Steven May staging fine

I think there is a big difference between Roffey and/or Pert having a quiet word with the powers that be over this (and other similar issues), which I assume they well could have done, with making a loud public criticism of the AFL/tribunal system/ umpires, which while soothing the fans, may [censored] off the AFL/tribunal/umpires.

Our club is, and should be focused on what we can control in terms of playing better footy and, ideally, winning flags. Club leaders whining and putting focus on what we can't control is poor culture as if players start also doing this, then they are likely to losing concentration when decisions go against them (which they inevitably will), which is to the deteriment of what our leaders should be encouraging...

Just my thoughts.

Agree in principle

quite relevant.

IF the 'slight push',  like the jabs in the guts,  didn't happen there would be no free.

I really hope that one of their annual rule changes this off season, in fact their only one,  is to make it very clear that every punch to the guts, to or from whomever,  is an offence that starts at one week for a first offence.  Yes, for every player and every team.

I guess nothing will happen until a Collingwood or Carlton player gets his spleen ruptured - yes, it can and does happen sometimes from an unexpected and undefended gut punch.

It is cowardly and designed to gain an unfair advantage even if for only a moment.  The "Legendary" Brett Harvey specialised in it, then squealed when he received retaliation, sometimes leading to a report and suspension.  Clarry is the receiver more often than most as it puts him at least momentarily out of the contest.   Bernie Vince once went down and actually vomited and had to leave the field (can't remember the offender off hand but I am sure someone here will remember).

Yet these inane commentators call it "a love tap".  What a pack of Neanderthals.

They are consistent with us!  It feels like it is becoming a bit "them and us" situation.

Now bring up the fact; that because of Maynard’s staging, the MRO has sanctioned a player and that player fooled the umpire into awarding a free kick.

Interesting to note that the AFL media shut down the staging story completely and not one of the weekend or Monday shows mentioned it.

One guy, for a lesser stage of just putting his hand to his head, gets humiliated, vilified and called a cheat over and over again on every media outlet and the other guy, once again, just walks away and gets on with his life.

But, hey, we're not corrupt: we just like to protect Maynard no matter what he does.

IMO Pendlebury’s on Neale was worth a week, Neale was looking at the ball up and wasn’t expecting contact when St Pendles whacked him in the guts - cheap shot, 1 week.

Maynard goes to Long and punches him in the arm, Long open hands him in the chest - don’t think that’s a week with or without the acting. They’re both front on and Maynard should’ve expected to get one back as he gave one first.

When will we know about the Suns' Appeal against the ridiculous Fine handed out to a player who pushed Maynard - poor, poor Maynard, why, it hurted him so much he fell holding his tum tum and his head, obviously total bodily disorientation. Scre Blue, he desperately needs to be protected from such major assaults and given Academy Awards, or maybe he should be in Neighbours. Is that still on any more? If not, maybe get a gig on Rin Tin Tin...

I read the appeal was unsuccessful and Gold Coast have started a GoFundMe page to help Long pay off the $3,750 fine.

If that's true, I refuse to follow AFL any more: it is a stage occupied by puppet actors who simply follow orders from above, and I ain't talking about heaven.

Also, WHY is the Press silent about this total distortion of Justice?????

The GoFundMe was a joke by the Suns social media team. The fine was a joke by the AFL/tribunal.

Well clearly the AFL, as they have an ex Pies player as the MRO, who refuses to penalise Pies players.

For Maynard to escape a staging fine after May the week before is simply disgraceful.

He acted far more than May, yet escapes any sanction.

He is hit with an open hand to the left shoulder and goes down like he was shot and then grabs his head and keeps holding it as he lays on the ground.

He staged for a free and yet it is ignored by the MRO.

The media go quiet on it because they are the AFL lackies.

The AFL is just a joke these days, that isn’t even funny.

Redleg I reckon it's relevant that Maynard played for a free kick during off the ball push and shove while May was tackled fairly and played for a free kick.  I've got no problem with the May staging fine, noting that the umpire should have called for a ball up as soon as it became clear May's arms were pinned, and reckon it would open up a can of worms if the AFL started to issue fines for staging during off the ball pushing and shoving.

Surely Long wasn't fined for that 😮

I liken the AFL trying to sanction a player for staging during an off the ball scrap to a parent punishing only one of their kids when they are both niggling each other.

Reminds me of the time my brother and I and our neighbor were kicking footy on the fringes of  Selwyn Park one winter's evening. It was Thursday, payday in those days. My father and my mother did the weekly shopping, caught the train back to Albion,  and slowly trudged home from the station, laden with groceries. Just before they reached Selwyn Street, I had pushed my younger brother into the ground, picked up the footy, kicked it back to our neighbor. In the meantime, my brother picked up a yonnie, as we called a rock in those days, and threw it at me. It hit my head, blood gushed and by the time my parents entered our yard, my brother and I were returning home to find a bandage. My father asked what had happened. I told him, and while my mother washed my skull and stopped the bleeding, I heard my father go to the back of the house to find the cane mattress beater. I returned to the kitchen just as my father was about to administer a full-bloodied whack on my brother's backside - he had been ordered to lie face down across a chair. My brother yelped. My father repeated the dose and as he raised his arm to deliver the final blow, I blurted out, Dad, please don't - I started it, it was my fault. My father looked at me and said, Don't worry, you're next.

Monbon, thanks for sharing. This approach might work as a penalty for players scrapping off the ball but not sure it would get past the AFLPA, not unless the AFL does something radical such as increasing the % of gambling revenue that goes into the next TPP agreement.

    MORE FIERCE by Meggs

We’re back!  Winning the last three matches has recaptured our Demon spirit and, with superstar players returning from rehab, our Season 2024 dreams are not over yet.   So come along 5.05 pm Saturday afternoon to watch this Round 9 ladder-defining match at the Field of Dreams. Expect the Tigers to be fierce, but surely the Demons will be more fierce. Playing conditions are expected to be a dry 15 degrees with a typically gusty Cranbourne wind. The media opprobrium of the ill-consi

    IN FRONT by Meggs

In this must-win clash between Melbourne 11th on the ladder and St Kilda 8th, it was the Demons who were in front all day to win in a hard-fought Round 8 clash to make it three in a row to keep theit slim finals chances alive. A good crowd of enthusiastic footy families for week 2 of Pride Round had gathered.  The full pews in the well-appointed RSEA Park grandstand provided excellent viewing.   The Saints won the toss and elected to kick to the southern end favoured by a strong 2-3 g

    THE TRADING CHRONICLES 02

Part 2: Watching grass grow by Whispering Jack Critics of test cricket (and I’m not one of them) will often claim the sport is excruciatingly boring: that following a five day match is much like watching grass grow. However, the longest form of that game has nothing on the first week of the AFL trade period when it comes to inducing sleep among those in the football public who follows this process in its somnolent moments. The week gone by has been no exception. Only two player trades

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Meggs

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised
