That's fantastic but I am scratching my head re next years picks? I assume he means tow first rounders next year?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Also said that he has never been more excited in his career at the talent in this draft.

Gday jnrmac, pretty sure he was speaking about last year and this year. Not this year and next.

    Thanks for that. I thought he said too but I was confused with the article below the video (where they misquoted him) saying  “Now we have four picks inside the top 12 over the next two years which will help us, we believe in the short, medium and long term.

    I think they got tunnel vision on that pick 9 trade. Gave Bombers way too many picks. Will probably come back to haunt us when/if trying to split pick 9.

    Pick 9 is great but shocking negotiating on our end.

    We either get pick 9 or we keep the picks we traded for it

    Not really. We wanted pick 9 because we have a particular target in mind and our later picks were the price. There was nothing to negotiate - they needed draft points and we wanted a high end draft pick. Neither party had wiggle room. This year's second and a future first was the crux of the deal and the other pics might have been the cost of doing business, but if pick 9 ends up being a gun then that's all that matters.

    5 + 15 to North for 2.

    Take 2 and 16 to the draft.

    Yep, or even Hynes and Hotton on top of that top 5 pick. Midfield hopefully sorted for the next decade.

    Taj Hotton looks a JT pick. Couple of fantastic games for Sandy before the ACL.

    I really looking forward to seeing what we do at the draft night. No matter we do I’m going to be pretty happy. Going to have 2/3 high end picks in a very strong draft, with JT at the wheel I’m super confident we will get a couple of cracking players. 
    It’s fun to think  of players or picks we might end up with. 
    How about trading picks 5&9 for Tigers picks 6,11 and 18?

    Dees have close ties through Trent and Richo’s relationship. Have been keeping tabs on Taj for a long time.

    Trigger warning for MFC drafting WA players with top 10 picks. But might we look at the possibility of snatching Bo Allan with pick 9 ahead of the Perth clubs? (That is only if in draft interviews he was open to a move interstate)

    This would be double dipping into the high level mid stocks this first round of picks holds. I would still prefer a key position pick with 9 but just spit balling.

    I think the mids we're going to have the choice of picking at 5/6 are Langford and Smillie. But even though he's a bit raw at the moment I can see Allan being better then both of those players. Just a thought.

    Have a feeling that if North want to trade down and still grab Tauru, they won't want to trade down past our pick 5. Jagga isn't a typical Melbourne pick, and there's a chance that we have Draper rated lower than consensus. That leaves FOS, Lalor and Langford as a clear top 3 on our board. All guesswork of course, but I don't think it's hard to imagine a world where we have Tauru at 4 based on the above scenario, and if we get wiped out on the aforementioned top 3 (good chance as it stands today) pick him at 5. 

    Think we'd do the above deal if we think there's a clear top 3 in this draft.

    It has gone from throw a blanket over top 15 to a definite top 6 to a top 3 in just the last week, it seems. Not to mention that last years draft was supposed to be very good at the time, if I remember correctly. 

    I see a big difference in quality between the duke and the Kolt so I hope that we keep 5 and 9. We need real class top 15 players not a decent quality top 25. 

    Thats my preference but I am happy to look on the sunny side if we do play more funny beggers though.

    I’m seeing it the same way, and whilst I’d be more than happy with Tauru if North didn’t want to deal I wonder if we split pick 5 if he’s the best available there.

    See if Richmond will do 10 and 18. Or someone else can get a similar level of picks with the first one between 8 and 12.

    JT isn’t afraid to go his own way at the top of the draft but I’m underwhelmed by the small mids and Smillie.

    I see Bo as a flight risk so I would pass on him

    Theres a few options.

    Freo 9 for 14 & 30

    WCE 9 for 12 & 26

    Port 9 for 13 & 29

    Rich 9 for 10/11 & any of 18,20,23,24

    One of these will happen imo. Hopefully with Richmond

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
