IF Judd was good enough, he'd have played the role he wanted, reality is that Bowey, Windsor, Rivers and Salem were all not only ahead of him for the role he wanted, but comfortably ahead of him.

That's nothing against Judd, i wish him well at Freo and hope he does prove me wrong, but i've seen no evidence he's anything more than a back pocket lockdown specialist. I think he could have been all australian in that team first role, but he's more interested in personal glory than being a team player so he'll fit in well at Freo and back with Mummy and Daddy.

Once again, I'm sure in Freo's press release, Tim Lamb will be praised as being great to deal with....

In a universally agreed weak and compromised draft - why wouldn't you posture and hold for their pick 19.... instead of sealing this on day 2 of the trade period - even if you have to concede and take 23 later in the period - at least have a crack Tim!!

Judd’s strength is his ability with the play in front of him, particularly one on one.

His weakness is his ability to influence the game when the play is around him (ie, 360 degree chaos), like you see in the midfield. He struggled with this in juniors too, when he just couldn’t get involved in the play further up the field and ended up getting through to the rookie draft.

We did well to identify a role for that type of player, where the game could be much simpler for him and let his strengths work well. He works in straight lines, unlike Bowey and Salem, which is why they were preferred as rebounders. McVee has a shot up the field in the midfield but simply couldn’t get near the footy at all. It’s played away from his strengths and leant in to his weaknesses.

Freo tends to tell returning players exactly what they want to hear (eg, you can be a high possession player!) because they know that the trick is getting them to make the initial move back ‘home’. Once they’ve done that they can play them however they want since they’re unlikely to leave and it’s only a two team town. I hope that’s not the case for Judd as well but I don’t hope that as strongly as I used to.

Only problem promising a “Jordan Clarke role” is they have a similar player named “Jordan Clarke”… plus they have Young and a stacked midfield of lighter players not dissimilar to his attributes.

You’re obviously close with Judd and I’m sure you can see that 100 pages shows he was a well loved and highly rated talent. I hope he does great back home… but if he does happen to become a lockdown defender as @Axis of Bob has well put reasoning, then I hope when we play, Kossi kicks 10!

Could have very well been Jackson again this year too.

We had no power really as he was out of contract and could have just walked to the eagles in the PSD with no compensation. No in terms of picks, 23 is reasonable for where he was at.

The problem is the draft system with all the academy picks and other incremental changes is pushing what would be a fair pick at 23 far further down the list.

Now its the jobs of the team to find a gem at 23 for the team
