GWS’s experience won them the crucial moments at the end. If AJ had slotted his last shot we would have won. That’s footy.

You can overanalyse everything to death. We had an opportunity to beat a premiership fancy and fluffed it. Still so much to be positive about.

The wind was really peculiar. Very strong and random gusts.

The flags above the ground were clearly all blowing punt road end ferocously but the rain was falling towards the city road end and the ball was travelling much further towards the city road end.

In AJ’s defence it was a strong wind at ground level & it made that shot much harder than it looked

Yes the wind was diabolical down that end. In retrospect I wondered if  a set play would have been to keep posession, kick backwards and chip it around to get a better angle. GWS wouldn't have expected that. I always thought a point was a bad option at that stage given their ability to transition from kickout to the other end without us touching it.. I would love to hear the coaches thoughts on our inability to lock the ball in with under a minute to go.

I cannot stand the people messaging me saying ‘oh you guys tried so hard’ or ‘such a great effort’. No one sends that to Cats or Pies fans when they lose. We expect to win every game, that’s a poor loss in my mind. Only way to become a strong club.

Need to look at it objectively of were our list is vs GWS … we are regenerating , both Trac missed so much , Oliver wasn’t fit, loss of Brayshaw,  re inventing the midfield poor loss is the Blues, Port Adelaide, Saints

I know I'll get shot down for this but gawn again couldn't kick the goals when we needed him. That final shot I wasn't sure if he just fell short or he tried to set it up.

I was a bit surprised by gawns run up on that kick he normally runs out on an arc and kicks it through above post height from there but he just ran straight at it. He might have been worried about the swirly wind and trying to keep it low

But I thought Jeffo’s defensive pressure was really solid for a young tall and has come along way. I think we’ll persist with him and 2 others but I think Turner will come back for AJ sooner than later. Contest wise I thought Jeffo exceeded expectations. The big challenge for him (and all our forwards) is to draw the footy in good spots by upping his work rate to lead and present.

I love the way Jeffo jogs at the player with the ball then when they think he's not coming for them he puts on the burners and has really quick closing speed

Yep, as much as losses, especially closes ones or after being in front for so long, are infuriating sometimes they will just happen. I doubt our players tonight are casually shrugging off the loss. Honestly, after nearly every type of result a club will try and reset in a couple of day's time and get back to aiming at winning next week (and winning as many games as possible for the rest of the year.)

Yes my thoughts exactly as the game ended. AJ should not have taken that low percentage kick at goal with minutes to go. I don’t blame him I blame our senior players and particularly our coaches. He was shooting from near the interchange bench so no issue with instructions. Players needed to set up behind AJ and chip it around soaking up precious time, looking for a better angle and importantly forcing giants to advance forward to force a disposal and hopefully opening up a few holes in a crowded F50. And if that doesn’t occur put the ball into the forward pocket and out of bounds for a throw in. In short DO NOT GIVE THE OPPOSITION A POINT KICK OUT with a 2 minutes to go!

End of frustrated rant!

Just watched the game winning goal for the first time since getting home, and as suspected, just a huge amount of luck in it.

The oval ball literally bounced perfectly for them as they rolled the dice.  One bounce either right or left(pretty common in this game), and we gain control and probably win.  Not to mention an absolute spud ending up with the ball to kick the winning goal.

We did not loose the game because of fitness, one less game that GW$, the kids, the umpires, yadda, yadda, yadda . . .

We lost because:

  • there was ZERO on-field leadership during the last 100 seconds of the game, and
  • the off-field catastrophy of 2024 most definitely, probably, cost us Houston.

So utterly *&%#ing Melbourne.

Maybe he should use the "closing speed" a bit sooner? Just sayin

Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

We looked completely gassed in the last quarter. Combination of new faces and the extra week up the sleeve for GWS was a deciding factor IMV.

AJ competed manfully in the last but was struggling to get to contests. Those he did attend, I loved his aggression.

Was super impressed by Lindsay too, and all our debutants gave good accounts of themselves.

Too many regulation set shots missed though. Gawn (20m out) and Sparrow (40m out) early on and Fritta's snap early second, we really should be nailing those. Even one of them goes through and we win.

Was really happy with our centre clearance work, particularly early on. We really went for those pure, out the front clearances, and for the most part we converted them into scores.

Play like we did today and we'll win more than we lose this year.

We lost because there was ZERO on-field leadership during the last 100 seconds of the game. So *&%#ing Melbourne.

Watch the last play again. There was a lot of luck in that, that was no set play and we were literally a roll of the ball from regaining possession twice if not 3 times.

I know I am in the minority around here with how we will go this season but despite a lot of positives today we still lost. If we are to make finals this year we can’t afford to lose the close ones.

XL with an amazing debut looked like a seasoned pro.

Kozzy and McVee could well be two of our three most important players, we lack X factor and a gun lock defender without them.

Looking forward to watching the development of our youngsters this year.

They do their job. its the way we setup for the ground ball and are unable to create a stoppage or win a ground ball. infuriating.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
