The luck was short lived.

On reflection I thought we did pretty well to still be in the game at thre quarter time. For 3 quarters we kept coming back which shouldn't be overlooked. The 6 goals in 7 minute burst has made everyone forget the effort put in for 3 quarters. We gifted goals from some awful turn overs, and on 2 occasions being to slow to kick and got run down. Its not Goody fault that Langdon kicks it over Claytons head to the opposition who goal or Bowser shanking a kick into the middle of the ground straight to 2 North players  nor is it his fault when Woewodin butchers a bounce in the middle of the ground when all our players are running forward. It happened last week and again Sunday when players over run the ball, miss handballs or have the tackle broken. Non of this is Goodwins fault and it rests entirely with the playing group who should own it.

Structurally we were too short. AJ was replaced by Spargo and when Jeffo busted his hand and is replaced by Woewodin we are too small. Small wonder Comben had 8 intercept marks, he was on a midget (not helped by not lowering our eyes when delivering the ball). It was error to expect Max to solely compete against Xerri . Last time they met he was out muscling Max and they had no plan B despite Campbell handling Xerri fairly well in the practice game.

Windsor covers a lot of cracks with his blinding speed as will Picket on return. Howes was all Australian under 18 as a wing/half forward. He is to slighlty built to hold down a key back post. Fritch & Disco aren't strong enough to hold down key posts and I doubt they ever will

The issue is our best 6 are very good but as stated by Adam Simpson our bottom 6 players  is where the issue lies. Injuries happen and last year the Pies struggled untill they got their best side together. May, Windsor, McVee, Picket and to a lesser extent Melksham will make a big difference. The have backup ruckman in AJ and Campbell use them

Windsor, Kolt, Lindsay & Langford are the class we need to develop but they are babies in the system but are part of the rebuild

This is very much on us then it is on the journalism side of things. When you air personal matters out as what Goodwin did then they'll come from all angles.

Sparrow’s career average for kicking efficiency is 59%, so I’m just saying it’s quite a bit down at present

Which is where he was played at Casey - with limited success. Which is why they've been trying to reinvent him as a defender.

Losing Jefferson created a big structural issue. While he may not have had a possession in the first quarter and may not have had a huge influence had he played out the game, he was occupying one of the 3 North tall defenders. When he went off, it meant Pink and Corr took care of Turner and JVR and Comben was left to play against a small. Comben was then able to free himself up (not concerned with his opponent taking a mark) to be third man up in aerial contests and intercept mark at will.

If you slow down the AFL360 vision, it shows this exactly. In the first contest, the ball is kicked long and high to a 3v3. Fritsch on McDonald, Trac on Corr and JVR on Pink. Comben comes over the top as the extra man and marks it. Before the ball gets there, his opponent Henderson can be seen on the screen trailing 15m away from the contest. So Comben has left Henderson, who failed to occupy dangerous space, and has intercept marked unopposed. Pause dazzle's video at 52 seconds and it shows this.

In the second contest, the ball is again kicked long to a 2v2. JVR on Corr and Trac on Pink. Again Comben comes in as the extra man and marks unopposed. However, on this occasion (pause dazzle's video at 57 seconds), we had two players unmarked at around the 50m line who did get to dangerous space but were not used (one of whom is Henderson, presumably Comben's opponent again).

So what does this show us? Well first it shows the structural hole left by a tall going off and allowing Comben the peace of mind to play on a small and free himself up. But that doesn't excuse what comes next, as coaches and players had the chance at 1/4 time and 1/2 time to react to the situation. So in the first contest, the long kick to a 3v3 isn't necessarily a bad decision, but Henderson has made the mistake of failing to get to dangerous space which allows Comben to zone off him. In the second contest, Henderson (and one other, maybe Chandler?) actually get separation inside 50 but the kicker fails to lower the eyes and goes long to a 2v2, which again Comben mops up as the loose man. This time it's a decision error from the kicker, as Henderson at least got to dangerous space and should've been used.

I think it shows it's not just one thing, but a combination of getting the structure right, the forwards getting to the right spots and the kickers making good decisions. If one thing breaks down, the whole connection doesn't work.

Compare and contrast this to the week prior where JVR smartly dragged Sam Taylor to the goal square and we nullified his ability to intercept mark in D50.

I think this is an underrated point. I don’t know how we can keep playing Bowey, Spargo, Henderson, Sharp in the same team, you can’t have that many little blokes in one team in today’s footy. Throw in Langdon and that’s 5 out of 22 who aren’t gonna take an overhead mark..

Having some tall lumber in their allows a focal point for which smalls can crumb. Yesterday we didnt adjust to the Jeffo injury and were kicking it straight to an outnumber in Comben and made the guy to look like an AA CHB but even if we did, we are no good when the ball hits the deck and dont apply enough pressure when the oppo defence is trying to exit.

Our coaching group are incapable of fixing it and our leaders are incapable of lowering their eyes. Viney the worst culprit but they are all the same - Oliver, Tracc, Gawn, Sparrow, Langdon

they must be morons to keep doing it.

 

It makes us unwatchable.

I might suggest any Marvel Hoodoo is an Urban Myth.  It's as invented as the backstory to the  villain of a Scooby Doo episide

Our foward line drops from being ok in ability when pickett is there due to his class to below average when he is not there. The norf practice match turned when he came on in the last quarter. We sruggle without him. 

Lets not completely lose it though, we are 1 and 1 in terms of acceptable performances

There are two aspects to this though, its not just having the composure or time to lower the eyes, it is having forwards run to create space and options, this aspect is on the coaching group (similar issues to the Blues to be honest).
