Is he an RFA or UFA? Given heโ€™s playing the VFL, will cost us some mouldy pecans ?

According to Footywire is a Non-Free Agent. Essentially means it will have to be a trade. A fourth rounder should get it done you would imagine.

Oh, thanks

I thought his contract ended this year

It does. Not everyone out of contract is a free agent.

Mid season draftees get to put the contract length in before the draft, either 6 or 18 months. Derksen obviously went the latter. Out of contract, I expect gws to make it easy this time round. Will need a token 4th thrown their way.

We donโ€™t play hardball and unlikely we need to.

Giants not trading Derksen last year should cop more heat than it does.
23 year old kid desperate to get him for reasons outside of footy in a desperate family situation told to stay firm and live without his family to play VFL all year and not one AFL game

Sometimes there is more to life than footy. the Kid couldn't believe McCartney said no to him when he explained why he had to get home.

I find it weird because when I had a meeting with the father of a player of ours that once played for them, he said Giants more than any other club were by the far the best at looking after players and their family. Big words considering between his sons, they've been at 6 of the biggest clubs in the league.

I'm, glad we have persisted and offered this kid a life line

A total joke GWS refuse his trade last year, only to not give him a single senior game this year, and given he could have moved closer to family and made more money to feed his kids!

I hope we give them a pack of stale peanuts now.

Even more annoying considering we traded Bedford to them for well unders.

A-holes!

Giants have a chip on their shoulder after losing 2-3 prime aged free agents in the last couple years.

Should get to us for a pack of chips. Will be a good pick up, we need more mature key position bodies. Curious to see if they see his future as a defender or forward.

Giants don't lose players they want to lose

Bobby Hill is really the only one in that time.

They're usually a very good team to worth it, there's a reason they've kept guys like Greene Whitfield and Coniglio happy for so long

Agree with this

Just stubborn

He was under contract and wasn't owed anything. I'm sure he'll be okay.

To my knowledge, GWS doesn't own a crystal ball, either. Maybe they rate him as someone capable at AFL level and good depth in the event of an injury crisis. Potentially handy if you think you're a contender.

Well considering Leek Aleer couldn't get games till recently, think they knew a 23 year old who hadn't played wasn't high in their pecking order.

This year, Aleer, Bucklet, Taylor have all had injuries and they hadn't played.

Although, I do wish maybe were as ruthless with ANB and told him to stick when he asked to go home right after signing a new contract

Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't rate him. If you're contending, you might as well hold every capable AFL body to their contracts. Were they going to pick a better player for season 2025 with a pick in the 50s? Probably not.

Agree re ANB. Admittedly, I don't know the extent of his family issues (nor Derksen's, to be fair) but on the whole I agree with Kane Cornes on this one. If you have a contact and it isn't in our best interest to trade you, bad luck.

It's ruthless though, we could use some (any) of that

Dominating is being kind to him, even for you. Heโ€™s contributing and deserves a go but heโ€™s not controlling games.

Some VFL stats;

Wade Derksen - 56 games for 350 marks

Jeffo - 43 games for 156 marks

Thatโ€™s quite a difference.

now do 2025...

On the contrary, they managed that trade exactly how I'd want my club to.

Everyone is happy !!

spargo is a free agent

given how we've mismanaged his injuries for 2-3 years, he should walk

Out of contract and not even a whisper of us progressing to re-sign him. Granted I haven't heard any speculation of clubs chasing him either. 3rd round compo, probably 2nd at best if he exercises his FA rights. Nil compensation if we bring in a FA like Mihocek.

What happened to Wade Derkson?

Toe injury and out for the year. Appears he's likely dees bound this off-season.

In 2023, played as a key forward in the VFL before the switch to the defence in 2024. Outstanding year again as a key defender in the 2025 Giants VFL team. Averages 9 marks and 21 disposals a game. Stuck behind Buckley, Taylor and Idun, and Giants preferred Aleer above him.

ย

Really hoping that we get Wade Derkson good size and hard at it and as previously mentioned I see him stiffening up our backline the same as I see Luker Kentfield adding some hardness to our forward line. Get on board Wade, we could use you.

With Fullarton an almost certain delist, Derksen would fill the spot of the player whose name is frequently misspelled. laugh
