The article opening sentence: "Melbourne's off-field crisis has deepened with former vice-president and insurance industry heavyweight Geoff Freeman declaring his interest in a takeover of the club's embattled board." states that the former club VP, Peter Freeman, “who is close to star midfielder Christian Petracca, confirmed he was giving ‘serious consideration’ to a run for president amid ongoing turmoil at the club”. Freeman also is quoted: "I will do whatever is best for Melbourne - we need to resolve all of our outstanding issues and we need to do it quickly." "I have a lot of respect for our current president, …" The bloke has expressed an interest in taking part in a democratic process which, if successful, would lead to his taking over from the current caretaker president. That’s what often happens in the AFL and, in fact, it’s happening at a couple of other prominent clubs at the moment. So why the dramatics suggesting that Freeman's act of throwing his hat in the ring is causing a deepening crisis? That seems to be deeply disrespectful to Freeman (who I do not know) and to the Melbourne Football Club. Would Collingwood get this sort of treatment from the media in such circumstances? After all, the Magpies are about to undergo a major overhaul at the top with the imminent replacement due to ill health of President Jeff Browne by a previously unknown (that’s what I was told by a Magpie fan who won’t be able to vote on the choice). Does that herald a deepening crisis at a club that failed to make the finals just one season after winning a premiership, a club where the circumstances of the defection of football boss Graham Wright to Carlton after swanning around the world for half a season should be raising eyebrows and when chief executive Craig Kelly is embroiled in an unfair dismissal claim by a former club employee? And according to my mail, there might still be some whiffs in the air about the racism debacle that affected them recently. And I won’t start on Essendon and it’s cultural issues. Let’s just continue to pile on one club even when a potential and possibly worthwhile candidate for club president emerges. How does Geelong get away with its culture problems? Stengle. Bruhn. Now they’re trying to stitch the Doggies to get their paragon of virtue Bailey Smith with a lowball offer. Tell me again how they expect to get Clarry when they have zero trade and draft capital to offer? 2 Quote

GM11 793 Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 When I consider the AFL football media, I find myself wondering what they actually produce. I include all the so called journalists and commentators in this. Most have absolutely no personality, those that do are just plain irritating. What they are is leeches, presently trying to suck the life out a club that they see as an easy mark. Why? They know deep down that they have to justify their position. If they all quit and went to work at something useful to society, no one would even notice. 3 Quote

Clintosaurus 7,953 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Geelong also have a local newspaper where the journos are very good at burying any bad Cats stories. Similar to the Courier-Mail and the Broncos, especially in the 1990s. Some of the stuff that never made the public domain..... 1 Quote
Whispering_Jack 31,368 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Geelong playing hard ball over Bailey Smith is more than a little ironic given the demands it made when Tim Kelly wanted to go back to Perth. 1 Quote

Clintosaurus 7,953 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Geelong think their [censored] doesn't stink. Got the 90s Essendon thing going. Quote
Jack Vineys Anger Manager 425 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Kane Cornes having a sook tonight about Brad Green has made my day. It also shows just what a pathetic little man Kane is. He can give it, but can't take it. I know some don't like our president tweeting about a media story, but its clear it has got up the nose of the precious media. More please Brad. 3 1 Quote

These factors more than compensate for any “ culture” deficiencies. 4 1 Quote

Wrecker46 3,130 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 There is one thing that stops the pile on towards Melbourne and earns our media department much undeserved money. Front page pic in the Herald picture book of Oliver and Petracca running around shirts off together before they are due back at training 1 1 Quote

Big Gun 88 Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Almost feel sorry for poor Damo. Making himself look like a fool rehashing the same pathetic lines from weeks ago on the Sunday Footy Show that he and Kane obviously have agreed to share like “mess of a club” and “clap clap” again and again. Pretty embarrassing really. Resigned to the fact that whatever Melbourne do now as a result of the review will be ridiculed and torn to shreds by these parasites so really don’t care what they come out with from here. Galvanise Dees and bring on 2025!!!!! 2 Quote

And nor should we. Pick 5 is gold. On his Houston sledge, it is a classic example of the eye watering lack of self awareness by the media. Media endelessly bangs on about tracc, oliver, koz and issues at the club. All stay. Petracca apparently 'desperate' to leave - but no so desperate that he ensured it was not possible by not being open to being traded to a club with top 5 draft picks to offer as part of a trade Player says Oh, my decision to come to the dees influenced by all the noise about the club. Where there's smoke. Media - we're just reporting the facts. We're neutral. What a joke. Edited October 17, 2024 by binman 5 2 Quote

Pathetic lack of accountability— Not ONE journo mentions how Trac is now re engaged at club and was super excited with getting pick 5/9 nah nah OR fact even Claz’s MUM called out the lies of media re him wanting to leave — it’s just downright vitriolic tripe and the lot of em well thank next year for helping motivate and galvanise our playing group. Loved Tommo this morning telling CORN that basically if you went down to club you’d be shocked at how close everyone is etc but again that was brushed off even though Tommo could easily throw us under bus after being delisted he basically said he’s unsure what all fuss is about.. 6 2 Quote

deejammin' 2,420 Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) This article from Barrett sounds like a petulant ten year old, “clap clap”? Pathetic. It’s not even accurate, the “positive spin” on our trade period is that we got pick 9 and go into a super draft with two top ten picks. You can argue we overpaid, that our first round pick next year will be higher than 9 because we’re going to have a terrible year (I disagree). But this is clearly a pathetic dummy spit that the “ last minute Geelong offer” that the club was going to “have to take” that he was banging on about in his last one of these sliding doors, never came to pass. Also that his shots at Pert haven’t landed yet, our “mess of a club” is completing its reviews, ensuring due process and going about its business. Trac called Lamb to congratulate him on pick 9, while Clayton loves the club and will come out and say so. Meanwhile Tim Lamb sat and had three sausage rolls on the last day of trade week and talked about pick swaps as Damo looks like a fool because his narrative, that Lamb was lying and Clayton was desperate to leave looks less true than, Richo, Green, Goodwin and Lambs narrative that they were never trading him and while Geelong had Clayton’s interest he was never going and was ok with that. Barrett clearly, clearly, hates our CEO personally, and hates our club and is not impartial with his reporting, remember that next time. Edited October 17, 2024 by deejammin' 6 1 1 Quote
