"There needs to be players who put their hands up and take responsibility and say "I haven't been the best teammate". It's all me, me me. That's the biggest issue I had when I went from Hawthorn to Melbourne, getting these players to understand it wasn't about them."

Insightful analysis from someone who's been there. And no mention of the coach or coaching or game plan or whatever.

Is this honestly new news to you?

At what point during Oliver's adventures down the well, Petracca's brand-driven off season episode, Viney's drawn out contract negotiation or May's latest pub scuffle were you convinced our leaders were acting in the best interest of the team?

You're kidding yourself. Really.

That's very telling, isn't it?

Too many guys that don't do the team things.

We were absolutely doing these things across 2021-2023. Last year it started to fade, and you have to wonder if those bridges with Trac, Oliver and the rest of the playing group are irreparably damaged.

This has been mentioned on here so many times. It’s the ‘kick it to Maxy down the line’ and ‘kick it to a contest in our F50 near the boundary line’ instructions. Percentage plays. Create a contest.

It’s killed our instinct to look for the best options available and instead instilled a reactive adherence to a now defunct system.

Geez. Can we prise this guy out of his media commitments and back to the club?

My thoughts exactly. He is so articulate in his explanation. I hope he still has the ear of some of the players. They need to hear this...its damning but fixable.

I reckon its every single senior player that has this ego problem. Sheparding, tackling, covering, chasing. We hardly do this stuff or way too few do it.

Indeed. We also need our senior players to do what the Hawthorn senior players did (Roughead, Lewis, Hodge and even Mitchell) at the back ends of their careers and play selfless roles.

I get that Trac and Clarry should be in their prime, but they're best used as very good role players. Think Sidebottom and Pendlebury in 2023.

Viney needs to play forward, Trac needs to play more forward than mid, and Oliver needs to play a more defensive role at stoppages, because the opposition play through his man. In 2023, Clarry's game went to another level because he added that intercept possession strength to his game. That needs to return.

Less complaining and more just playing your role to a high standard.

I'd have had Lewis back at the club before Jones, but what's done is done.

Seriously?

You're asking why Goodwin, a human/father/husband, doesn't just give up and walk away from his income?

I'm sure you, like the rest of us, would hate the idea of our players giving up. If you want them to buckle down and work hard, expect the coach to do the same.

If the club decides he's no longer the right man for the job, they can sack him. Until then, Goodwin works hard to fix the mess he's contributing to, just like the players.

Really thought that through eh champ !!

Now have a proper think about how such things really happen in the big world. Especially...the Sports World .

Come back please with a more considered response

He's also walked the walk as a player obviously so has the street cred to back up his words. He's good mates with Max I think.

I agree with all those comments except Viney play forward,

He’s small, slow, can’t kick off either foot, nor mark over his head.

Some forward.

The Brand should watch Dangerfield and play like that. Oliver should watch Rowell and get serious.

That’s harsh, Green hasn’t put a foot wrong and can stand aside satisfied he did pretty much exactly what he’l needed to.

Green is a club fanboy, he is as guilty as any of feeding the players egos. We need people who are discompassionate and stand for TEAM values. Kate Roffey was way better in that regard. It's hard to imagine how an organisation could make a swap like that when 1. they don't trade their star players and go all in on a successful 2025, and 2. at the same time bring in an interim CEO which spells transitional phase, who happens also to be a rather choleric fanboy

every human in any role has a belief that they can achieve success, otherwise they wouldn't be there. he would not suddenly abandon his self-determination after a bad streak- because what we understand as a catastrophic streak is only relative to him. It's not up to him to stand down, but certainly he could ask what the club thinks is best and then talk it through

Agree, never liked the addition of Jones, too familial, not dispassionate enough. Horrible decisions the club has made with he and Green. Roffey, a female touch who was a receptacle for team values snubbed. Green focusses on his 'stars' - team doomed

Thanks Frankie

Would love to get Hodge down there

Lewis seeing things that should not be happening at this level says it all.

How have we regressed to this to become one of the worst ball using and pressure teams in the AFL now beggars belief.

Pressure, Attack on Ball, Fitness, Skills, 2nd efforts, Foot speed, mids too stationary at stoppage, very few line breakers, lacking support running and spread from stoppage, Selfless play, 1 percenters, Goal kicking accuracy, lack of front and square crumbers, Forward entry craft and forward craft in general.

A lack of key targets up forward and around the ground contested marking beasts.

Players not looking in board as their first option as Lewis is suggesting.

So much to fix but why / how are we even at this point?

They say you play as you train. Have we dropped away here maybe? Leaders not driving standard hard enough?

How did that work out when we sacked Neeld? Neil Craig was an experienced, competent senior coach. We were losing badly under Neeld but then went even further backwards under Craig. Which is exactly the same pattern we've seen Every Time we've sacked a coach mid-season. The incoming stand-in coach ALWAYS lost more matches than the coach he replaced. And not just at Melbourne either, happens across the league, and for that matter, happens across multiple leagues in different sports.

The only way to change a team's trajectory is through list change.

Delusional.

Mercifully, those in charge at the club understand this, also understand what Goodwin and the coaching team are trying to do, and understand where the list is at. As for the supporters ...

So the coach is irrelevant? It's all the list?

One thing I don't understand, why Goodwin doesn't just step aside?

Is his motivation purely the money/contract?

Can't he see how much damage he is causing to the club?

Maybe there's more money if he sticks around then gets shown the door.

In these tough times, it's hard to blame him but there are people here I'm sure doing it tougher that pay their membership so there's that.

Or maybe he still thinks he's the best man for the job.

He's either to be applauded for staying on a sinking ship or condemned for selfishly taking a cheque each month for this tripe.

He's got a flag under his belt so he can be reasonably forgiven for hanging on. It's not necessarily selfish but please turn things around next week.

Failure to do so will see most people see him rightly or wrongly in the selfish camp. And it's then a slippery slope until he's shown the exit regardless of his motives.

It's a tough gig this coaching game.

A lifespan not too dissimilar to a liberal party leader for a while there.

Best of luck to you Simon. We at least owe you that much.

If you think things can be turned around in a week, then not only would I like some of what you're taking, half the teams in the AFL would like a word. Expect a call from WCE, Richmond, North, Essendon, Carlton etc. in the coming days.

Gawn’s post match interview last Saturday after the loss was creepy in the sense it was far too positive from what was displayed on field. What he regurgitated sounded almost robotic and cultish in the sense of feeling the obligation to front up AGAIN as captain.

(Paraphrasing) “Happy to be in this challenging position and we love to go down the highway”

Really..?

Gawn is obviously stuck between a rock and a hard place, but really getting sick and tired of the club wheeling him out on a far too regular basis to defend the [censored] we are in. Goodwin is the epitome of this.

If we go for a younger coach like Jamie Graham to rebuild this side, we may lose Pickett and Petracca but there’s hope to keep them if a John Longmire comes in.

There's still hope for the club either way as it desperately needs change..

Gawn has been brainwashed.

Good

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
