Hard not think it was a blessing in disguise missing finals - particularly if we land a gun at pick 5.

won't know that til we see the results in 2025, and beyond

win a premiership with this cohort some time during the may - gawn - viney dotage, and yes, it might well be the season we had to have

i want to see us 'bounce' next year at a minimum

That Carlton game literally split this place down the middle. Some even suggesting that breaking even with them from midway through the 2nd to midway through the last was a positive instead of Carlton answering our challenges, steadying the ship and clearly being the better side on the night.

Only reason we were in that Carlton game was because Trac went into god mode

See that gossip column journo Damo is at it again in his “if and when” dribble. Geelong would have finished 12th if not for his man crush Scott’s coaching (never a negative word against the Cats) and Petracca still on the table for trade. Ah well, I clicked on it so has the desired outcome.

To be honest, every time I go to this thread it's got 10+ pages of unread posts so my reply probably out of context now anyway.

Good points. It's more than likely learned behaviour anyway and trauma response to being such a bad team for long peroids of time of their lives. I have been the same but shaken it off years ago.

A realistic view on each season is 1 in 18 chance every time to be premiers, need good management of the club in every facet, healthy players physically, mentally and emotionally, good form and best form during finals, and a bit of luck and that still doesn't guarantee you a GF, let alone winning it.

But victims? Sheesh, far out. It's a sport, a game and we can't control anything because we are just the fans.

Anyway, I realise this is a CP5 thread so I'll vanish like a fart in the wind into another thread.

I just drink a lot it helps no end

I have flopped in my view on Tracs red bull trip. Earlier I was of the view he was doing it to turn up in top top shape for pre season. I still think that is partially true.

However Gawny mentioned on on MMM in his usual spot that Trac was upset about the camps timing prior to his injury.

I genuinely now wonder whether Trac is using the current situation to bend the will of the club to let him go on this camp.

Is this the only camp globally available to athletes? Could he have attended another camp and a BNF? Im starting to think where there is a will there is a way. I get the feeling that we are potentially creating new issues where we are treating our players based on their star factor.

Speaking of new issues just created by your honourable self, i am having trouble with the points here.

I agree and I'm of the same opinion, making prelims is the pass mark as that gives you a shot to win the flag. Anything can happen in Prelims as we saw with the Cats on the weekend, GWS last year etc

It's the same stance I have for the NFL, you make the final 4 (AFC/NFC Championship Games) and that shows you are a good team. After that is when luck kicks in and the fittest/luckiest teams can go all the way.

I think we should have won another flag, but we definitely should have made the prelims to give us that chance.

I had the impression the AFL were concerned that players like Max,Brayshaw, Petracca  and Goody were just too popular, and sticking it up the Media Rabble was too much to swallow. Things just escalated from there as they couldn't really handle it.

I suspect, when the outliers are removed the median response would be at best the strength of our list is equal to those clubs.

On paper.

The team you're able to get on the field and keep on the field (consistency) is something else.

Helped along by the specifics of their situation: Academy picks, extra cap space, location etc. etc.

(Not disagreeing with your premise either).

Absolutely.

No coincidence of course that our two most successful years under goody, 2018 and 2021, directly correlate to seasons with a great run with injury

Or that our two least successful seasons, 2019 and this year correlate with a wretched run with injury.

No coincidence either that in both of those seasons we missed finals the preceding year.

(i.e. longer off-season/break).

Let's hope there's another non coincidence next year - as in what happened the year after we last missed finals!

Max is the guest on today's episode of "The Footy with Broden Kelly"

It's worth a listen - always good to hear Max talk, but he talks about the effect of the shorter pre-seasons and how, for the first time in a while, they have a good headstart for season '25.

Gotta say I was pretty peed off when I read this. So the only thing Barrett has to say about us is some clap trap about CP. If I met him right now, it would be swift knee to the goulies followed by the Liverpool kiss

Christian Petracca was probably a sneaky chance to win the Brownlow Medal if he hadn't got injured.

However, Patrick Cripps getting 45 votes was absolutely ridiculous.

At least Nick Daicos missed out with an equally amazing 38 votes.

Would love to see Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver or Max Gawn win a Brownlow Medal. But more Premiership Medallions for the Demons are highly more desirable!

The reason Cripps got 45 votes is clearly because they have no other good midfielders. We have had CP5 and Clarry fighting each other (metaphorically) for votes.

If CP5 really does want to go, Carlton clearly need him....

Barrett is a bottom feeder that tries to generate 'stories'. Just saw him on the Sunday Footy Show trying to trade Harry McKay out of Carlton again, this time to Brisbane Lions 🤦‍♂️

Barrett probably got bullied quite a bit at school and developed his obnoxious and abrasive manner from this.

If he was bullied more he might have had a deeper insight into what a [censored] of a man he is.

Partially true. Cripps was the Carlton midfield this season. Sam Walsh had a parial pre-season and ongoing back issues (and still got 16 votes) and Cerra had multiple hamstrings, barely played this season.

If Walsh was fully fit, there is no way known Cripps could get 45 votes this season.

Next season, Trac will take votes off Crippa so two Brownlows it will have to have to be for PC9. Hmmm #9, #5 ... 1995 ... its all starting to make sense now 😜

There appears no good reason why he remains in the media yet he seems to float up to the surface of the septic tank every year

That's due to Daniher "retiring" and going back to TWSNBN for a million a year or more.

David King was no different and had Fagan sacked after round 6 or 7 from memory.

Too many blokes trying to make themselves relevant making ridiculous headlines among a cesspool of journalists

Would it be possible to enlighten me in what or who TWSNBN is.

Also what role did Joe Daniher have and when was he there?

Thanks in advance.

Harry is not on the market and he doesn't want to go anywhere. This has been made clear to everyone recently when his name was floated (with no basis in reality) with Petracca possibly leaving the Dees. Barrett probably just wants to generate cheap clicks and views, a barrel scraper.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
