McCrae had Daicos into the midfield. We have …?

Yes, we don't have Nick Daicos, but I would argue that our young talent is a hell of a lot more promising than Collingwood's in 2022 (Bar Daicos)

We also have a player in Harvey Langford who could definitely be joining Nick in the top 5 players in the comp for the next 10 years

Put to one side whether you think moving on from Clarry is a good idea.

Is this the right way to do it? Tell him 2 business days prior to trade period to find a new home? Let it leak? Destroy bargaining power? All the while remembering that he’s under a sizeable contract that can’t be ripped up - meaning the only outcome now is for us to trade him for a packet of chips whilst we pay him 30-50% of his salary?

Be supportive of the new management all you want, but we are still, right now a mess.

If there's any truth to Clarry going, we've absolutely [censored] the bed, both with the May decision, which leaked, and now the Clarry meeting. Leaks all over the joint and debasing whatever currency we might have with either player.

Clarry's year by averages:

Disposals: 25.5 (above afl average)

Kicks: 10.8 (above afl average)

Handballs: 14.7 (elite according to afl metric)

marks: 2.9 (below afl average)

tackles: 5.4 (well above afl average)

clearance: 5.5 (well above afl average)

I know that these stats in a vacuum are not entirely indicative but assertions that clayton isnt giving us any output or doesnt have value are just ridiculous.

You can have as many smooth movers transitioning the ball fast on the outside, but you still need one or two guys to go and win a hard ball in and under. Winning the ball at contest is still what gives you the edge in big games and finals.

Letting clayton go would take the cake in diabolically bad MFC list decisions.

Hoping this is just media beat up.

If you think by looking at stats, you can somehow justify Oliver’s existence than you living a fantasy. He had a terrible year

We have offered to pay up to $700,000 of his salary for whoever takes him on if anyone.

Allegedly.

Not having a shot at you but it does my head in how in 2025 we collectively seem to have lost the ability to question the veracity of information that finds its way onto the internet, and even more concerningly seem to always rush to conclusions.

I mean whatever happened to just taking a beat until all the information comes out before assuming something is factual.

How do you know the players aren’t leaking it

They may well be

But who would leak negative stories about themselves?

Or what motive would they have to blow up the joint every few weeks?

The players are clearly leaking it. Clayton posted an instagram story, tagging Mitch Cleary, with Mitch reposting the story and saying thanks for the chat Clayton.

I worry Melbourne are doing that thing where you advertise a garage sale on a Saturday morning and people start ringing on Thursday with sob stories about why they cant make Saturday, so you let them come early and they then low ball everything and you take it because you worry it wont sell, then on Saturday realise you could have got way more...

Our Saturday was 2 years ago

He did that AFTER all the leaks came out.

Clearly Cleary and him then had a chat.

You think Clarry or his manager is saying to the media the club thinks he's a VFL level footballer?

You are assuming the club is leaking this info. It could well be the player or more likely his manager. If something is on sale you need to advertise!

List Manager Tim Lamb said it was a good opportunity to sit down with Oliver alongside new Senior Coach Steven King and outline the club’s plans.

“Today was a good chance to sit down with Clayton and share how Steven and the coaches see the game being played, and where the opportunities lie for him,” Lamb said.

“We were upfront with Clayton around the role he is likely to play next season and the need for him to develop his craft beyond the midfield to have his biggest impact within the team.

“It was honest and respectful, and Clayton is now clear on what we see his role being next year, and how we think he can best contribute.

“Clayton is contracted for another five years. If he wants to explore his options in the upcoming AFL Trade Period, we will respect that. Should he remain in the red and blue, we will of course continue to support and embrace him as part of our club.”

Develop his craft beyond the midfield - wonder what they're wanting from him from a positional POV

No good telling players these things in advance only for it to leak.

We need to go back to blindsiding people at the last minute ala Woewodin..

Could only imagine it being a bit of half forward, absolutely has the body for it

Tracc apparently up on the GC today, on another beautiful GC day.

The weather alone would be tempting him.

If Tracc is happy to go to GC we might have Crows and Cats looking at Clarry.

Also a Flanders deal and pick 6 could be on the table.

We will see if anything eventuates.

Standby for a couple of surprises if May, Tracc, Clarry and Judd are traded.

We will have some list spots that we don’t want to fill by the draft.

So Geelong possibly adding Worpel, Oliver, Curnow and Marshall to the list, not a bad off-season for them.

WAS a champion player

Will always be a champion of this club. Publicly humiliating him reflects poorly on the club. It feels like we've sunk back to the days when we turfed Junior McDonald and other loyal senior players and destroyed the culture of the club for a a decade.

I couldn't be more disappointed with our club today. I'm excited that we'll have a completely new look on field next year, but really poor how the clubs been managed the last few years. Completely burnt our only successful period in decades. I'm expecting a bottom four finish next year and years of pain ahead when Tassie enter the league.

Wow so our once midfield that went bang bang bang gone! Who’s going to replace Trac & Oliver??? What is their strategy as unless if ur replacing them with ready made talent we are finishing at the bottom!

Develop beyond the midfield ? Clayton cannot play anywhere but midfield. He was terrible in the backline, and as a forward is a shocking kick.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
