Now we have King, surely we get the Geelong rate in trades?

When we gave the contract to Clarrie, he was widely considered to be the premier midfielder in the competition, had won 2AFLCA awards, numerous best and fairest at Melbourne, and generally the contract was applauded. I just think it's terrible that we are now trying to get rid of him when he looked to me to be on his way back after a rough couple of years. I, for one, will be absolutely devastated to see him go.

The issue with long term contracts is the unknowable. they are a leap of faith and this situation proves it. we have to eat a chunk of his wages now to move him on

We gave Gus a long term contract when he had known concussion issues

Our list management decisions have been poor.

Yeah well with Clarry gone, my favourite player since Rob Flower, my membership is finished.. Period! At least Demonland won't have to put up with me either!

Pathetic

I applaud the club and new regime for their honesty, clearly we all seen the Goodwin and his favourites mantra and now many of those same boys club are feeling the heat as they arent comfy anymore. This is the circuit breaker we needed, as Goodwin couldn't deliver it, don't get me wrong, it would be hard to part with the crew that brought the ultimate success but you just have to break it all down with a clear mind.

May is well and truly cooked, he can barely bend over and he isn't getting back to his best. Also, it is pretty obvious for all the good he brought, that he is toxic and a troublemaker off the field, this isn't good for our culture.

Petracca is a shell of his former self, it seems to be a bit of all about Christian, perhaps a taste of business success outside of footy has brought this on. 30yo, pulling out of contests and how could anyone forgive him for his dragging the club through mud last year as well. I also don't think he lived up to his own expectations and standards this year, was surprised he finished R/U in the BnF.

Oliver. hasn't been himself on or off field for years, thought his last game was great, but he is a headache for the club in more ways than one & I won't go into it further.

Spargo - meh, 25 games in 3yrs? Doesn't get enough of it as a mid, doesn't kick enough goals as a forward, no mans land.

McVee I think stitched the club over with not being honest from the get-go, he was going back to WA over a year ago I'm told.

Bring on the fresh start and clean out of people who don't want to get their hands dirty and lift the club up. Hawks survived without Franklin, then Hodge and Lewis. All will be OK in the end, patience will be required. 2021 was 4yrs ago, stop referring to it, we aren't that team anymore, cherish it by all means but we need to move forward as a club before we do actually implode.

It's basically pick 10-11.

We won't get Humphrey.

Andrew Downer over here...

We won't get him with that attitude!

Just out of interest, can anyone recall a player openly nominating a club and then not getting there?

CP in 2024 choosing Collingwood. I'm only half-joking. Ivan Soldo, I believe?

Now that Trac has chose Suns publicly, there are several forces at play to make it happen, namely

  • AFL want Trac at GCS so as to help GCS to rapidly grow profile and rivalry with Lions, have cash to offset our having to pay his salary (ambassador deal, advertising, etc...) Brand Petracca will help grow the GCS profile both on and off the field.

  • AFL want GCS success on field asap, Trac helps this for next 2-4 years.

  • Suns are looking to establish themselves as "destination club" and a club on the rise (Ablett Jnr leaving hurt this, Trac to Suns helps restore it).

  • Suns have abundance of kids and picks but need mature bodies now.

  • Demons need to rebalance midfield and move on from post-flag doldrums AND get fair compensation for letting a STAR of the game walk.

  • Demons need what Suns have, young guns with an established relationship with our new coach.

Dimma and others may want to play hard ball but the execs at both Suns and AFL will be saying do the deal even if it means Humphrey and Flanders to the Demons. As by spending big on Trac, Suns demonstrate they can catch a "big fish", that they are "serious" players, prepared to do whats required to win their first flag and build their place up North.

Contract fair enough at the time, but last 2 years you could make an argument he has not lived up to his end of the bargain, to many whispers/rumors surrounding his off field behavior, probably has come a time where the club decided they had to take a stand.

It's the hope that kills you...

King has already said that he sees Petracca as a central part of 2026. So we play hard ball. Humphrey must be part of any trade. If GC don't want to part with him, the deal falls over and CP is in a Melbourne jumper next year. That's the starting point of the negotiation. It's up to GC and CP5 to make that happen. Over to you Tim

Over to you Tim? Hardly encouraging.

Wrong again Tom, we won’t purely want draft picks. We will have players in mind, players that they can replace with talent through their academy. There may be an exchange of draft picks in any trade but we will want established talent as the key to any trade. Any deal has to be a head turner, clearly more eye candy on the Gold Coast than in Adelaide.

I hope we do one on Gold Coast who were given our zone in Darwin which was replaced by Alice Springs.

Something that I hope doesn't get lost in all of this is EAD Adelaide and your arrogant toothless supporters. Thought you'd snag him with a packet of crisps yeah?

If only he had bothered to listen to what our club has already laid down as the parameters of a deal.

Bella was never moving to bloody Adelaide. She's not 80 years old with a fetish for churches.

GCS are the perfect team to push for a good deal. They have no need for pick 7 as they have Academy priority picks which we can probably satisfy from our Spargo and McVee trades.

We need a player or a pick that we can trade for a player plus pick 7.

Very surprised Tracc is prepared to go to the Suns. He really is desperate to leave and the Suns are the only ones who can get it done. On the flip side he's not rated by the competition given no ones willingness to endure a risk (player trade etc) to get him.

A disappointing end but that's footy and business as usual at MFC

Nor should we, i feel like the suggestion we should or would came out of nowhere. I get it with Clayton. But Trac is still a gun

Must say, I will be disappointed if we lose both (5 and 13) players. Could handle one going.

But in the end both contracts were too high for just a little too long and perhaps (?).

Its happened at other clubs sometimes it works sometimes it does not.

I would like to keep Clarry, he obviously does not like reporters !

So he is probably not leaking.

Do you blame me lol

57 minutes ago, chookrat said:

I don't see how that matters. While our premiership players are legends the club had been clear about needing a new voice and King with starting with a clean slate. King had also been clear about Trac and Oliver being in his best 23 and the need for Oliver to develop his outside game which should be now suprise to us.

In previous years we lost JJ and Bedford due to inflexibility re Trac, Oliver and Viney, Brayshaw had to learn a different role after finishing 3rd in the Brownlow, and we risk losing Riv as well as limiting the development of Windsor, Langford, X, and Kolt if we keep doing the same thing.

JJ and Bedford were pushed / given [censored] offers re salary our cap being tight imo. At that stage the game was played differently and our bulls in the middle where the best in class. They also hadn't gone through their personal termoils that were to come.

The club fabric and culture that is passed down is heavily unfounded by the way the club treat players. Also because the other younger players are watching and saying to themselves at some point that could be me being pushed out even if l am a gun and game my all. I also said if Clarry does need to accept he needs to develop his game or yes he is out

Folks here suggesting Humphrey AND Flanders for Trac really need to hose themselves down.

Humphreys is worth more to us than Trac, and the Suns are fully aware of that. He’s also contracted to 2028, so it would need to be both Trac and a hefty figure.

Flanders is a possibility, but the Saints are gunning hard for him. If they have the reserves and the mettle to compete for a deal, things suddenly don’t seem as easy as we’d like them to be.

I’m still not convinced the path forward has presented itself, and the chances of a disillusioned Trac in our midfield next year are still very real.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
