd be surprised if we weren't in the bottom few sides for set shots from within 15 metres.

Edit - I usually don't take expected score seriously, but this has our set shots as the four easiest in the competition so there (seemingly) goes that theory.

I think that's fourth hardest.

Williams is stealing a living at the moment. Our kicking across the board is diabolical and I'm not sure his taped up footys are doing the biz.

I heard a few remedies from a noted goal kicker (and a great one at that) on how to improve the Dees' goalkicking. Rather

'on the mark' in my opinion, just a couple of suggestions given and certainly, a possibility to take on a more influential role with our team to coach and improve the devastating errors we currently contribute. This guy was an amazing forward, kick 'em from almost anywhere, great gatherer of the ball and a reliable mark...ex-Don, know who I mean?

The average worker doesn't work on weekends or Thursday or Friday nights, or public holidays.

They also don't get paid $700k-$1m a year

I actually took my youngest to a kicking clinic last night run by Phiv Demetriou. He's worked with lots of AFL players over the years and has an impressive CV of helping young AND old players improve their kicking. His approach was simple and effective. The thing he kept saying though, was that it wasn't enough to have a good technique - you have to practice it.

It seems, from the outside, that enough players think that their kicking is good enough - hence no improvement. Nathan Jones definitely got better through his career, which probably reflects his work ethic and understanding of the need to get better, as well as a desire to get the best out of himself. Do our players share this desire? It doesn't seem like it.

Devil’s advocate because I broadly agree with the sentiment:

I tend to give these players a lot more leeway given that normal workers also don’t put their body through what these guys do every week.

If someone offered me 700k a year before tax for 5-10 years and then they told me there was a decent chance I’d have lasting mobility issues and potentially even lifelong brain damage, I’m not so sure I’d take that job.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
