In addition to Moore going to ground in an unusual way (sliding on his knees), the other two things in Kossie's defence are that 1) he tries to soccer the ball off the ground; and 2) he does not look at Moore.

Two other points about this incident.

1. Kossie only took one step after Moore elected to slide (and he was at near top speed so he could not deviate). This meant that impact was inevitable.

2. The ball bobbles back to Moore at the last bounce, which meant that Kossie misses the ball with his kick off the ground attempt.

I thought the Weideman decision was wrong at the time.

Players sliding in like that are leaving themselves open.

But I don't see why lifting your arm to protect your ribs and shoulder is dirty.

If you wanted to protect your ribs, you'd keep your arm tucked in wouldn't you?

I don’t understand how that can even be thought of as a suspension?

He had eyes on the ball and was trying to soccer it. Moore went to ground and that was the reason his head was hit.

If that’s a suspension the AFL have lost control of the game

No because the rib cage goes around your body and is not just on your side.

The belief that you are less likely to cause concussions from not bracing is false. If you hit someone in the head at full speed, it doesn’t matter (to the player hit in the head) if you’re arm is straight or parallel to the ground.

'They had a ton out'? DeGoey and Mihocek. Mitchell is cooked and McStay is bang average.  Who else? We had 5 AA superstars missing,  Windsor,Sparrow and Spargo. That's forgetting about Brayshaw and Smith who weren't able to replace. Sorry, no comparison.

DeGoey, Mihocek and McStay (last years final) are precisely the players that have caused us troubles in recent meetings.

Yeah we had more out, but they weren’t exactly at full strength, and played a number of inexperienced players.

Not really. 2024 will start with Kozzi on the sidelines just like 2023

Maybe he will, but to be suspended for going for the ball is a joke. The AFL have lost the plot due to legal actions against them.

houston was worthy of suspension as he wasn’t going for the ball, this is not.

Was disappointed MFC didn’t give Maynard more aggro when he went for Kozzy - Milkshake only one that intervened. Perfect chance to drive him headfirst into the fence went missing!

Urghhhh he’s in trouble just from the very last action as far as I can see.

Yes Moore ducks at the last second but if you watch the replay, Moore continues at the ball but kozzie pivots direction on his left foot away from the ball and towards Moore and ends up going across him.

If he continued to run in the direction of the ball, he would’ve had a chance to argue it was more of a ‘collision’ rather than a hit to Moore. The argument will be that Kozzie initiated the contact when he had another option, not change direction and instigate contact first.

Reverse the jumpers and make it a prelim final though and we would not have the same outcome in terms of weeks. Would be ‘nah the Melbourne player dropped his knees, it was his fault’ 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

... and don't forget Premiership player Minivan, who will almost certainly be playing finals this year, unlike his ex team mates.  😀

PS when I re read this post I was going to correct the autocorrect, but ... no, why?   Probably a reasonable alternative spelling.

Thanks.

You are reminding me once again of one of my big hobby horses.   Players who lead with their heads into a contest need to be penalised every time, to break the habit instead of their neck.

especially when it is Darcy "Spleenbuster" Moore

He deviates off his line and steps into the bump. He's gone for 3.

He deviates towards the ball and tries to kick it off the ground and braces after Moore unexpectedly slid into the contest.

If Moore had have got to the ball earlier and attacked the ball in that manner, Kossie would have got a free kick for taking his legs out.

We had way more inexperienced players on the park. Pies just about the oldest in the league. One could mount an argument that they were anywhere near affected by injury like us. We had close to 10 first team players out to their 3. Not even close. Because McStay caused us trouble in one game means little. Cox destroyed Richmond in the 2018 prelim. Both he and McStay are average players. DeGoey was indeed a miss. As the late and great Ron Barrasi was oft quoted " there were reasons why we lost, not excuses".

I think he’ll get 3 unfortunately. He doesn’t deserve 3, he should get off, but  we all know the AFL too well.

Great opportunity for McAdam to have a really strong pre-season and play his role for the first few weeks.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
