100%...

I've been saying this since 2021.

Stop with the talk.

Just walk the walk and let the footy do the talking.

But it seems almost every other week we are blurting out something that makes us a target and/or telling everyone we are gonna do this or we're working on that.

Shoosh up and just get on with it FCS.

Umm, doesn't every team/coach have to engage somewhat with the media? Every coach has to do their press conferences, at least after games. Regardless of how reluctant he is each coach has to front up to them. No one wants the equivalent of Chemical Ali as coach feeding the press BS about success while week after week they're playing like Melbourne just did. But I do like to hear what our coach thought of our games, especially when we lose and especially to see if there are hints that things will get better (and i suspect many other fans like this too).

Also every team needs publicity. There can be too much but if there's more engagement with the fans themn probably there's more ticket sales, club memberships and new fans. Anyway are we really 'talking more than other teams? Or is it just that Melbourne supporters mainly focus on ..... Melbourne? There needs to be a balance and while that  slip-up by Goody was silly I'm really not sure a little publicity per week vs hundreds of hours put in weekly by the whole club suggests they have the wrong focus (or they are any worse than other clubs with this.)

I don't bother with classified anymore. Not with McClure as host & never bothered with the one ed hosts.

I find now I record 360, on the couch & agenda setters & ff through the parts I'm not interested in.

I watch the bounce then a bit of first crack after

The coach no doubt has commitments but they certainly aren't giving away anything substantial or eye opening other than a bit of an injury update at the weekly and post match pressors GD

It's the same old boring stuff which I'm fine with.  But why give the reporters any unnecessary ammo to go on with?

Whether its the Coach or the players.  And we've had player issues before such as May & Lingers where things were said that should not have come out outside the four walls.

In house is a different matter.

I'm not saying we should go into a media lock down.  Just keep a super tight ship and don't give up much inside info / intel at all!

Even if it's a love fest inside the four walls.  The deep personal stuff should (in the main) remain in house imho.

There's just too much. Of course there's plenty of nonsense mixed in with what's worthwhile. Also so much stuff is irrelevant so bloody quickly I'm reminded of the saying about yesterday's papers being tomorrow's fish and chips wrappers.

i agree with most of that. Apart from the non-comment about Gawn's personal life what else shouldn't have been said recently? I'm happy to hear that the players had good morale over summer and that they had what they felt to be a wonderful camp at Bright. Maybe the love stuff was too much (and maybe moreso after tonight). But after last year's horror season it sounded encouraging to hear that and maybe increased membership sales. It's also interesting that I've heard fans also complain about Goody only providing boring info.

The hate on Tom Morris is rubbish even if he is a weasel.

He gets everything right. Everything. He only runs with a story when he has the facts (hello Sam Maclure) and we just don't like it because its about Melbourne.

Reality is, Melbourne have caused so many problems to be reported on and that is his job.

Don't forget, he does barrack for Melbourne even if he is reporting negative things about the club.

Yet there are journos supporting other clubs who will help bury stories about the club they support. I'm not sure which is worse.

@Redleg is a classic example of a Demonland poster who thinks the AFL world is out to get us. They are not, at least no more than any other club.

I didn't say "the media is out to get us ", nor do I think it.

I won't say that your post is a classic example of a DL misrepresentation of another's post, but rather that it was an incorrect conclusion.

What I said was that a fairly minor story was the main media event, while far more serious stories are often ignored.

Bigger clubs also have a way of avoiding bad publicity too.

I then referred to a media that doesn't want to get offside with their golden goose.

I disagree. Yes they do.

An incident may be mentioned once and then never heard again.

How many times was the Stengle incident mentioned?

How many times was the Cat’s players sexual assault issue mentioned?

How many times was the Luke Ryan incident mentioned?

There are driving accidents with parked cars that get one mention and never spoken of again.

There are numerous examples and I am not talking about names being suppressed possibly by Court orders, incidents can certainly be mentioned.

If you don’t think some clubs have an ability to limit bad media exposure, we can agree to disagree.

Who cares about the media. Win games of footy and they will quickly get off our back.

That’s the bottom line. If we continue lose badly, playing a gameplan that is boring and ineffectual we will be attacked

Win games with strong performances, the attack dogs will go somewhere else

There have definitely been times when I’ve seen stories of players for other clubs and thought to myself, ‘If Melbourne had done this, this would be continually mentioned for months after’

Problem is (IMO):

We kept on supplying the media with stories to focus on (correctly or not) which easily gave the media a narrative that we were a basket case over a number of years. So when the latest ‘story’ came out about us, no matter how big or small it actually was, it was added to the ever growing list of things the media could mention. And they would mention them all together to validate the ‘basket case’ title. On top of that, we started losing and missed finals which is extra incentive to ask ‘are all these off field issues affecting the players’. That isn’t a question you can ask if your club keeps winning.

I do take your point and I actually agree in some part, but, I feel like there’s some confirmation bias happening also? We see stories about us and take notice because we’re supporters, then we see stories from other clubs and might group 17 other clubs stories together, which isn’t an analogous comparison (IMO).

I could be wrong and I’m open to being convinced otherwise, but is there another club you could point to that has had the same amount of issues get out to the media, as frequently, as us since 21’?

Why did he/Goodwin mention it, who knows?

Maybe by making an excuse for the disappointing performance of the teams captain and driving force, by extension he is actually making an excuse for the teams performance overall.  Consequently he could be covertly trying to taking some pressure off himself for the poor performance.

I’m not saying it was definitely deliberate, possibly just a slip of the tongue.

Regardless, the whole thing was hardly newsworthy.

Perhaps he was reacting, some might say over-reacting, to last year's big story that the club didn't show Petracca enough love when it mattered.

You do realise there is a suppress order in play regarding this matter right? So yeah, it's not allowed to be mentioned amongst media and journalism.

Collingwood and Essendon have had their fair share of off field matters over the years. I said this the other day, Collingwoods dates back to the rat pack days and as recent as the DeGoey and Lumumba situation.. what more do you want? I can keep reeling off a list if you'd like?

This whole poor me mentality that we are the only club copping it in the media is simply cringe and a case of having your red and blue lenses on and nothing else and im not simply directing this at you only even though you're the OP.

You have missed my point.

My post is about the media concentrating on a minor matter, as though it was a murder, rather than other more serious or interesting matters, that are available to be spoken about.

People need to stop reading into posts what they think is being said, instead of what is actually being said.

It was not a "woe is me" post, it was a comment on the media, turning a small matter into WW3, hence the title "Media Madness".

I only twigged today about how perverse it is for certain people in the media to be having a go at Goodwin because his comment might be seen as exposing Gawn to certain people in the media having a go at him.

I actually heard a property develop once say that buyers were to blame for building defects because if they hadn't bought from the plan then the property developers wouldn't be able to get away with making off-contract variations so easily.

Give me this kind of footy analysis everyday of the week.

Hahahaha!!! The Coffee Cups behind Simmo. What a classic.

Goodwin [censored] up, as soon as I heard it I knew it was a red flag to the media who would obviously pursue it during the week.

It just came across as excuse making and a way to divert the attention away from him as coach. Good coaches take the heat for their players they don't burden them with more unwanted attention.

The footy media is a cesspool but as a club we certainly don't help ourselves. Stop giving them fuel! And stop watching, I don't watch any footy media anymore other than sometimes a bit of First Crack because it's on after my kids watch the Bounce. Never listen to SEN, I don't know how anyone can stand it. Plenty of other better things to watch/read/listen to that wasting time on these boofheads. If I want my footy fill I'll listen to our very own Demonland podcast, the Deebrief (sometimes) and Junktime for some comic relief.

The point of the thread was the prioritising of stories, not us being picked on.

Yes we have had a lot of issues lately, but most of our own making and deservedly so. When your two best players are possibly leaving, that is big news for example.

I feel like the Paul Roos and Neale Daniher days were probably the most stable we had been from an off field perspective, certainly in my time supporting the dees.

There were a lot of board issues during the Daniher years but the Rev did an incredible job in keeping the players united and not caught up in all the jargon.

The only behaviour issue I can think of was David Neitz getting a bouncer in a headlock  at Crown Casino?

Roosy was highly respected within media circles and obviously his reputation probably played a big part in that. Fair to say he also kept the players in line with his standards around culture and behaviours.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
