Preseason game? Tick

Head injury? Tick

4 weeks minimum.

The Powell-Pepper case provides the perfect chance for the AFL to set the standard for the season. Reckless or deliberate conduct resulting in concussion or a serious head wound should incur a six-week minimum ban.

But the AFL, even with a gigantic class-action claim looming against it, effectively condones thuggery, with culprits  defended successfully by high-priced, nit-picking lawyers while concussion victims usually have to miss two games or more.

The latest clear example: Brayden Maynard escaped unscathed after the reckless charge that has ended the career of Angus Brayshaw.

Advances in medical science have made it clear that repeated concussion injuries are likely to result in deadly long-term  consequences. If the AFL does not clean up its act in this regard, what mother would want her son or daughter playing Aussie rules?

Feel like we say this every year in the first month of footy and are constantly let down.

I saw the AFL website ran the headline 'facing massive ban'... and then in the article it suggested 3 weeks.

At some point all this spin is going to cause its own concussion problems.

Is Christian still in charge?

Because he was the one who came out to say Maynard doesn't have a case to answer. All ticked off. All clear.

Surely the first thing you do as an organisation is sack THAT bloke.

If Maynard gets off PP has nothing to worry about

According to the AFL's defence against the class action it must be Mark Keane's fault for playing & the Crows for putting him out on the ground.

SPP has no case to answer...

Based on the Maynard precedent he walks away without a slap on the wrist.

That's it and that's all.

They have made their bed.

After the pre season from hell (which quite frankly started on 7 September) our first minor of minor wins is at stake today.

We play Port and SPP in round 3.

Well Port are pushing for 3 weeks, so unless the tribunal lose their minds and let him off entirely this seems to be a definite.

SPP will miss the Dees game unless he appeals.

Or they count Friday’s community game as 1 match.

I don't believe the Practice Games are counted in the matches he misses. He will miss the first 4 Port Adelaide games of the 2024 Season.

I like your belief.

4 weeks is a pretty hefty outcome for SPP and Port and he is such an important player for them. I thought he might end up with 3 weeks given the player was slung into his path and the time he had to bump, brace or tackle.  Overall btw 3 - 4 weeks seems reasonable and if he was a Melbourne player most if us would think 4 is a bit harsh.

recidivist and did it in a bad week in which to elect to bump not tackle

the worst one I've ever seen is neal-bullen's suspension for a sling tackle - where he let go of the crom dude and his head clunked the ground due to the whipping motion; there was no sling

from memory, anb got three in a 17 game season; we appealed and it got EXTENDED to 4

disgraceful

almost as bad as when trengove copped 3 for dangerfield being a wuss, going down like he'd been broken in half, and being perfectly fine the next week when he dominated and booted 6

Didn't Brad Miller (or was it Brent Moloney?) get done for almost bumping someone. Something about he just missed but the action was suspended. That one has always been high on my ridiculous meter.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
