Grandson of a gun

Featured Replies

I’m old enough to remember when Robbie Flower burst on the scene as a spindly bespectacled 17-year-old from Murrumbeena in 1973. His spectacular 272 game career with the Demons is a well documented one. We lost him 10 years ago, all too young at 59 years of age.

There was some excitement in the early 2000’s when his son Brad appeared on the scene with the Oakleigh Chargers but he lacked the height and size to make it to the big time and only got as far as the odd game at Sandringham VFA, mainly with their reserves (circa 2002).

Now, the grandson Jett Flower has been picked up at Coates Talent League level.

Unfortunately, there’s no grandfather/grandson rule but we wish him luck!

The MFC should really look after nurture this lad,  I can remember tulips first few games as well. And he and his dad coming into the redlegs room to applause after the game,  such a long time ago!!

No.

Not unless he's either Aboriginal or African, which he's not.  Or we're a northern state club, which we're not.

It’d be the biggest injustice in history if he’s not left to be taken by us.

Will Collingwood bear a grudge for Sam Weideman?

...And from what I hear on here, that'd be the surest way for him not to be available to us! 😄

Were he a grandson of a Cat, a Magpie or a Blue there may suddenly be a new rule - grandson of a player >250 games.

Gee if we don’t get him then it will test my 60 plus year loyalty. I would at least have to go and watch his first few games. If we get him and he makes it then I will be nearly as happy as when we won in 21. Oh to see that run and carry down the wing again.

Can we take him under the flora son rule?

Or the "Fuchsia-son" rule, when it is introduced.

Huh?

How is this the footy clubs fault if we don't get him? Silly take.

Number one, he's not aligned to the club regardless of his bloodlines. He falls under any normal draftee that comes through the junior talent system.

Number two, take away the romanticism if it all, if the club best saw fit in his talent and done their absolute work on him then yes, that's the only way the club will recruit him.

I don't want the footy club picking a kid purely because he's Robbie Flowers grandson. They've shown in the past that regardless of name (Kobe Farmer, Noah Yze), they're not afraid to turn them down because they did not fit our talent criteria, which is something I've loved about Jason Taylor and his team. Pick the best available talent alone.

In saying all that, so much water to go under the bridge. Hope he develops well.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
