Does the Burgess model work anymore?  Crows haven't really improved, and our players look exhausted in the second half of each season 2022-24 following the Burgess model.

The Crows had the hardest fixture out of anyone. They actually had some decent form the back half of the year. Surely Burgess still studies this stuff to improve. His approach of the May hamstring in the 2021 finals seemed almost academic in nature.

The most important loss from our 21 premiership team IMHO.  Never has our list been fitter than when he was here

Selwyn is doing a great job and most of our injuries have been contact injuries which are unavoidable

There's more to his job than avoiding soft tissue injuries though. I don't put it all on Griffith, but it seemed pretty clear our fitness was below standard this year and how we handled many injuries seemed to not work at all. Looking at the seasons of Petty, Salem, Lever, Spargo, Bowey and more tells you something is wrong in terms of disconnect between the selection committee and the fitness staff/doctors. Again, that's not solely on Griffith, but something isn't working there.

Petty missed a whole pre-season and played every game didn’t he?

Missed the first 2 games but yes, and he performed terribly for much of the year. That's a problem don't you think? Hence the fitness/management/selection point I raised.

I don’t think that’s on Selwyn though.  He is there to get him to the start line and then it’s up to the coaches from there.  I see your point though

The thing is Burgess's influence went well beyond the start line. It was like having another highly-respected motivational coach for the team.

We looked pretty fit vs Gold Coast.

Not really.

They looked unfit and disinterested.

Selwyn is the injury specialist, Burgess is the fitness specialist.

Ideally we have both, but I doubt Selwyn would stay if Burgess came back.

We absolutely need a new fitness specialist as our fitness was patently not good enough.

Get him back to the club!

Probably too late, the brown paper bags have struck.

He seems to move around a bit. He will be a great get for whatever club gets him.

They’ll win the flag next year

Probably increases Tracc’s chances to go to Carlton. He was the one player more than others who was never fitter than under Burgo.

Personally I’m not against backing Selwyn in, we just need to give him more mid 20’s fit players to work with. Especially in the midfield.

It's so difficult for any fan to be able to assess the performance of a high performance manager because we simply don't have the numbers and information required to make informed judgements.

what i will say is that when Burgo was at the club the best 22 had a lot more seasoned AFL ready bodies than this season which has a mid age void, a bunch of really young guys and some 28s and over.

they were working with two totally different things, and i'd say Selwyn is doing quite well considering he has a much more difficult task.
