The question for me is: are we on an improving trajectory or not? All the talk of the lag before the so-called ‘new game plan’ starts working etc can only go so far. Eventually, the team has to be evaluated for trajectory.

The answer is clear: our trajectory is downwards and has been for some years. Whatever the reason, in any institution or organisation the top leadership has to take responsibility - that is why they are paid so much over the odds.

There are lots of overpaid senior players as well who appear to be on a downward trajectory and others like JVR who are simply not up to the task.

I saw an article this week that analysed the shift away from contested strategies at the centre to a new ‘outside’ dynamic. MFC is still trying to reinvent itself with the former and the players who excelled in the past with that strategy are not suited to the new way.

I would terminate the senior coach (nicely) this morning.

Sadly ...true

he obviously can't fix the issues. if he could, he would have done it by now

we need some aggressive list turnover no doubt.

but I'm not handing the keys to someone who has been unable to make any discernible improvements in our game plan after 2 years of trying

he had us primed in 2021 and at the pointy end in 22 and 23.

since then its been downhill as the game has changed and the rest of the league have adapted

We need new leadership and direction. a new voice and ideas

Thank you Simon for a fantastic run there for a few years. you're a legend of the club no matter what happens from here

If nothing more he is just damaging his legacy by unnecessarily extending his tenure.

If its anything to go off based on what David Zita was saying on FOX after the game then get use to having Goody "for 2026 and beyond" He said the club fully backs Goodwin and want to add experience players and not get younger

Tough pill to swallow losing last night in itself but then to hear that news was even more deflating.

He can’t even build a game plan to beat a Carlton VFL side

We just need a good coach with new ideas & a modern game plan, not the the king of spin & the players best mate

Goodwins press conferences are embarrassing & cringe worthy, talks for six minutes and says nothing

The club is in free fall, the new CEO & President are on holiday, so Goodwin will get another year

What a joke of an organisation

I hoping the words of ‘fully backs’ are the kiss of death Dazzle. Surely the club is looking around for another coach….

Or, at least have a plan B such as bringing in an assistant coach for a succession plan in 2027.

Cranky, i have not seen one sign in all your posts that you support the club. You criticise it more viciously and consistently than any Collingwood or Carlton or whoever supporter does. You are not a supporter at all. So please, honour the promise you have made in this post.

Who is David Zita sorry for asking?

Yes you will and you know you will, because you're a tragic, same as the rest of us

Club is delusional, members/supporters will vote with their feet not turn up or not buy memberships! We were deplorable, playing 1 qtr doesn't cut it, he’s unwound every aspect of what we were, he’s record since 21 is poor, we will win less games than last year & another bottom 6 Finnish, the blind faith for winning a flag 4 seasons ago sums up our cub , one hit wonders

Ollie, I have not seen one sign in all your posts that you are able of critically analysing the club. You defend it more viscously and consistently than any Collingwood or Carlton or whoever supporter does. You are not a supporter at all, in fact you may have Stockholm syndrome. Please seek help.

I don’t think there’s any realistic world in which he gets sacked before Guerra and Smith have started, whether we like it or not.

That aside, I think (aside from your gratuitous drive by on JVR) your post is fair.

We can’t just sit behind the “we’re changing how we play and change takes time” rhetoric. We’re still losing games the same way, and losing them to bad sides to boot.

5 of our 12 losses this year have been to the bottom 8. I’d argue all 5 have been our worst 5 games, too (maybe the GC thrashing is up there). Losing to the top 9 is one thing, and had we had a middling season of beating weaker sides but not being able to match it with better ones, I’d cop the “change takes time” thing a touch more. I’d obviously like to see some better evidence of a new, workable, efficient gameplan which appears to be capable of driving us to a flag, of course.

But to have a muddled team consistently losing to bottom 8 sides, the same way most times too (slow start, more scoring shots, more inside 50s, inaccuracy), and finishing the year with 6-8 wins only, with the best run with injuries we’ve had in years, is unacceptable.

I would love to know who Zita spoke to. I have no trust in the club knowing where we are at. My biggest concern with replacing Goodwin has been I don’t trust the club to find someone better, still don’t.

No thanks

I agree Billy, but it is the lessor of two evils. I like plan A better. Goodwin and Richardson moved out.

If your happy to win a wooden spoon next year by all means let's keep Goody.

Those who say, not his fault.....whose is it?

Pretty sure he did say he spoke to high official at the club. May have said Guerra? I can't recall sorry..

Anyone... Anyone at Melbourne would do well to engage brain and just STFU. If they repeat the f-up of prematurely endorsing Goody then they will be culpable for destroying membership of the club.

People are ALREADY leaving in droves

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
