They may have done, but if they did, it hasn’t seemed to have served them particularly well.

It’s something that I find somewhat bewildering, that clubs don’t seem to engage in properly targeted, structured, and individualised goal kicking practice.

    Little disappointed that there didn’t seem to be any leading in the forward line.

    Looks like that’s Roo‘s job, and if he ain’t there, nobody has the correct tickets to do it. Could be a demarcation dispute if somebody tries.
    Let’s hope both Roo and the team can get some traction in that part of the ground.

    Thought he played ok around the ground but is there a worse kick at goal than Billing’s?

    Yes Forwards always work better when Melksham is there to run the show. TMac must be played ahead of Howes or Hore

    We're talking small samples though. Did one player miss 6 easy shots? Maybe Billings missed a few. But even he can turn it around if today was the aberration.

    Nah, not a hot take. My Ethiopian mate even jokingly messaged me saying we sweat more than Ethiopian slaves.

    The amount of effort we exert just to take the ball forward 50 meters opposed to Collingwood or a Sydney at their absolute best with skill and precision makes me envious. We always follow up with strong defensive efforts, but we aren't as polished by foot, which is why we often chip the ball 15-20 meters trying to find an opening while the opposition closes the exits.

    Watching us over the last 3 years, often grinding out wins even the most horrific of opposition (think that round 11 match last year vs St Kilda where we blew them away in the first QTR with 11 scoring shots to 1 and only winning by 6 goals) has been tough watches.

    He had 7 clangers, the most on the ground.

    I thought Bowery looked troubled by the heat and just couldn’t get himself going. He seemed a step off the pace, which is very unlike him. He’ll be much better once the real season gets under way.

    I’m pretty sure he was named as an emergency, but yeah, I agree he’s probably not quite there yet. I do want to see him get a run at some point, but in the meantime, I really liked what Johnson brought… he’s not a particularly elegant player with lots of tricks, but rather a meat and potatoes kind of a player who brings plenty of physicality into the contest, creating a little chaos that sees the ball spilling loose, giving our smaller forwards something to crumb. He’ll only get better and will contribute goals.

    That’s something I couldn’t understand… wouldn’t it have been easier as well as financially more sound, to have had all of these non Victorian club games as home derbies?

    Embarrassingly kept getting out marked last week against North and has no second efforts or physical intent.

    You keep banging on about how well he trains or how good hes been, yet the MFC coaches beg to differ otherwise he would have simply played today or at worse named as a emergency. 

    He was neither. That's damning for a 3rd year key forward taken as a first rounder few years back. What does it say on him when the coaches prefer a guy that's toiled away at VFL level and can come in today and already look like that he belongs at AFL level and yet he's only been at the club for 5 minutes. 

    Um he was named as Emergency!  Johnson is not the answer with a very limited skill set!  Also, if you want to call out intent and physicalty you should also call out Fritsch then??  Sounds like you are calling Jeffo a bust ????

    It was nice to see the midfield back in order but jeez the forward line still looks like a dogs breakfast.

    I must say I don't understand the Windsor and Langdon moves at all. We don't launch our ball movement off the HBF and that's actually often been the role of the wings, so we move our two best wingers into roles they're totally unsuited for? 

    Langdon is a workhorse who kills you with gut running, I don't see what he offers at CBAs. Windsor has awesome burst out of contest and would be better suited to that role of we're going to move him. We've taken away both their best assets for what exactly?

    I think they didn’t show their hand of the game plane entirely, i would be concerned on our defending, leaking 16 goals which is what we built our premiership on

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
