Will always be a champion of this club. Publicly humiliating him reflects poorly on the club. It feels like we've sunk back to the days when we turfed Junior McDonald and other loyal senior players and destroyed the culture of the club for a a decade.

I couldn't be more disappointed with our club today. I'm excited that we'll have a completely new look on field next year, but really poor how the clubs been managed the last few years. Completely burnt our only successful period in decades. I'm expecting a bottom four finish next year and years of pain ahead when Tassie enter the league.

Before you express your disappointment in the club!

What are your off field expectations of a player you pay circa $1.3M per year?

The players are clearly leaking it. Clayton posted an instagram story, tagging Mitch Cleary, with Mitch reposting the story and saying thanks for the chat Clayton.

Player managers are the main culprits with leaking.

not liking the look of this, potentially May, Trac, Clarry and Mcvee all out in the same trade period, no players really tied to us (only kind of Mihocek now...), and a very compromised draft... what are we doing??

rebuild. love it

So if we take what the club said at face value. What role do they actually expect Oliver to play outside of the midfield?

Call me naive, but I don't get why we should pay a portion of a departing player's salary at the player's new club. Yes, I know we benefitted when we took Grundy, but if the new team is not willing to pay the whole contracted amount then they should STFU and the player should remain with us, unhappy or not. Casey could could use some drive out of the centre.

100%....

We need to look long term as well. its $3 mill a year for trac and oliver, they dont play like 3 mill a year duo...... we can rebuild on the run with that money as they have maybe 2-3 years of this level of footy left. Its a smart move to try and offload them as harsh as it is

Realistically how does a 7 win team fare after losing 4 of its best 22 (1 a young gun, 1 2nd in the BnF and 1 showing signs of getting back to lofty standards) in the same offseason, without replacing them with anything special and having limited draft capital. I will not begrudge King at all a bottom 4 finish next year, as that seems where we’re headed. All in for Dougie Cochrane!

McClure,

First of all, there’s no need to bring my hairline into this. I don’t take hair advice from anyone, let alone from someone who can’t even commit to being the ginger they clearly are.

And how am I feeling about the club today? I feel like we spent 12 months trying to see if certain players wanted to improve their attitude, and their output, to match their contracts. I think we all saw the results, and I back the club in to make professional decisions based on what I can see from the sidelines, and what they would know from inside the organisation.

And finally… get a fridge, fix your light fitting, and never presume to know how I’m feeling again.

I'm really upset by this, Clarry looks to have worked really hard, and started to get back some touch and form later in the season. Then only a couple of weeks ago committed to the Dees and getting stuck in for 2026.

I do wonder if....the club is quietly confident of landing Flanders, and they believe he will take Olivers spot in the midfield. It's just hard to get my head around losing Trac and Clarry!

The last bit is the most telling. You don't talk about players exploring their options if that's not a big possibility.

i dare say hff like he did when resting during 2021. But its probably more at play here in that we are pushing him out.

May

Claz

Trac

All distruptors of the club at various stages for various reasons.

I dont think its a coincidence that we are clearing the decks of these types of players and rebuilding our culture from the ground up with a clean slate.

He did that AFTER all the leaks came out.

Clearly Cleary and him then had a chat.

You think Clarry or his manager is saying to the media the club thinks he's a VFL level footballer?

In short yes. They are again making it an untenable situation for Melbourne. Its a simple strategy. Leaking we are willing to part with 700K, and all of that creates a market expectation and a norm. We then have to satisfy that because the alternative in Clarry staying is untenable.

Im afraid the player managers are having their way with us. Ultimately we will lose on the Clarry fiasco and lose big time. At some point in time we just have to bite the bullet. Im devastaed that it has come to this.

We are now into the abyss of full rebuild from which it will be difficult to determine whether we will ever emerge again in the following decade. I sure hope those in the clubs board room and coaching department know what they are doing. I cannot do another lifetime without success.

I don’t know about anyone else but I actually love this approach.

Goodwin spent years playing players purely for the fact he loved them. Was afraid to hurt their feelings or they’d ’want out’

Kings comes in and said I can’t guarantee you midfield time to both Clarry and Trac which we’ve all said we needed change in BUT if this doesn’t suit your needs then please, help yourself to looking at other clubs and if you find that you can work with us in this new version of us trying new things then you’re more than welcome to stay.

The players have no say anymore and if ANY player isn’t happy with playing multiple roles then it won’t work at our club.

Danger plays forward AND midfield

Holmes also plays midfield AND half back

Tom Atkins job is a super defensive midfielder/Tagger.

They’re happy to switch the magnets and the players are happy to move around.

I absolutely agree the club is pushing him out. Just playing devil's advocate. I really don't know what other role Oliver could excel at.

We must have some good mids on the hook in the trade period to be pushing Clarry out and seeing Trac off.

Or, again, Bailey Laurie's voodoo doll has been working overtime.

Correct me if I am wrong, did Guerra not say in a radio interview that Petracca and Oliver were both listed as best 22 players in Steven King's coaching presentation?

The last week would suggest otherwise. So who is talking rubbish? King in his coaching presentation, or Guerra in his radio interview?

It's all about trade value. Say....

Full contract = Nothing in return

$300k each year = Second round pick

$700k = Two good picks

A heated discussion huh?

Does this look like a post that comes from an angry player who’s just been told to look for a new club?…

Claz must’ve posted this lighthearted, humorous post after he “stormed out of the meeting.”

Holy father in heaven, give me strength. 🙄

Because the club wants him out, I suspect. Is this as more a cultural rebuild as opposed to some game style change that can’t accommodate a May, Oliver and (to a lesser extent) Petracca?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
