NON-MFC: Opening Round

Featured Replies

Sooo “Opening round” is essentially “Roger rugby round”..?

Are we that insecure/desperate at AFL HQ?

I heard the interview with the new AFL CEO this morning.
it was so boring and predictable.
The AFL Fixture will be exploited as much as possible to squeeze every cent out of the game

This Round Zero is quite pathetic really.
All Clubs should play the first round

Tough first round for the blues having to play the lions at the gabba at night without weitering and Walsh.

Gws v pies will be good.

( Only from an injury perspective).

This is the tip I am having trouble with.

GWS V PIES should be moved to melbourne just to have them play in 40oC

Based on preseason form and injury profile of both teams I predict lions will pump Carlton. Could be 50 points.

Hoping gws beat the pies.

don’t care about suns and tiges.

Lions, tigers and GWS.

I’ve picked us plus all the other home teams. GWS robbed in that prelim, can’t happen twice in a row and without (I’m guesssing) the same levels of crowd noise influencing the umpiring.

Honestly don't think I'll be watching the other games. Just not ready for footy yet, not with the sun we got coming up anyway.

But Lions, Suns, Pies

Most closely I'll be watching to see if the Blues suffer the same sort of fade out as our blokes tonight. The Gabba this time of year could be ugly.

My friend who I work with who barracks for Collingwood, says to me last week we are the reigning premiers how come we have to play interstate r1.

I turned around and said to her the afl are trying to get into nrl territory & I don't think you should be complaining about having to travel interstate

Interested to see how the blues play if it’s slippery conditions. Will at least feel a bit better if they can’t handle it either.

Will be watching how both teams enter F50 with great interest.

Expect Carlton to wilt late. Northern home games until late April are gift wins. Season should start later.

A Blues belting will help to cheer me up. 50+ points would be nice.

Let's hope so.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
