How do these gutter journalists get away with saying things like itโ€™s his dream to play with Geelong?

When has he ever said that?

How they continuously get away with making things up?

Clayton Oliver has started his own pre-season early, as the 27-year-old clings on to hope that Melbourne will trade him to Geelong before next Wednesdayโ€™s deadline.

The four-time Melbourne best and fairest has been spotted several times in his home town of Shepparton this week, training weights and running.

A source at Geelong, who wasnโ€™t willing to speak publicly given that Oliver still has six years of his contract still to run at Melbourne, said the star midfielder was willing to take a pay cut if it helped get a deal across the line.
....But Melbourneโ€™s strong stance has not dampened the appetite of Oliver, who remains in contact with the Cats.

A pay cut may help the Demons reconsider a trade, but two club sources remained staunch when contacted by this masthead on Thursday. They said a deal to move Oliver to the Cats would not be entertained.

Oliver is contracted until the end of 2030 at an average of $1.3 million per season.

While all three parties โ€“ Melbourne, Geelong and Oliverโ€™s management โ€“ have privately confirmed that the Catsโ€™ future first-round pick in next yearโ€™s national draft had been initially raised, they say there is yet to be a meaningful trade offer beyond that.

Whats telling is in the comments section of the Facebook post of the article, one comment in particular from Michelle Oliver, Clarryโ€™s mum.ย

Well itโ€™d be telling if she said anything relevant about whether he wants to stay or not.ย

I hope the club makes a complaint to the AFL and threatens to sue the Age for this rubbish , enough is enough.

No serious, why would we sue then?

I know thereโ€™s no law for publishing lies but there should be.

Of course we have no grounds, but it sucks that they they can say whatever untruths they like with zero consequences Dazzle.

โ€˜Oliver clings to hope he might still be tradedโ€™

Is there even one person on this site that think he is desperately trying to leave?

Any chance these [censored] can be held accountable??

Itโ€™s a joke, itโ€™s not a real quote. Iโ€™ll change the quotation marks. But it is a real summary of Geelongโ€™s actions in this saga.

Iโ€™ll say it again. At this stage a trade is more likely than not.ย

The supporters on this forum have their heads in the sand.ย

Oliver doesnโ€™t want to play for Melbourne and is trying to find any chance to leave. Even take a pay cut.ย

Thanks Sam Mc

Love how you state things as fact when you have no idea like the rest of us

And to repeat my take on it fwiw, I reckon Geelong let Oliver's visit become public knowledge in order to embarrass Melbourne. Consequently MFC could have been seen as having to rid itself of a "cultural issue" whatever the price, the emphasis being "whatever the price" because they knew they had nothing to match his true value.

Sneaky as, and all the heat comes back on Melbourne as a basket case while Geelong are seen as squeaky clean.

I think I might just go watch the 2021 prelim now as my compensation.

That is always fun!

Ah yeah, nothing like a good old straw man to really prove a point.ย

Well done, a resounding showing of critical thinking.ย

What I simply don't understand is why Geelong? Up there with the least likely to be able to facilitate a fair trade.

If we really want him gone shouldn't we be dealing with a club that could actually make it happen.

Bizarre really.

Because Mackie is happy to waste everyoneโ€™s time, thinks heโ€™s smarter than everyone else & thinks he can secure himself a bargain. The new Dodoro.

Incorrect sir, ย no straw man here, my comments have complete relevance to the argument.

Oliver's own mother refuted the claims .

This a forum discussion not a published article.

Well done to you for clever derogatory tone as well, very intelligent indeed.

I think it's passed that point honestly.ย ย

The Age have defaced the Melbourne Demons brand by running this disgusting smear campaign re: Oliver. Hopefully our legal team sends them an invoice for cost of all this slander. It's disgraceful.ย

This club couldn't control the narrative in a chook raffle right now..ย

What are you genuinely talking about?ย

Youโ€™ve gone from stating that the โ€˜clubโ€™ should bring a legal claim against The Age, for โ€˜liesโ€™, proceeding to ask for a โ€˜quoteโ€™, and now your stating that โ€˜this is a forum discussion not a published articleโ€™, yet your first point is directed at an article published by The Age.ย

Whoโ€™s the straw man now?

You are the archetypal Holier than though poster and not worth another thought.

If thereโ€™s any truth to the rumour that heโ€™s open to a pay cut if it facilitates a trade, that can only mean one of two things:

1. His manager has to have a long talk to him about why thatโ€™s insane. He deserves, and needs, every dollar weโ€™ve promised him. He is not someone who should be reckless with his earnings right now.ย

2. Geelong is offering to make him a Cotton On ambassador or some other dodgy [censored].ย

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.
